It was established in 1922 as a union of four socialist republics created after the 1917 October Revolution, namely the Russian SFSR, the Transcaucasian SFSR, the Ukrainian SSR and Byelorussian SSR. The years that followed saw the addition of the Uzbek and Tajik SSRs; the Transcaucasian SFSR was dissolved in 1936 in favor of the elevated SSRs of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. From 1956 to 1991, the union comprised 15 member republics, two of which had their own member seats at the United Nations.

The USSR represented a groundbreaking political alternative for the working class as the first stable socialist state in history. This was remarkable especially in a time period where workers in the Western world were still struggling for basic union rights; the 1924 Soviet Constitution and the 1936 Soviet Constitution represented some of the most progressive political advancements in history.

The Soviet Union developed under extreme pressure from capitalist states and global imperialism; during the Russian Civil War, starting from 1918, it suffered successive invasions by Britain, France, the United States, Japan, Poland, and several other minor European powers. Some of these interventions temporarily succeeded in overthrowing local soviets and installing anti-communist puppet regimes, although they were ultimately unsuccessful in preventing the founding of the Soviet Union.

Barely two decades later, during World War II, the Nazi invasion represented the second imperialist war on the USSR, this time in the name of fascism. Although the fascists inflicted catastrophic damage on the western USSR and its population, the Red Army ultimately succeeded in repelling the Nazi forces and went on to play an integral role in the defeat of German Nazism in 1945.

Despite these difficulties, the Soviet Union achieved some of the most impressive economic developments in modern history. Socialism transformed a country of illiterate and starving peasants into an industrial superpower with one of the fastest growing economies on Earth. The Soviet people were one of the world's best-educated and healthiest populations, responsible for some of history's most impressive industrial and scientific achievements to date. And it provided a very influential model for other later socialist projects in places such as China, Cuba and Vietnam.

Starting from 1988, many SSRs seceded from the USSR before its illegal overthrow in 1991. Its past territory is now occupied by the successor states of Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, Pridnestrovie, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Artsakh, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

Going to meet my partner’s family much sooner than anticipated due to a family emergency, gonna go to a huge dinner with the whole extended family too. Thankfully (?) the older folks don’t speak much English so I won’t be expected to chat with them a lot but it’s still a hell of a lot of pressure. She’s an absolute sweetheart that I like a lot but maaaaan it’s moving too fast. We’ve only been dating for two months and it already feels like I’m in too deep to be having second thoughts now. Already living together, saying I love you, discussing the possibility of marriage/kids, and now meeting her entire family as well. I have never gotten to that stage in a relationship before, even one that lasted over three years.

Definitely going to be an interesting week, her dad is a prominent politician there in Taiwan so I hope I can bite my tongue enough to not piss off her entire family lol. He’s supposedly very pro China but I’m not entirely sure what that actually means in the context of Taiwanese politics 🤔

The hospital my mom's been going to feels like it was modeled after Black Mesa in HL1. Very convoluted. By the time I reach her after dropping her off here, she'll likely be done with her tests.

@barrbaric@hexbear.net first couple of time I tried it I failed pretty hard, I got on the job grind and got most of them 4 level 99 in different jobs each before attempting it again. Honestly not much structurally changes compared to the final millennium tower only thing that threw me off was final boss calling 3 of the former bosses for back up midway through the fight. I did feel satisfied afterward but honestly not much is gonna hold a candle to that and I'm not really one for new game+ since while I love the story I ain't getting through it twice.

Found out my mother just bought herself another iPad. Literally keeps buying shit she doesn't know how to use and doesn't need and then goes "it makes me happy" like the biggest fucking loser. Bought a shitty Intel Atom laptop she doesn't need last year that runs like shit when she had an Air that worked and works perfectly fine minus all the bloatware she put onto it. Her iPhone has like 300 apps installed on it and it takes her like 10 seconds to find anything because she installs every app she can find for some reason.

I'm not opposed to her buying shit she actually needs, but she squanders it on digital junk. Could have gotten herself something useful and nice but instead hemorrhages money on this stuff.

Dude I'm having a fucking MELTDOWN alright hear me out please

It's one of my BIGGEST PET PEEVES when a song fades out on a rad guitar solo, my go-to example usually being Mr. Crowley by Ozzy

So I listen to a lot of video game music obviously, and I especially like listening to really awesome tracks that go unappreciated, and the great thing about video game music is that it usually loops, especially when it's some type of battle theme, so if there's a sick guitar solo it's not gonna fade out on it, right? RIGHT??????? YOU'D FUCKINGDF THINK SO BUT in the game Battle Arena Toshinden 2, there's a character named Sho and his theme is fucking dope, and there's an awesome solo at the end but every upload of it on youtube fuckin fades out on that solo! And I'm like, what the fuck dude, it's a fucking battle theme in a video game! It HAS TO LOOP! Where is the rest of the solo? Where is the loop??

So I'm like, alright, maybe all these uploaders are just copying the same rip from each other, so instead I search for direct uploads of the soundtrack ripped from the game... but EVERY upload of the song fades out. So I never played Toshinden 2, I only played the first one. At this point I am starting to wonder if it doesn't actually loop properly and just fades out and then starts again with a hard cut to the beginning?? I'm about to download a fucking ISO and try to figure out wtf is happening for myself

Been going over the warranty my parents got for the used truck they bought, figure best go over now when everything good instead of 3 am or whatever. Got a good idea what's covered now though I was hoping my specific issue would be there. Oil filter housing stuck so can't really change the paper filter, took it to a place too and nope. This not being something listed in the warranty means means it's out of pocket still worth looking thru

End of the year self reflection: I love people and dynamic communities of people being together. Whenever I traveled before with friends or family, they always wanted to see museums and palaces while I wanted to just walk around neighbourhoods and see how people lived. I especially love commie blocks because they’re often build to foster community and on every balcony you see a different play of a family or person living their life.

When I was young I had this picture book of a gnome community in which every little detail about the community was explained with beautiful drawings. It included descriptions of workers and how their work contributes to the community. I think that’s a wonderful idea for a (children’s) book. I’d love to read such a book about ant communities.
