And don’t forget to shut the fuck up.
Love this lecture. It should be required viewing in high schools.
I generally avoid even watching a 30 second video link, but I'm not even an American and ended up watching all 45 minutes of this. That was a great talk - thanks for sharing it.
You forgot,
- Be white
And don't look poor.
This is technically not a requirement, but by golly it sure does help.

It’s like a warning about wild animals at a campsite.
Never approach the wildlife or make it feel threatened. Do not make sudden movements. Doing so may provoke an attack. Never feed the police. It cannot tell the difference between fingers and french fries.
Or a fucking hairbrush and a gun
Or himilayan pink salt and drugs
Or an acorn and a gunshot
Or kitty litter an meth. Or a wallet and a gun (Diallo…and probably countless others)
Or school shooters and parents
Kitty litter/meth, now I gotta see this one
Aww fuck, looks like Silica litter. While was imagining the story to be about traditional cat litter, this is still pretty funny, and dumb on the cops' part.
It’s like a warning about wild animals at a campsite.
Sad that we all just accept that, like a wild animal, the folks whose job it is to protect us may instead harm or kill us at unexpected moments, and so we just try to avoid them while not doing anything about that behavior on their part.
When the police knock on your door DO NOT open the door. Speak through the door. If they have a warrant, they can already enter. If they don't have a warrant, they may use you stepping outside to detain you anyways, and it also gives them an opportunity to see into your house.
I had a cop ding dong ditch and hide in my bushes, to then run up to me yelling stop once I stepped out of my house to ask me questions.
I still feel gross. I wouldn’t have answered the door, but they tricked me.
This is genuinely absurd. But the mental image of a uniformed cop, giddily pressing your doorbell and running away like Ron Swanson to jump and hide in a bush is too fuckin good. And then the image of them jumping back out to say “STOP RIGHT THERE!” Is also good. Goddamn, that’s funny. Fucked up and dystopian. But funny to imagine.
Fyi: This only applies to the USA
Where I live Police don't need to give you a paper with proof of a warrant, they still need a warrant but they don't have to prove it to you.
A lot of people here think they do though.
AKA How to get shot by American police.
Be: not a cop. 🤷🏽♂️
Or move to a country that has a police force where officers are properly trained and monitored.
Oh yeah sure let me just get all my paperwork to do so magically approved, and scrounge together a few years' worth of savings in order to move and afford to live while looking for a new job, and leave behind all my friends and family that I can't bring with me.
Ezpz
Oh cool, didn't know that's an option, can you list a few?
I.e. not Germany either
Bodycams are
- not independently monitored
- not always on
- only on when they want it
einsdreieinszwei
Good luck with finding that one
And reminder, don't call a cop unless you want someone to die.
Remember you are someone, even when you called the cops.
FYI: "I want to speak to a lawyer" is not an unequivocal invocation of your rights. Be specific. "I am invoking my right to have a lawyer present" or something to that effect.
Need to have the right magical incantation
This didn't used to be the case until the Thompkins ruling amended the Miranda ruling in 2010.

Its unfortunate how difficult it is to stay aware of basic rights for lay persons with decisions like this throwing out old assumptions.
Step 4: get shot
If you are in BC Canada, https://bccla.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/English_Arrest-Pocketbook.pdf
... I am!
Also, if you are ever pulled over and you are asked to get out of your car, you need to close the door behind you.
Why
If the doors are open its the same thing as cops seeing your front door open. They can and will use it as an excuse to go through your car.
There is a thing with liability when the insurance is concerned, in the case where you leave your keys ignition and/or leave your car doors unlocked with thieves about.
How does this apply for the aforementioned case of being pulled over by police?
I was just making a play with thieves and cops being alike in what they may do around your car. One would steal it, one would impound it, with some coke offering added.
FYI - don't try the search shit in the UK.
Stop and searches are not voluntary, and officers don’t need your permission to go through your belongings. You can’t refuse a stop and search by UK law. If you do, they can use force.
