People on lemmy are the same fuckwad assholes you meet on reddit. It's not like being a better person is enforced on the lemmyverse outside of a couple of instances like hexbear and lemmygrad. idk maybe it's me but it's like why bother, why not just use reddit if you're going to be a shitty person or overall debate pervert? Weird shit.

Yeah, I agree, but most people on places like lemmy.world didn't come to Lemmy because of ideological reasons but for petty reasons like the Reddit API thing.

To be fair a lot of people, me included, came for the API thing and stayed for ideological reasons

Also, there’s a difference between “left just because of the API thing” and “The API thing was the last straw.”

I'm gonna be real with you I was the shittest lib before I came here. I left solely because of the API, increased ads, and the addition of micro transactions for profile customization. They ruined my treats and that was too far for me then. Anyway if it wasn't for that and posters like yogthuos I'd still be a shitlib

I came for the API thing. I also patched the app I used for reddit so the API thing wouldn't even affect me. It still works as o today!

I don't really use reddit anymore, for ideological reasons. It's such a terrible place.

I really don't think reddit nuking a tons of very useful tools and 3rd party frontends is that petty of a reason. It's not the most morally grand reason but it's not that petty. I mean making the expxeirnece of using a product far worse especially if you are a moderator or use third party mobile frontends is definitely a reasonable reason to not want to use reddit anymore.

At least it was the main reason for me to move away from reddit for good. Back then I was already in hexbear some of the time, and I was unhappy with reddit and how terrible it was. However, a lot of small communities I frequented were still there and the inertia was too great. When the API happened it killed the app I used to browse reddit, and the official reddit app sucked ass, so I just moved to hexbear full time and I open reddit like once a month on my laptop.

After almost a decade of checking reddit all the time, the API shit made me quit reddit cold turkey. So it was impactful at least for some people.
