That capitalism is responsible for planetary destruction and other environmental harm is also nonsense. In addition to longer and better lives, capitalism has delivered a high degree of environmental cleanliness. Mass production of the automobile cleaned cities by ridding streets of horses and disease-attracting horse manure. Vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, air fresheners, washers and driers, ventilation systems, disinfecting wipes — the virtually unlimited products that make our immediate environments cleaner are today all affordable and widely available because of capitalism.

"Virtually" doing a lot of the lifting in "virtually unlimited" there.

Where is the person who wrote this, I will find and eat them.

[-] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 13 points 14 hours ago

before vacuum cleaners you just had hard floors and you swept and mopped them. air fresheners existed before capitalism it was called hanging herbs in your home to dry and also fresh flowers and having a garden. people washed and dried clothes all throughout human history. we have cars AND human shit in our streets. i have natural a natural diswasher... my hands.

also disinfecting wipes dont disinfect. to disinfect you need to use a solution, like that in a wipe, and wet the area and keep it wet for like 30 seconds to a minute. people dont do this. they wipe the thing with a quick swipe and move along, doing virtually nothing to disinfect it and just exposing themselves to dangerous chemicals. thanks capitalism

I didn't encounter even the slightest shred of anti capitalist ideology until i was a fucking adult

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 28 points 16 hours ago

Schools in the West never complain about capitalism lmao

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with chuds and how do I find a way to live in their fantasies where our school system is Marxist?

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 11 points 14 hours ago

They even believe Marxists are in the US government. I remember watching a Tim Pool video where one of his guests (an Australian or New Zealander?) was saying that the US government is infiltrated by communists.

Most chuds believe this btw, this isn't some crazy minority. I've also talked to chuds who think Twitter before Musk had "leftist" policy lmao. The cold war really destroyed people's brains.

[-] RoabeArt@hexbear.net 7 points 13 hours ago

I've heard Kamala Harris get referred to as "Commiemala" quite a few times in the lead up to the election, even though she's nowhere close to the vicinity of being communist.

Twitter before Musk had "leftist" policy lmao.

I got permabanned from pre-Musk Twitter for telling Donald Trump Junior to be more like JFK Junior and get in a small plane.

Highest living standards for whom motherfucker, for whom? big-honk

[-] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 43 points 19 hours ago

And how, specifically, did they do that? three-heads-thinking

[-] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 34 points 19 hours ago

Also compared to what? "Capitalism, but it had less industry"? "Capitalism's direct ancestor, which was just cruder and less developed but which fundamentally behaved exactly the same just worse, and also there was much less industry"?

Because any time you compare states with even remotely comparable amounts of industrial capital, the socialist state comes out ahead. Which is just a big "no shit" sort of thing: of course a state that sets out to use wealth to meet people's needs and build up the economy is going to do better than a comparable state that sets wealth on fire so some idle fancy lad can chortle and clap and bark like a seal watching it burn for his pleasure. "Successful" capitalist states only attain a modest standard of living within their borders through superexploitation of client states abroad and legally/socially unpersoned minorities internally.

You see, the proles have treats, that means they're free!

[-] homhom9000@hexbear.net 21 points 18 hours ago

No see, it's true that's why we have to tell them how true it is.

[-] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 11 points 15 hours ago

We already do, that's the funniest thing. Outside of humanities departments and radical spaces most people just take in the narrative of capitalist development wholesalezizek-fuck , and they don't even see it because it's "common sense" gramsci-heh

[-] Rojo27@hexbear.net 66 points 19 hours ago

Schools should stop teaching lies about capitalism

Haha, baseddean-smile

Oh...dean-frown

[-] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 45 points 18 hours ago

They're doing that typical capitalist thing where they point to the wealth of parasitic colonizer nations as "proof" that capitalism brings prosperity by gesturing to capitalist nations that are more wealthy than socialist nations, as if every country existed in a vacuum and the wealth of capitalist countries weren't only made possible by exploiting and impoverishing vast swathes of the globe.

This is why reading theory and developing a materialist understanding of the world is important.

[-] Rod_Blagojevic@hexbear.net 25 points 16 hours ago

They also ignore their own vast underclasses.

[-] urmums401k@hexbear.net 17 points 15 hours ago

Nuh uh! We have police for them!

[-] Rod_Blagojevic@hexbear.net 9 points 14 hours ago

Self criticism moment for me. What I said was objectively untrue.

[-] dkr567@hexbear.net 46 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

Any opinion articles (or any articles actually) from either financial post or national post should automatically be ignored if you want to preserve your sanity for any non Canadians that run into their literal bullshit.

[-] Thordros@hexbear.net 26 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

Or virtually any local newspaper in Canada, since nearly all of them are also owned by Postmedia. Which is owned by American finance ghouls.

how many native nations crushed by settler colonialism have higher living standards today than they did before europeans showed up?

[-] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 31 points 18 hours ago

porky-happy We need kids to learn the truth about how great capitalism is for their living standards!

porky-point But only after they have, personally, paid off all of their lunch debt!

From 1900 to 2021, world average life expectancy rose from 32 years to 71 years — an astonishing increase that was not the result of people buying nothing and consuming nothing.

Look at Chinese life expectancy under Mao

In 1984, a United Nations report identified East Germany as the most polluted country in Europe; in 1990 the Washington Post reported that Bitterfeld, an East German city south of Berlin, was “the dirtiest place in the most polluted country in the world, according to government statistics and Greenpeace.”

And yet Beijing, one of the most polluted cities a decade ago transformed itself. GDR and socialist countries never got the chance. And don't forget why Clean Air Act had to be implemented .

The article cited:

"Sulfur dioxide is indeed the crucial issue, Mr. Herrmann agrees. The resources-poor GDR depends on native brown coal for 82 percent of its electricity generation, and it has a high sulfur content. Some 4 million tons of sulfur dioxide belched out of East German smokestacks in 1970 and will probably do so again in 1985, the German Economic Institute says. Herrmann disputes this projection and anticipates a slight reduction in sulfur dioxide levels next year."

I wonder if total government annexation and neoliberal reforms had anything to do with that bullshit

i hate liberals so much

I'm surprised there's any schools that are teaching these "lies". I thought they all taught that communism is when no food. It's what I was taught.

[-] YoungSheldonAdelson@hexbear.net 28 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Going to school in the US from the mid-90s into the 00s we weren't taught that there were any world systems at all in our classrooms. Every action was created and maintained through sheer individual will and intelligence alone. The people at the top of the social structure were merely the ones with the most of that drive, and that is why they are at the top of this meritocratic order and have all the money and power.

So when our teachers and parents left us behind or neglected us and then attempted to placate us with sugar, anti-depressants, adhd meds, and screens it was an individual failing and not the evidence of a sick society that turned mass child abuse and ignorance about it into another capitalist profit industry.

[-] urmums401k@hexbear.net 8 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Yeah I'm doing communism right now, intermittently to lose weight. Learned about this in health class, actually.

Its really stressful in ways I didn't expect, because I eat a lot of fresh stuff and I'm worried about waste and stuff going bad on my communism days.

[-] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 34 points 19 hours ago

Gee I wonder if something called the Financial Post could have ulterior motives

[-] Rom@hexbear.net 27 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Are we teaching them that before or after the school shooter drill?
