hahaha not going to bother with this movie anyway, but the idea of anyone caring enough to be mad about a phase 5 (or is it 6 idk) movie is funny

okay just doing the same movie but removing all references to the existence of Israel is even funnier like just don't release the movie it can't possibly be worth it at this point.

e: i hadn't been paying attention to marvel news and thought the new movie was gonna be about her and not captain america again even tho i thought at the end of the last one he transforms into Liberal Clint Eastwood

[-] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago

It was never going to be. Falcon is a boring ass character, his actor is straight up Not Good, the villains of the disney+ series were more interesting than him and all the other "good guys", etc, etc etc

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

his actor is straight up Not Good

I don't know how Mackie got here, but whoever got him there did him dirty. He doesn't seem to have the chops to be a TV lead role (see Altered Carbon), let alone the lead for something that's supposed to be a blockbuster movie. Maybe they thought he'd grow into the role by the time Evans rolled off idk

Edit: I hope he gets a big enough check for this shit, though. I can't imagine the amount of pronouns he might have to put up with being a black superhero character (particularly one that replaced a white man)

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 21 points 3 months ago

I don't really have a problem with Mackie as an actor but they built up his captain america while vilifying refugees and very much making him out like a house slave. Like he was literally accused of it, and then they did nothing to address it.

[-] Babs@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago

The actor is fine. Black Captain America who is also the Falcon? That also has potential to be neat. Lot of interesting dynamics to explore there.

Then the show came out, they barely touched the race issue and instead made him Captain Liberalism, complete with an incredibly cringey speech at the end.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier is probably the worst case of "Villain has a point, better make them burn down an orphanage or something" since Black Panther overthrew the anti-imperialist lawful monarch of Wakanda with the help of the CIA.

Oh god, I forgot about that season. If you get out-acted by Army Guy from Suicide Squad, you should probably just find a new career.

I don't agree with either of these things but I wish your happiness.

I do agree that the villians in his series were more interesting though. Well, at least John Walker was.

For those who are pro-Israel, the recently revealed choice to seemingly alter Bat-Seraph’s backstory as a Mossad agent felt like an attempt to erase her Israeli heritage

Much like captain America, she was born in Brooklyn.

Saw the deadpool movie in theater recently and they had a trailer for the new captain america movie. Not even a hint of the captain zionism.#

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 28 points 3 months ago

Was the new deadpool any good? My partner will probably want to see it lol

I'm not surprised that they're obscuring Captain hamas-red-triangle in the promo materials. I think they already changed the title due to some other controversy, and I would not be shocked if it ends up getting reshoots to further obscure her before the movie actually releases.

I saw it too, got dragged there by a friend. I've been deep into X-Men since I was a kid, so maybe your experience will be different. There were clearly some writers involved who know X-Men lore and know what makes the fans squeal like piggies.

As a movie it's just very very silly. Like it's silly to the point I never felt much tension in the plot. Nothing seemed to matter and everything felt like a set-up to the next joke or reference. It's fun though and some of the fight scenes are cool, as far as marvel CGI fights go.

I've always had a personal dislike of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, not because of his acting or anything, but because Wolverine in the comics is 5'3" and Jackman is 6'2". Wolverine is usually the shortest character in any given scene and I always thought that was kinda cool. It shouldn't matter but it always bugged me. The movie actually acknowledges the height difference in a kinda funny way, so I'll give it points for that.

So you're saying they should have given him the Frodo Baggins treatment? Lol

That bit got a genuine laugh from me.

I thought it was good if you watch through the lense of it just being a super hero parody movie.

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 15 points 3 months ago

I'm not expecting much - a goofy romp with Reynolds and Jackman that produces a few sensible chuckles is enough lol. Sounds like it at least clears that bar

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago

Yeah, it's silly. You'll dig it.

[-] dead@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

I'm a long time super hero movie hater. I went to the theater to watch the new Dead Pool movie with a friend. The premise of the new Dead Pool movie is similar to Ready Player One. Dead Pool gets kidnapped by Time Police and sent into a place called like "The Void", stylized like the Mad Max universe. Inside the void are all the characters of previous unsuccessful Super Hero franchises: Elektra, Fantastic Four, Blade, numerous Xmen movies, etc. The whole movie is just Dead Pool trying to escape The Void and discovering other shitty super heros in The Void. The similarity that I see with Ready Player One is the reliance on references to previous pop culture as the primary form of content. The movies lose the shape of an original work and become a regurgitation of pop culture references.

[-] Facky@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

Would it still be a good movie if it's the only marvel movie I've seen or should I watch others (or at least a recap)?

[-] Babs@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

A lot of the humor is based on:

  • recent Marvel movies sure suck, eh?
  • here are some references to real old superhero movies - remember that time so-and-so got cast as so-and-so? Hilarious!

I enjoyed it, but it would help to have seen the other Deadpool movies (which are fun movies, I like them all) or at least know a little bit about comics/comic movies. Also X-men. This is a X-men movie.

[-] zed_proclaimer@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

Marvel getting even more meta and self-aware and unserious. Just what we all needed, even more twee self-deprecation. How original

Lol well I guess Endgame or showdown or whatever doesnt mean anything now that the world is back to normal and the emotional climax is reversed

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago

Also, probably partially because of Covid, but they really fucked up the pacing of everything I feel. I think I've slop watched most of the current phase but am not all that invested in any cliffhangers or story progress.

[-] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago

I think it's just a natural consequence of story structure. They literally had a movie named "endgame" where they blew their story wad and it's just limping along now

[-] Babs@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

They tried to introduce a new Big Bad to shape their story arcs around, but then irl stuff happened.

The new Deadpool gave them an excuse to just recast whoever as whoever though. Disney has those actors for life now.

[-] autismdragon@hexbear.net 11 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

the emotional climax is reversed

Maybe its because I'm a longtime comics fan but I dont get how this is true at all. Its not like theyre even explicitly bringing back Tony Stark. Its just the actor playing a different character (who MAY end up being an alternate universe version of Tony Stark MAYBE, but if they do that thats still not the same character. In thej same way that Reed Richards and The Maker (this is a comics thing) arent the same character).

[-] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

Oh my bad. I didnt know he was playing someone else. I thought he was being revived lol. I didnt bother reading the article

[-] autismdragon@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

Lmao honestly cant really blame you.

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 24 points 3 months ago

What does seem evident is that Marvel wants “to have mass appeal,” says Shama Rangwala, a York University assistant professor of humanities, “but will likely end up pleasing no one” due to the concerns expressed by a range of viewers.

"Seems evident" my ass, they adapt comic characters completely differently in the movies all the time. No matter what the background is.

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago

shocked-pikachu you mean Disney (or any capitalist film production company) wants to make as much money as possible without regard to the actual film?

they adapt comic characters completely differently in the movies all the time

To be fair, this has happened as long as people have been adapting stories to film (especially with books). Sometimes you have to cut, composite, or add characters to make the story work in a different medium or tell the version of the story you want to tell
