Tbh, this is probably the malicious compliance I was hoping would happen

[-] HumanBehaviorByBjork@hexbear.net 86 points 11 months ago

yeah, like all these laws DeSantis is passing are trying to target trans people specifically, but there's no easy way to write a law that says "you need to make trans kids and only trans kids miserable" without the full ideological buy-in of the enforcers

[-] TillieNeuen@hexbear.net 59 points 11 months ago

Yeah, making Jack and Kim get permission to not be called John and Kimberly is actually encouraging--there are some people at least who aren't using the law solely to harass trans kids.

[-] ClimateChangeAnxiety@hexbear.net 55 points 11 months ago

And specifically citing the law forcing them to do it, to say “And if you’re annoyed by this, this is who to be mad at”

[-] 420blazeit69@hexbear.net 8 points 11 months ago

Hopefully "why can't I be called the name I want to go by?" is a teachable moment.

[-] DroneRights@hexbear.net 4 points 11 months ago

I fully maintain that Florida teachers need to ban he and she pronouns in class. Every student is a they until the don't say gender bill is repealed.

[-] WoofWoof91@hexbear.net 85 points 11 months ago

holy shit, that's a real thing?
my mum would have gotten so many emails lol

[-] RNAi@hexbear.net 96 points 11 months ago

Hello Mrs Smith, I'm calling you because of your son Bobby. Everyone at school calls him either "Meatball" or "Landwhale", so we suspect he's transing his gender so he's been sent to youth prison and you need to pay a fine

[-] WoofWoof91@hexbear.net 82 points 11 months ago

i had a mate called "cumsock" lol

[-] WittyProfileName2@hexbear.net 12 points 11 months ago

Bloke I knew in primary had been nicknamed "cheese" for so long that everyone forgot why. Lot of his peers didn't even know his real name, he was just Cheese to everyone.

Yes, and the UK is about to or has just passed similar legislation that forces teachers to out queer students to their parents.

CW s__cideAnd when you know the statistics about how acceptance at home and in schools affects the suicidality of queer teenagers, you can't help but regard such laws as institutional infanticide.
Anybody in support of this should be treated as an accessory to child murder.

[-] GarfieldYaoi@hexbear.net 15 points 11 months ago

All this just because some teenagers on tumblr were mean to white men in 2011?

I never want to hear them to tell anyone to "grow a thicker skin" ever again.

omg geno s from one punch man cide

[-] kzhe@lemm.ee 76 points 11 months ago

Happened at my high school. All nicknames need parental slips.

[-] BigHaas@hexbear.net 74 points 11 months ago

Refer to everyone as comrade lastname and see how long the policy lasts.

[-] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 35 points 11 months ago

Brilliant idea! My go to would have been making more work for them. I'd tell people I changed my mind about my nickname until they got sick of me and I'd get in trouble. If I had some friends who were down for the cause it would have been a nightmare. Cause I'm the type of comrade who, once in detention and they're trying to be real serious and talk sternly with me, if I had a single audience member who would have found it funny I'd double down on the bit

*"Now WDYMP, I'm going to tell you right now, our name policy is important bec-"

"It's Peter"*

Tangentially, I credit some of my success and enjoyment of combat sports to this disposition. If you lack the authority to simply throw the book at me because we're sparring, then you better have an answer to my silly question (e.g. what if I just push you?) or I'm going to win by outsmarting you.

[-] Nagarjuna@hexbear.net 13 points 11 months ago

what if I just push you?

The perfectly valid technique of open-handed posting

At near peak toxic, you can club the head in an attempt to get control of the back of it in wrestling. It's started many fights that wind up with the person getting clubbed getting DQ'd for retaliation.

[-] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 11 points 11 months ago

Are teachers required to call people by their nicknames if the parents sign for it? I think it's time for Peterucio (Not Petrucio) to make an appearance

[-] Judge_Jury@hexbear.net 49 points 11 months ago

Absolutely unhinged

[-] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 12 points 11 months ago

"Woah woah you can't call that kid slur"

"It's free speech!"

"Yeah I know, but slur isn't an approved name. Try calling him a slur instead"

[-] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 63 points 11 months ago

I wonder if you could SQL-interject the system á la little bobby droptables

[-] absentthereaper@lemmygrad.ml 26 points 11 months ago

"And what did we learn about input sanitization?"

[-] buckykat@hexbear.net 6 points 11 months ago

SQL interjection is when you replace all table entries with the GNU+Linux copypasta

Makes me think of California Uber alles for some reason.

Knock knock at your front door.
It's the blue suede denim police.
They have come for you uncool niece!

I guess they'd be the Oakley thumb police though, and they'd be coming for your cool not-a niece (is the a non gendered term for niece/nephew?)

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 22 points 11 months ago

is the a non gendered term for niece/nephew?

Nibling.

I'm sorry but that's an awful word. It sounds like some moist creature living in the mold between unwashed toes

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 15 points 11 months ago

I don't think it's very wildly used yet, so if you're gonna astroturf a competitor, now's the time.

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 15 points 11 months ago

Well nephews first vowel is an e, and niece is an i, so it makes sense that the next word in the line would use the next vowel, which is an o.
Nooble is obviously the correct answer.

[-] Zuzak@hexbear.net 10 points 11 months ago

Just call 'em noobs at that point.

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 8 points 11 months ago

Nah, they're far more advanced in the field of gender than binaries. They're multiclassing.

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 8 points 11 months ago

Lol. You're ignoring its relationg to sibling tho. Noobling?

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 7 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Well since niece and nephew are so far removed from sister and brother, I just didnt feel like sibling was relevant.
Perhaps an amalgamation of the words is better Niesphew? Sounds like a sneeze.
Alternatively it can make use of the vowel "a" and be first in line. Nabble and nabling are both acceptable.
I would however still argue against having it be like "sibling" since my sister is a sibling like how my nabble would be a nabbling

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 9 points 11 months ago

I feel like I might be in over my head on this. Might wanna email chomsky-yes-honey

Iowa Senate File 496 [PDF]: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/publications/LGE/90/SF496.pdf

If a student enrolled in a school district requests an accommodation that is intended to affirm the student’s gender identity from a licensed practitioner employed by the school district, including a request that the licensed practitioner address the student using a name or pronoun that is different than the name or pronoun assigned to the student in the school district’s registration forms or records, the licensed practitioner shall report the student’s request to an administrator employed by the school district, and the administrator shall report the student’s request to the student’s parent or guardian.

For the first violation, you get a written warning. Subsequent violations get disciplinary hearings.
