URL Blocking, at last. Now I can block all those AI shit websites on my communities :D

And being able to comment on locked post, what a nice QoL enhancement :D

Someone ELI5 why Lemmy is or isn't ready for a Reddit Exodus.

Personally, I want it to be. Reddit censorship/shadowbans/deletes is outta control. Imo the problem lemmy has is on Desktop, since on Android there are some great apps like Boost that give it a Reddit-like end user experience, wheras Desktop experience in a browser is No equivalent of RES, or classic reddit. Opening images is very janky. I like RESs 'view images buttons, that untwirls all view image buttons. Using lemmy on desktop is a Chore. I can handle it. But I imagine its very much a bad taste and an impediment to a greater influx of average users.

Its about time we left reddit behind and make Desktop lemmy more welcoming. The times we're in requires a trustable platform. Reddit ain't it.

[–] bappity@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

in my opinion it's the login experience. selecting an instance is too confusing for the average user.

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 hours ago

https://old.lemmy.world/ has a "show images" feature

[–] ticoombs@reddthat.com 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I can't wait! We'll finally get to do a real world test for the parallel sending features!! And if all goes well I'll get to save 5 Euro a month!

Thanks LW

Is that a young dr farnsworth?

[–] Stovetop@lemmy.world 1 points 23 minutes ago

That's the guy who works at the cryogenics facility that Fry was frozen at for 1000 years.

Dr. Farnsworth used to have red hair, the same as his ancestor Fry and his younger clone Cubert.

A picture you can hear, holy. Vividly, lol

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 5 points 15 hours ago

Love your punctuation. I can hear it in Chris Walken's voice

This is the update that'll break sync, right?

Sad times, but I guess I'm gonna be deciding between boost and infinity tomorrow

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 38 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

No it won't. That's the next major release, this is just LW catching up.

[–] MrKaplan@lemmy.world 26 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

partial breakage, the stuff that people on other instances have already been experiencing for a while.

iirc there are still some additional issues with sync arising with the update, but it won't be entirely broken.

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 9 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I'm a sync user and haven't had any issues, what breakage are you referring to?

[–] MrKaplan@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

there are various mentioned in !syncforlemmy@lemmy.world, the main one i was referring to was the one where in some cases posts in local communities won't show comments.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 3 points 14 hours ago

Biggest problem for me is that posts no longer show as read. Makes it almost completely unusable. I switch to Voyager and canceled my premium Sync subscription.

I used sync for reddit for years, but I kinda hope sync dies. But I also have an axe to grind with the dev after they invalidated the app purchases and made people buy it again to not have ads. Plus their inability to update on a regular basis is kinda terrible, and has continued. One of the top posts on the sync community when I checked was to not report PMs because it will actually report a random comment with the same ID, which is just a massive fuck up given the amount of spam PMs.

[–] gofsckyourself@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

they invalidated the app purchases and made people buy it again to not have ads.

Exactly. Not even a discount. I think it was even more expensive than the reddit version.

I just checked. It's $20 to remove ads. Wow.
I also checked to see how much it cost for the reddit version. I paid $4 to remove ads and $5 for the "pro" version. That's more than I've paid for any app. Now they want another $20 to remove ads on an app they neglect and ignore their customers? Disgusting.

Plus their inability to update on a regular basis is kinda terrible, and has continued.

Not just continued, but has gotten worse. Additionally, it's even more important to update more frequently because of the more frequent changes. It was also never fully functional for Lemmy. For example, spoilers have never worked.

To add to all that, they don't even have the decency to pop in for a quick comment or two just to help people feel better.

[–] ThunderWhiskers@lemmy.world -1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

Wow that's a lot of salt for someone trying to value their work higher. Maybe just use a different app? Ironically I was a pro user on Reddit and have never been forced to upgrade on Lemmy as it has never shown me a single ad despite the fact that I would in heartbeat Β―\_(ツ)_/Β― , I have never had issues with any Sync app and I've been a user since...I dunno 2013?

I do agree that JDLawson has become more reclusive but he was never all that interactive with the community to be honest. I don't see that updates or stability of the app has really been an issue. Any time I have had problems they have always been native to Lemmy.

[–] gofsckyourself@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

Wow that's a lot of salt for someone who just wants to express their frustration. Maybe go to another thread?

[–] CosmicCleric@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

But I also have an axe to grind with the dev after they invalidated the app purchases and made people buy it again to not have ads.

Is that even legal?

[–] ByteMe@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

I mean, it was technically a different app, so I guess yes

[–] Glitterkoe@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)
[–] woelkchen@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Try Summit, it’s slick!

Yeah, yet another proprietary app is really the place to go.

Thunder works great, it FOSS, and under active development.

[–] Speculater@lemmy.world 18 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Give Voyager a try as well!!

[–] PM_Your_Nudes_Please@lemmy.world 11 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

+1 for Voyager. It feels like a spiritual successor to Apollo.

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 6 points 15 hours ago

Voyager makes me feel right at home as a former Apollo and RiF user.

[–] Kbobabob@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Former Sync user of around 5 years. Recently switched to summit and it was a pretty easy transition. I've made plenty of rants about how the Dev just abandons paying customers and I finally had enough once I knew that it actually messes things up if you try to report some things.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 7 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I can't make any other app look and feel as nice as Sync, honestly. I was trying out Thunder just now, and maybe I could get used to it but the user avatars don't work for some reason. I don't disagree about ljdawson though and I wish it was different.

[–] paranoid@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

I'm trying out Thunder and like it for the most part, but I can't seem to get messages to work

I am looking way forward to posting images with alt text! They brought that in for 0.19.4 and it's the one thing that I've been really feeling the lack of on here since the start.

[–] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 13 points 18 hours ago

A whole hour of nice and quiet on the Lemmyverse? 😜

Good luck admins! And thanks for doing it during the Carabao cup final so I have something else to occupy my time while lemmy.world is down :)

[–] Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

It's a bit of a shame we don't see any significant new features in this release. Piefed seems to be developing at a much faster pace compared to Lemmy, which is a bit embarrassing tbh.

[–] MrKaplan@lemmy.world 17 points 17 hours ago

considering that we're coming from 0.19.3, this does still introduce quite a few bigger changes for LW.

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

piefed.dbzer0.com you cowards!

[–] mp3@lemmy.ca 15 points 19 hours ago

Hopefully this will improve the sync/federation process between LW and other instances, especially those further away geographically :)

[–] Alphane_Moon@lemmy.world 8 points 18 hours ago

Good luck!

Looking forward to the webUI supporting defined thumbnails per post.

[–] 58008@lemmy.world 9 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

I'm not a dev/programmer, but does the version number starting with a zero suggest that Lemmy is still in a pre-release state? Like alpha or beta or something? If so, what needs to happen before it gets to version 1.0? Just curious! From my layperson's perspective, Lemmy runs great and I have no complaints about it, so I'm not sure what v.1.0 would look like. Or maybe it's all internal stuff that I'll never notice anyway?

[–] Matriks404@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

MAME (Arcade and various consoles/computers emulator) is at version 0.275 and it's been developed since 1996. πŸ˜€

[–] 58008@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Wow πŸ˜†

[–] Rooki@lemmy.world 13 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

You are right.

After 0.19.9 is said to be "1.0"

[–] 58008@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Oh cool! Thank you πŸ‘
