It was established in 1922 as a union of four socialist republics created after the 1917 October Revolution, namely the Russian SFSR, the Transcaucasian SFSR, the Ukrainian SSR and Byelorussian SSR. The years that followed saw the addition of the Uzbek and Tajik SSRs; the Transcaucasian SFSR was dissolved in 1936 in favor of the elevated SSRs of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. From 1956 to 1991, the union comprised 15 member republics, two of which had their own member seats at the United Nations.

The USSR represented a groundbreaking political alternative for the working class as the first stable socialist state in history. This was remarkable especially in a time period where workers in the Western world were still struggling for basic union rights; the 1924 Soviet Constitution and the 1936 Soviet Constitution represented some of the most progressive political advancements in history.

The Soviet Union developed under extreme pressure from capitalist states and global imperialism; during the Russian Civil War, starting from 1918, it suffered successive invasions by Britain, France, the United States, Japan, Poland, and several other minor European powers. Some of these interventions temporarily succeeded in overthrowing local soviets and installing anti-communist puppet regimes, although they were ultimately unsuccessful in preventing the founding of the Soviet Union.

Barely two decades later, during World War II, the Nazi invasion represented the second imperialist war on the USSR, this time in the name of fascism. Although the fascists inflicted catastrophic damage on the western USSR and its population, the Red Army ultimately succeeded in repelling the Nazi forces and went on to play an integral role in the defeat of German Nazism in 1945.

Despite these difficulties, the Soviet Union achieved some of the most impressive economic developments in modern history. Socialism transformed a country of illiterate and starving peasants into an industrial superpower with one of the fastest growing economies on Earth. The Soviet people were one of the world's best-educated and healthiest populations, responsible for some of history's most impressive industrial and scientific achievements to date. And it provided a very influential model for other later socialist projects in places such as China, Cuba and Vietnam.

Starting from 1988, many SSRs seceded from the USSR before its illegal overthrow in 1991. Its past territory is now occupied by the successor states of Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, Pridnestrovie, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Artsakh, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

Got in the gym for the first time in a little while and it was real nice. I hurt my back the previous time I'd gone and then the snow started, so I basically stopped working out for a month. My muscles were definitely getting smaller, but I didn't lose as much strength as I was scared of. Also it was wicked fucking good for my mood. I know there are a lot of factors contributing to me feeling like dogshit recently, but not exercising is definitely one of them - and one that is tractable.

Uh... mixed end to 2024 and start to 2025.

-Got a response from muy old friend and my crush. My friends response was a bit muted, but appreciated. My crush ended up flooding me with texts though lol.

-But while we were texting I got home and my dad was in bed not feeling well. Took a quick shower and by the time I finished by brother had called an ambulance for him. Thankfully he's already feeling a lot better, but he's still in the hospital. New Year hit just as my mom and I were headed to the hospital to take some stuff for my brother and dad.

Oh and I also got to see an apartment that looked alright. Strongly considering it. So yeah... Happy New Year comradesvery-normal

Yglesias makes a good point on his blog - he wasn't doing a coverup, he is just very stupid!

Three semi-optimistic things I have noticed:

  • Despite Elon’s BS, younger Americans are ditching the slacker culture of the boomers. Try going to the gym. It is packed like all the time, back in college more often than not people were in shape and ate really healthy. You can make a case that even the reason employers are so picky these days is because American workers are just so competent and hard-working the standards have been raised that high. Our generation is not lazy.

  • to follow-up on before, from now to when I was a kid, the food scene in the us has changed for the better. A lot less processed spray cheese and good ol’ fruits and vegetables are what’s “cool” now. Even though im-vegan: at least the meats are much better quality and actually somewhat healthier like wild-caught salmon than the slop from even 20 years ago. Real food is what’s in-demand these days.

  • New York passed a law so oil companies are now responsible for compensating the state for cc damages. California also banned octopus farming, so there are still environmental wins to be had even in the great satan.

Repeating this as a mantra for the next ten hours:

Do not message crush at midnight. It won’t even be 2025 for her it’ll be the middle of the day and she’ll be sober, leave that poor woman alone y’all will literally never meet again. “Haha happy new year from the future!! Let me know if you decide to follow through on those plans to come back to this part of the world in a few months!” <—— statements made by the insane

Big year for Johnny Depp. His ex and girlfriend were in a movie together, the same movie the ex was in when they dated, and his daughter led in a movie too. Though unrelated.

Been eating an insane amount of food for a few months. I ate an 18 pack of full size candy bars in 4 days, plus a normal amount of regular food. A 2 pound box of caramel turtles in one day. I made a bunch of practice pies in anticipation of Thanksgiving and ate 90% of them.

I was burning an extra 2500+ calories a week running so I hadn't put on weight, but the weather has been crappy and I gained 8 pounds. Gotta reset my appetite, all I crave now is calorie dense food. Going to buy some veggies today.
