Their lives are threatened. The instant that the line goes down they know they're all fucked. They also know that we're all just about at the top of the hill and they can see the other side so they're all digging up.

Well yah there's that, no I more-so mean they will actually kill them for 'causing' the collapse. Bowing, epstine, and a few other "suspicious circumstances" over the years, I'm would not be suprised in the least if it were true.
