I kept saying this would happen. Citizens will be detained and eventually probably deported. Because Trump literally believes that people can just have their citizenship taken away from them on a whim.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 68 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yep, me too all because they were brown. Racism was always the point of Trump deportation stick. And fucking mega base is loving it. We can thank those who set at the election and the never Harris crowd for now all stuck in this hellhole. Except for FlyingSquid who luckily was able to escape. But fucking people had just voted he would had to escape which probably wasn't easy.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 43 points 1 week ago (12 children)

It is not easy, but it is something I was lucky to be able to do. Right now, no job, my savings are running out, my wife (a librarian, risking imprisonment) is still stuck in the U.S., and if I don't find anything in a couple of months, what I do have saved up will be gone and I don't know what we'll do.

But yeah, a lot of people will be worse off than us and I'm sorry.

As another librarian, it's fucking terrifying work these days. We are beloved by the people but a giant target for this administration. I loved this work for decades but I'm about to flee for industry because I'm exhausted. We're also not super portable, library jobs are hard to come by and those outside the US are hot right now.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm sorry too that you had to flee and go through your savings (which probably took lot time to even do) and start over in other country. I am trying to find work here in the states and having a hard time so I can't imagine what your going through. I hope it works out for both of us. Good luck for both of us.

It's already happened in Arizona before. It's why Joe Arpaio was convicted -- contempt for continuing to profile and round up immigrants after a court told him to stop. Pardoned by Trump.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 29 points 1 week ago

And even after all that and tent cities, he ran for office again. Didn’t win but the fact he was even allowed to try again is a major flaw in the system

I worry for a cousin of mine.

He's Vietnamese and was adopted by my aunt and uncle about 15 years ago or so. By all accounts he's now a U.S. citizen. He's in college. Doing great.

But he IS brown. I'm pretty sure my uncle voted for trump for some dumbass reason. I worry my cousin could be caught up in some raid at some point.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 73 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I'm white and hang out with mostly white people who don't understand how scary this is.

I ask them if they can prove to me - right now - that they're a citizen. Lots of them legitimately think a Driver's License is enough.

I explain that it is not proof of citizenship and that lots of people have licenses without being a citizen. So if they were brown, they might be arrested based on their lack of papers.

And once arrested and sent to a camp, your ability to produce any documentation you may have diminishes to almost nothing.

Also, a bad agent can just get rid of your passport. So carry a photocopy, and let the lawyer your family gets show up with the real one in court.

[–] itslilith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 week ago

Get a passport card. It's valid ID, proves you're a citizen, and doesn't have your address on it so cops and the fascists from ICE don't learn where you live. Keep the original passport somewhere secure, like you said

Demand your white friends show them their green card or birth certificate.

If you think that's a joke, ask around. I've been asked that twice in my life. But because I'm not Default American™, I have to prove a lot harder that I was born here.

Yeah, but that doesn't effect them, so why should they care?

/s, obviously.

[–] EchoCranium@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 week ago

My cousin and his wife adopted their son from Guatemala. Great kid, growing up to become an admirable adult. They're right-wing Trump supporters in the state of Florida. I know they voted for this shit, and probably don't conceive of the idea this could ever harm THEIR son. But all it takes is the fact that he doesn't look American enough to some racist in a uniform for him to get snatched up in a sweep. Really hope he doesn't face this kind of harassment, but now its become much more likely.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 86 points 1 week ago (38 children)

The accelerationist fucks can all get fucked. We told you spreading anti-democratic sentiment and allowing those doing so to lie on social media would lead to shit like this but no, we had to be told we love genocide and be otherwise dismissed. We were fucking right and any rational, un brainwashed person could see it.

Inb4 "oh you can't allow any criticism of Democrats. Duopoly, fascist. GeNoCiDe bLuE mAgA blahhh".

Yeah we all can and certainly should be unloading criticism on democrats but when you're headed to a country-ending election you are an irresponsible idiot if you can't do it with the caveat that it's extremely important to vote against trump. We're reaping what these idiots sowed and it probably will mostly hurt society's most vulnerable.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 72 points 1 week ago (4 children)

They've moved on to "it's not my fault I chose not to vote, the Democrats didn't promise me a pony".

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 30 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh they already got ahead on that -- I read "the democrats platform sucks so no wonder [fascism isn't a big deal]" kind of shit for months before the election

Send 'em back where they came from! Oh wait....

[–] Wogi@lemmy.world 69 points 1 week ago (2 children)

When mass deportations started under Hoover it was common that American citizens were swept up and sent to the Southern border of Mexico. Many of them were children who would only learn late in life that they were US citizens. This continued through Eisenhower's presidency.

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 39 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah I'm a white dude and back when I had long hair and didn't understand civil rights I got illegally detained dozens of times. Profiling is real, and obviously POC understand this. But also, police have no respect for the constitution or actual rule of law and civil rights. Most of my worst experiences were from police forces in cities mostly ran by authoritarian neolibs.

Can the tribal leaders round up The Mayflower Society and deport them?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 1 week ago

This is a feature, not a bug. They will get sent to camps.

Well, well, well, if it isn't the mask coming off. You're brown, you're out. I'm shocked.

What, you mean the racist people aren't doing a great job verifying which brown people they are supposed to be looking for, and are just grabbing anyone? Shocking...well not that shocking.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 35 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Where are they going to deport them? The past, before the white man came?

Where are they going to deport them?

[–] earphone843@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 week ago

Wherever they can

[–] Sidhean@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

A shallow grave- or wherever they're gonna deport queer folk to, too.
