It's kind of a hidden fact in the movies but he did spare alot of expenses. No back up generator, no flood ditches, he did not hire the best staff, the vet on staff does not know the Triceratops is poisoned, the plant experts planted poison plants, nothing on the island is hurricane proof yet they are in a tropical area, etc etc. In the book it was much more obvious and clearly Hammond was a piece of shit on the surface.

Honestly I get frustrated when people (mostly my extended family admittedly) take from that movie the idea that the message is "dinosaurs are impossible to contain safely and we should never try to somehow recreate one". Like, no, we can make zoos for large, fairly intelligent predators or even bigger herbivores just fine, we do it all the time with things like lions and elephants, dinosaurs arent godzilla or anything. The issue with Jurassic park was that it was run by cheapskates that wanted to get something done fast on a budget without concern for doing it right. It would be like making a movie about the Oceangate disaster and having people conclude the moral of the story was "You shouldnt want to build a submarine because humans arent meant to go down there and it will inevitably go badly" rather than "You should spend the money to build your submarine the right way"

There's actually an art book out there about exactly this concept, a zoo built for prehistoric animals that's actually designed and maintained properly and it's basically just a concept art book about a mildly futuristic looking zoo featuring dinosaurs as the enclosure occupants.

Edit: found it, https://youtu.be/7iTP-afrjeY?

SI is Google's tracking code. It's anti privacy. And big data issues affect us all, so protecting your own data protects everyone else.

Didn't know that was a thing

The hubris of trying to control nature and failing for it is a powerful common theme and it's disingenous to say it's not central to Jurassic Park.

It is not a movie about inefficient management and the disrespect of safety guidelines.

[-] marcos@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

The book is absolutely about bad management and disrespect for safety guidelines.

The movie is about scare jumps.

Everyone has different skills. Some are good at thinking, and spend enormous amounts of time at improving that skill. Others... don't. Which would be fine, if they weren't the ones in charge - e.g. claiming to be Pro-Life while killing people.

If you are interested and haven't done this deep dive yet, Innuendo Studios' The Alt-Right Playbook goes into imho the perfect amount of depth to explain so much about how people fall for such logical traps. And Ian Danskin is a fucking international treasure - his other series on e.g. Protagony I cannot recommend highly ~~though~~ (edit: WHAT, I meant to say ENOUGH - I cannot recommend it highly ENOUGH! It is a freaking AWESOME video!!!).

Anyway, my unasked-for thought is that I would guess that you feel frustrated bc you have unrealistically high "expectations" of them. Lower them - they simply are not capable of doing what you can do, and while yes a good deal of that is choice/nurture, a lot of it is innate/nature as well.

Ofc, do what you want and more importantly feel how you wish, but I hope this suggestion helps!:-)

It feels like you really shoehorned that excuse for an Alt-Right Playbook reference into a thread it really has no business being in, but imma upvote it anyway because it's just that important.

[-] Soup@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

It’s weird how much it fits. I’m glad they did shoe-horn it in because my very first thought was about how conservatives keep yammering on and on about how x, y, or z doesn’t work while doing everything in their power to make sure that it’s as broken and half-assed as possible. All they do is moan about things they broke not working and the only solutions they ever come up with are the ones that don’t require them to think.

It’s easy to throw something broken in the garbage and it takes curiosity and skill to diagnose and fix the thing. Why learn, understand, and better your life when you can throw a tantrum instead?

even in the movie it's not like dinosaurs swam off the island and populated the rest of the earth thus bringing about an apocalypse, the issue blatantly isn't one of containment, it's one of humans hopping into the "giant hangry murder chicken" enclosure with a can of pepper spray and being surprised when the giant hangry murder chickens just swallow them whole and consider the pepper spray to add some nice flavour to their meal.

The worst thing that could have happened if people just stayed the fuck off the island is that the dinosaurs died off and the project failed.
