If we're talking fairness, .world is mentally a Reddit fork more than it is a Lemmy instance. Fairness dictates they ~~be purified by fire~~ not show up in instance recommendations.
Unironically, I believe you could make the argument that their size is incompatible with a healthy federation network and they really shouldn't show up in recommendations.

You think it’s a good thing that new people looking to join Lemmy are directed towards Hexbear (or Lemmygrad or even ML)?

Ignoring the Grad/Hexbear stuff, didn't the ml devs found the entire lemmyverse or whatever it's called? Why should they not be allowed to be visible on a page that they're probably the maintainers of?
I bet some of these ding dongs don't even know that. It would blow their minds that the codebase is maintained by commies. I'm pretty sure there was a time people were very aware of that and even wanted to fork the codebase because "something" might happen, because of the tankies running it.
A valid concern, truthfully. Who could feel safe having communists maintaining their codebase? What if they remove all the classes?

I realised I didnt actually answer the question, I'd say75% chance that they don't think it's genocide, but if asked they'll tell you it's a really complicated situation. They'll do the Joe Rogan method of having a fully formed opinion that they can easily backpedal as being uninformed at the first sign of opposition.
