I didn't realize it was April 1st already.

"Alarmo" sounds like an elf name from Disenchantment.

[-] Templa@beehaw.org 14 points 1 month ago

The first thing I thought was "Did I suddently wake up on April 1st??".

[-] thingsiplay@beehaw.org 3 points 1 month ago

Is this an out of season alarm fools joke?

Nintendo switch online required

They finally stopped pretending they weren't about programmed obsolescence

[-] Aatube@kbin.melroy.org 3 points 1 month ago

i think that's just for the soft launch

For a limited time*, paid Nintendo Switch Online members in the United States and Canada can purchase Alarmo online via the My Nintendo Store before it is available to purchase by the general public.

When I saw this post I assumed it was a parody

Really? A $100 alarm clock with WiFi that requires a Nintendo account subscription? It's going to be sold out tomorrow.

[-] thingsiplay@beehaw.org 27 points 1 month ago

The main gimmick is that it has tracking features builtin and will stop alarming when you go out of bed, without interaction. I tracks you in bed. To me this sounds alarming, because it collects data, so you can analyze your sleep, and has connection to the internet. Absolutely nogo.

I can just hit the button manually on my phone and its done. And I can already use any song I want.

[-] Krauerking@lemy.lol 3 points 1 month ago

Nintendo also recently did the Pokenon sleep app which was about tracking your sleep and a bunch of wearables have been shouting they intend to get better about it too....

I don't know if I want to know why suddenly data on People's sleep patterns is so profitable but yeah no way am I inviting data tracking and biometric harvesting into my bed with me.

I kinda wanna reverse/side engineer a replica you can DIY because fuck Nintendo.

Unfortunately your guide links to stuff on adafruit that's out of stock - mostly the screen/microprocessor...

I found this guide that has a walk through with full code and an easy to use library for making the interface quite a bit better:

https://www.makerguides.com/digital-clock-crowpanel-3-5-display/

I'm going to be building two initially for myself and my girlfriends kid but once I work out the details I'll post it up on the fediverse somewhere with the full code to get going.

I am much more keen to use C instead of Python for something like a clock although I'm sure circuit-python is fast enough, id rather stick to native libraries.

Very nice! I did not look too deep, just found something similar.

[-] luciole@beehaw.org 20 points 1 month ago

Do you guys not have phones?

Maybe it's just an out-of-season April fool's joke

[-] Aatube@kbin.melroy.org 5 points 1 month ago

I think it's meant to watch you get up instead of just stop it and then lay in bed for 3 minutes + get cash grabbed

i also do in fact have a slight curiosity of how much i move during sleep so i know why the heck i got a muscle strain on both of my legs waking up last week

[-] Seigest@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 month ago

Between this and Pokémon sleep I'm questioning why Nintendo needs to watch us sleep.

[-] yetAnotherUser@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 month ago

Two reasons:

  • Sleep data can give some information on your health but isn't regulated as strictly as health data. Health data == Money
  • Companies want your time and attention. TV manufacturers want you to use your TV as much as possible, social media companies want you to use their platform as much as possible, video game developers want you to play their games as much as possible. Nintendo successfully gained people's time when outside through Pokèmon Go already. Now they're trying to expand to your time sleeping. There's not much time left which isn't utilized by companies somewhat. Maybe there will be a Pokèmon School/Work soon?

Announcing a new partnership with Jira…

[-] GammaGames@beehaw.org 4 points 1 month ago

They’ve had this type of stuff in the works for at least a decade

[-] tuckerm@supermeter.social 14 points 1 month ago

They keep using the term "motion sensor," probably to avoid saying "this device that you will place next to your kid's bed has a camera and an internet connection."

(related community if that makes you nearly have an aneurysm: !privacy@lemmy.ml)

edit: OK, it probably doesn't actually have a camera, see comment below. I assumed it had to, since it mentioned detecting "hand gestures." However, that could mean that it just roughly detects you waving in front of it, which wouldn't require a camera. I still hate it.

[-] key@lemmy.keychat.org 19 points 1 month ago

The features described could be accomplished with a PIR motion sensor. I don't see any reason they'd go to the expense of adding a camera, especially since infrared is better for operating in the dark like you'd expect for an alarm clock that'll need to be able to wake kids at 6am in the winter.

[-] tuckerm@supermeter.social 4 points 1 month ago

This is a good point.

[-] thingsiplay@beehaw.org 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I've tried to correct the perspective in GIMP. There are probably better quality versions of the image, but I just wanted to have fun.

  • INGESTION HAZARD: This product contains a button or cell or coin battery
  • DEATH or serious injury can occur if ~~in???sted~~ ingested
  • A swallowed button cell or coin battery can cause Internal Chemical Burns ~~??~~ in as little as 2 hours
  • KEEP new and used batteries OUT OF REACH of CHILDREN
  • Seek immediate medical attention if a battery is suspected to be swallowed or inserted inside any part of the body

Wait a minute, inserted any part of the body?

Edit: Thanks to GlennicusM filling out the stuff I could not read.

Filled in the blanks for you.

[-] thingsiplay@beehaw.org 2 points 1 month ago

Thank you. :-) I'll correct edit.

[-] savvywolf@pawb.social 12 points 1 month ago

Okay, so there's two lines I could go down for this.

The first is to joke about the recent controversy, and say that they're only doing this so they can sue other alarm clock manufacturers for patent infringement.

The second is a wordplay by calling it "the s-watch". But that doesn't really translate well to text.

[-] Midnitte@beehaw.org 8 points 1 month ago

Switch 2 taking on a crazy form

[-] subignition@fedia.io 6 points 1 month ago

What... are they even doing with this

[-] hobbsc 5 points 1 month ago

All my homies hate Nintendo.

[-] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 4 points 1 month ago

I think this is actually kinda cool. But I wish they had custom "Nintendo sounds" made specifically for the clock rather than game noises.

I feel like this would be a sure-fire way to make me feel negative emotions when hearing various game sounds.
