Chuck Schumer will go down in history as one of the most vehemently hated political figures from this time period in US politics and for good reason.
Democrats of this period will go down in history as the functional mechanism by which the fascists were able to take over.
I fucking hate that our options for political parties are inept or evil
Schumer and Jefferies didn't slow-walk votes on war powers resolutions for two weeks before this new war because they thought it would fail; they slow-walked it because they didn't want to have to put Democrats on record as having voted against it. They didn't want to have Democrats being held accountable for the manner in which they govern and the consequences which extend from that governance.
The Democrats only appear inept if you misidentify their objectives. When you recognize that most of the party and definately party leadership, by and large, have the same goals as the fascist party, it becomes more difficult to interpret their alleged incompetence as being anything other than performative. They achieve the goals of their funders. If you are Israel, you are getting what you paid for.
This is why I'm giving up on changing the DNC and refocusing my efforts on changing the voting system from First Past The Post to Rank Choice.
But we also need the fascists out of power, and kept out of power.
These two things have to be achieved in parallel. That's why I vote Democrat, but only until I have Rank Choice at which point the Democrats will become my second pick (and then eventually third pick, and hopefully someday not one of my picks at all)
Now that would be a beautiful thing. Third party voters such as myself wouldn't get so much hate if ranked choice is an option.
I think this is why we'll never see ranked choice voting. Both the Democrats and Republicans know that it weakens their power. We've already seen multiple states enact laws that specifically ban ranked choice voting for their states.
Yup, they're already trying to outlaw it in many states
But we have learned the hard way that Democrats don't keep fascists out of power.
Yeah well, it's not their job to keep fascists out if power. It's OUR job. Us, the voters.
Voting works. If it didn't, they wouldn't be trying so hard to stop us from doing it. And once we have Rank Choice we'll be able to move beyond the "an actual fascist/not an actual fascist" dichotomy. But until then, for fucks sake, vote "not an actual fascist" even if you don't like the person you're voting for. I don't care how terrible they are, if they're not an actual fascist then you vote for them. THAT'S how you keep fascists out of power.
I did my job by voting for candidates that wanted to stop fascists, then.
excuse me. inept or inept and evil. competent was never a choice
The Chamberlain Democrats. Chambercrats.
Viche Democrats
Only because Mitch McConnell is almost dead.
Well I think Schumer may be more UNIVERSALLY hated, because he sucks for both sides. If you think tax cuts for the rich are great, that Isreal should be able to do whatever the hell it wants, that wars are a good thing, you'll love McConnel, Schumer on the other hand sometimes says words to pretend to oppose those things.
So in short, if you are pro-fascist you hate schumer a little, if you are anti-fascist you hate schumer a lot... but at the end of the day, no one likes him, except for maybe the people that support his role as the person hired to lose.
I know a family who likes him. They are called the Baileys.
He will be largely forgotten by the history books, a minor side character that 99.99% of people will never learn about.
We’re talking about Schumer not Trump.
No, unfortunately for him and his family, I do not think he will be forgotten at all. People will remember who was in power who could have stopped this, they will burn it into their memories like a brand so they never forget. I know I already have.
And those people will die in a few more decades, and he will be forgotten. Regulated to the most obscure history books
Even kids today know jack shit about 9/11, nor do they care. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who could name the minority leadership under Bush Jr and who supported the AUMF or Patriot Act.
History will forget Schumer, Trump will take up most of all anyone ever learns of this era.
Exactly. I lived through the Iran/Contra affair, and I don't remember most of the players in a scandal that was way worse than Watergate.
I disagree, no generation will be able to do more damage to the earth than the Boomer generation, this period of time will be remembered and talked about in stories, history and parables for hundreds if not thousands of years. The damage is that acute that is being locked in right now, so no, I think people will be VERY interested in the villains, especially the "quiet" ones from this period, in the same way people are interested in the ways in which the Roman Empire could have avoided collapse to some degree but did not.
Trump is in many ways a boring character, he is easy to diagnose, he telegraphs his intentions with everything he does and projects every internal insecurity he has on to his enemies. There is nothing to discover, nothing creative to Trump's bigotry and fascism. There are no cliffhangers to the story of Trump, no interesting twists or turns, it is all just a base reduction, a cynical exclusion of all else but a worship of might makes right and narcissism.
People will be far more interested in the ways in which the DNC and Democratic Leadership made the catastrophe of fascism inevitable in their failures to meet the reality of the moment or pass even marginal reforms to improve the quality of life of people in the US.
There is little to learn peering into a figure like Trump, but Biden, Schumer, Jeffries.... Nancy Pelosi... those characters are much more historically relevant because they occupied positions that could have ostensibly headed off the descent to fascism in a way that would have been massively popular with the general public, the question of why they didn't is far more fruitful for historians than why did Trump start another dumb as fuck war.
I am looking forward to an episode of HardThrasher, 30 years from now. The Internet Historian, too. This era of politics will be evergreen for video historians, simply because there is so much bullshit to unpack.
I highly doubt that. It seems younger generations have learned neither the lessons of vaccination nor the lessons of fascism from WWII.
If that Fourth Turning thing turns out to be right - and Zeus help us if it does, the boomer generation will be viewed as a Renaissance era (and a lot of what they worked for was - all kinds of awakening happened thanks to them, regardless of the current en vogue narratives).
Ahahahahaha
The damage is already locked in, to do a greater amount is impossible, for in the wake of the damage Boomers have witnessed in their lives there will be far less left to destroy.
Shrug, you can laugh I guess? Even if it's quite en vogue at the moment to lay all the problems at the feet of one generation, I think it's incredibly simplistic and naive to do so. Especially when we can see an incredible rise in younger men embracing the tenets of fascism right now, and they are nowhere near the age of boomers.
This is the boomers we are talking about, and they contain multitudes. They fought for gay rights, they fought for civil rights, they fought for women's rights. Prior to the boomers, women could not even have a bank account without a man in their life signing off on it.
with respect, who was in power that could have stopped hitler?
Who could have stopped Hitler?
All of Von Hindenbergs supporters, who were pulling every dirty trick they could think of against the leftist candidate. Sound familiar?
Hindenbergs son ran his campaign and gave all his speeches as hindenberg was too old and feeble to do it himself. Hindenberg didnt even last two years into his term before dying, which paved the way for hitler to merge the presidency and chancellory.
Hindenberg appointed Hitler chancellor-- supposedly the geriatric idiot Von Hindenberg didnt even recognize Hitler when he appointed him and mistook him for the old Kaiser. All those people who supported hindenberg screwed the entire world. Exactly the same as all the Dem centrist idiots supporting Biden when he was drooling on himself did, while they said Biden was as sharp as ever. And the centrist dem idiots still havent learned their lesson. Biden is a shockingly close parallel to Hindenberg. And the centrists are idiot Von Hindenbergs idiot supporters. And we are all watching the world burn again, as if history is replaying itself almost exactly, with hitler played by trump.
Not the pedo, murdering dude that wants to be king? I doubt most people even know who he is when you mention his name.
