In 1984, history and the truth were censored. Censoring bigots is not anything like 1984, so allowing hate speech doesn’t make you automatically not a fascist. In fact, it’s what fascists do.
I'm starting to think that Trump may have promised them a big tax break or something if they pivoted to an alt-right platform. Despite what people say, Meta's platforms and the company itself was always pretty Democrat in terms of rules (not talking about the moderation here). For example they removed the LGBT chat backgrounds, but these had to be added at some point. Idk this pivot seems too fast, it feels like they are trying to prove something rather than actually being MAGA. Kind of like they are playing pretend.
For me it's the part where they say things like "we were Maga for all this time but we were afraid to say it" and then in a single day the company does a complete 180? A change like this would have been more progressive in my opinion, meta is a large company and they have been doing A/B testing for a long time. It really surprises me that they would do something like this so fast
I wish there was one journalist out there somewhere that would ask Meta if these new policies will be included in their HR handbook so their employees can say this stuff to each other. And when they say no, ask them why not.
He can't be fucking serious. LMAO. OMG. What alternative reality are we living in now?
The more his hair grows to resemble oversized pubes, the more his soul does the same
And I really thought manipulating people's reality by drowning them in desinformation contrary to observable reality, facts or anything they were told before was a theme in 1984. We are basically seeing step 1 happening right now, the (arguably harder) next step once people stop believing reality over the shit they are fed is getting the fictional narrative consistent.
But I guess I just read the wrong book...
I don't think it's 1984 but more so Brave New World.
Because in Brave New World, Huxley's worries were that we'd be drowning in irrelevancy from the truth.
But to be honest, in the past two decades that I've paid attention to society and how it functions. We're living in a mish-mash of Brave New World and 1984 together. There is no strict side that we're living in, unless it depends where you are so I'm referring to America, but it's both of the worst of worlds from either case.
Nono you see. 1984 is when we try stopping 1984 from happening, I guess.
No. No it wasn't. It was 100% voluntary on his part. He could have told the government to fuck off. He had that legal right.
You want 1984? How about your plan to replace everyone in the media with people who are more compliant, Zuckerberg?
Could? He did tell the gov to fuck off!
Great, partial, breakdown of this issue: https://bsky.app/profile/mmasnick.bsky.social/post/3lfgh7dbglk2d
You want 1984?
Zuckerberg doesn't want 1984. Or not 1984. Or tyranny. Or democracy. Or free speech. Or censorship. All he wants is money. All he ever does, like all the other psychopathic billionnaires, is whatever it takes to make more money.
He's stated in the past he thinks he's the reincarnation of a Roman emperor, I think he wants power and money is the one way of doing that he's been able to pull off.
It's a figure of speech. It's a way to show someone's being a hypocrite and a liar.
I know what he wants.
Unlike Elmo, the Zuck is a reptile. He can save costs with moderation teams while increasing political influence in a time where TikTok can get banned. Of course he’s doing it.
In fairness, I could almost get onboard with Zuckerbaywatch's line of thinking: too little moderation is generally healthier than too much moderation.
But here's the thing: he's suddenly having a change of heart and a newfound love for free speech right after going to Mar-a-Lago to brownnose the orange utan.
What a despicable individual... And I bet he doesn't even realize how nauseating a human being he is, because hubris and money totally numb his sense of shame.
Human being?
1984 literally ends with the protagonist winning the stuggle against himself and loving fascist Big Brother.
If only zuckerbot had actually read the book and understood irony.
I think you mean losing. Winston didn't want to love Big Brother, he was tortured into it. The message was a bleak one where the opposition was a hoax and there will be no escape. Orwell went through the Spanish Civil War only to see Franco win and then saw the horrors of WWII, and despite being a very vocal socialist, he already had completely fallen out of love with the soviets and Stalin.
He did not have an optimistic view of the future.
Edit: If you want to see another view of how Orwell saw the future was going, Coming Up for Air was written on the eve of WWII and was a contemporary novel which, while it has a lot of comedy in it, paints a very ominous picture of where he saw the future going. I like to quote this passage because I think it sums up Orwell's whole pessimistic outlook very well.
Behind the bright red counter a girl in a tall white cap was fiddling with an ice-box, and somewhere at the back a radio was playing, plonk-tiddle-tiddle-plonk, a kind of tinny sound. Why the hell am I coming here? I thought to myself as I went in. There’s a kind of atmosphere about these places that gets me down. Everything slick and shiny and streamlined; mirrors, enamel, and chromium plate whichever direction you look in. Everything spent on the decorations and nothing on the food. No real food at all. Just lists of stuff with American names, sort of phantom stuff that you can’t taste and can hardly believe in the existence of. Everything comes out of a carton or a tin, or it’s hauled out of a refrigerator or squirted out of a tap or squeezed out of a tube. No comfort, no privacy. Tall stools to sit on, a kind of narrow ledge to eat off, mirrors all round you. A sort of propaganda floating round, mixed up with the noise of the radio, to the effect that food doesn’t matter, comfort doesn’t matter, nothing matters except slickness and shininess and streamlining. Everything’s streamlined nowadays, even the bullet Hitler’s keeping for you. I ordered a large coffee and a couple of frankfurters. The girl in the white cap jerked them at me with about as much interest as you’d throw ants’ eggs to a goldfish.
Outside the door a newsboy yelled ‘Starnoosstannerd!’ I saw the poster flapping against his knees: LEGS. FRESH DISCOVERIES. Just ‘legs’, you notice. It had got down to that. Two days earlier they’d found a woman’s legs in a railway waiting-room, done up in a brown-paper parcel, and what with successive editions of the papers, the whole nation was supposed to be so passionately interested in these blasted legs that they didn’t need any further introduction. They were the only legs that were news at the moment. It’s queer, I thought, as I ate a bit of roll, how dull the murders are getting nowadays. All this cutting people up and leaving bits of them about the countryside. Not a patch on the old domestic poisoning dramas, Crippen, Seddon, Mrs Maybrick; the truth being, I suppose, that you can’t do a good murder unless you believe you’re going to roast in hell for it.
At this moment I bit into one of my frankfurters, and—Christ!
I can’t honestly say that I’d expected the thing to have a pleasant taste. I’d expected it to taste of nothing, like the roll. But this—well, it was quite an experience. Let me try and describe it to you.
The frankfurter had a rubber skin, of course, and my temporary teeth weren’t much of a fit. I had to do a kind of sawing movement before I could get my teeth through the skin. And then suddenly—pop! The thing burst in my mouth like a rotten pear. A sort of horrible soft stuff was oozing all over my tongue. But the taste! For a moment I just couldn’t believe it. Then I rolled my tongue round it again and had another try. It was fish! A sausage, a thing calling itself a frankfurter, filled with fish! I got up and walked straight out without touching my coffee. God knows what that might have tasted of.
You're not wrong. My point is that zuck now loves trump in the same way as the protagonist loved Big Brother.
How to create 1984:
Step 1: Say that anything that prevents 1984 is 1984.
