Fuck yeah, community members!

While I'm happy that people are taking action in some parts of the county, we need to see more of this happening in red and purple states. I'm not hearing much good news from those places.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 15 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

we need to see more of this happening in red and purple states

Aren’t those the states that are into things like ICE kidnappings?

[–] Psythik@lemm.ee 5 points 2 weeks ago

My point exactly. It's sad.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not all the regular people themselves.

Sure, there's a lot of fascists and fascist collaborators, otherwise they wouldn't be red or purple, but there's no such thing as a COMPLETELY red or blue state.

For example, there's more Republicans in California than there's people in several smaller states.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I mean, it still doesn’t make sense. “Red states” refers to states that voted for Republicans and hence voted for Trump policies. They’re the ones who are supporting the practices so it shouldn’t be a big surprise that they aren’t protesting those practices.

Still, almost all states have a combined majority of people who didn't vote for the fascists.

And that's not even counting all the election fraud (by officials. Contrary to the media narrative, voter fraud is extremely rare) going on in most if not all states, ESPECIALLY ones that have Republican state leadership..

According to Downey councilman Mario Trujillo, the man was working when he noticed ICE was at his job. He immediately started riding his bike toward the apartments. That's when one of the agents stopped him by grabbing one of the tires, causing him to fall to the ground.

Melyssa Rivas, who lives in the area, captured the whole thing on camera.

"It looked like a full on kidnapping scene out of a movie, it was scary," Rivas said. ""My dad has papers, he has his citizenship but he looks just like that man. He's a full citizen. They stereotyped that man."

This is heartbreaking.

It's a sad confirmation of what I always feared the USA really was.

This stain on the American brand will long outlive Trump.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 4 points 1 week ago

I use Germany (appropriately, I think) as my tool for comparison.

It took Germany generations to overcome the pariah status and national shame caused by Hitler. Granted, the U.S. hasn’t started a war or Holocaust (yet), but we’re directly supporting and encouraging one, and the mass deportations are a sort of “Holocaust lite”. Plus, I think there’s a good chance that we’ll end up attacking Iran.

It’s going to take about sixty years of continuous, uninterrupted “good behavior” for the U.S. to regain any credibility, and that’s just counting what Trump has pulled so far. Still, I don’t think the U.S. will ever be able to completely outlive this.

Yeah, bcz they're gonna start getting shot at or beaten to death with baseball bats. Is your life worth your job? This guy didnt think so, he did the right thing. Honestly, im gonna have a hard time pinning down the date of the start of the civil war when the history books are written.

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 48 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Should probably just call it No Kings Day. Poetic considering it was flag day/ 250th anniversary of the army.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Sure, we can mark no kings day next year as well, and celebrate. June 14th right? There was something else on that day, but I dont remember what for the life of me. Oh well.

[–] brygphilomena@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

It was only Del Taco and various other companies that made Oct 4 national Taco Day. I think we all can decide to move it to June 14th.

In fact, I'll declare it now.

June 14th is officially National Taco Day. Spread the word.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Done. I'll put out the word officially.

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago

And a political assassination on the same day? Yeah, that was the start of the Second American Civil War. We'll see how quickly things heat up now

[–] ssroxnak@lemmy.world 40 points 1 week ago

Stop calling these assholes ICE and federal agents. We have no idea who these people are, so stop pretending.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 38 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

“Let HIM go, and we’ll let YOU go.” Seems fair.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 16 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No one seems to have said that. Would be cool if it were true.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 6 points 2 weeks ago

If it was a quote, I would have used the quote feature, like this:

People began shouting for the agents to leave him alone and told the man not to sign anything.

Sorry for the confusion.

[–] raltoid@lemmy.world 34 points 1 week ago

That is terrible journalism... Correction:

Masked kidnappers stopped by local community.

Unidentified masked men tried kidnapping a man in Downey. They fled the scene after local community members intervened.

[–] Linktank@lemmy.today 29 points 2 weeks ago

Doxx these cunts.

I hate video players on news websites so much.

screenshot of error message in ABC 7's garbage video player

Seriously, why even have them when they never fucking work!? This has been a problem for over a decade and a half now!

Edit: Thankfully I found a YouTube Mirror

What does that have to do with anything? Terrorists hijacked a plane 14 years ago and now we’re here.

The terrorists today are domestic, running around in tacticool gear and working for our government.

[–] Rooskie91@discuss.online 32 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

United Flight 93 was the plane that crashed in a field in Pennsylvania on 9/11. It was headed for some important federal building in Washington DC, but was detoured to the ground directly below it because of the intrepid actions of the plane's passengers and flight crew. They sacrificed their lives to prevent a (potentially) greater tragedy.

I think the connection op is making is that collective action and bravery can, even in the 11th hour, prevent a larger disaster.

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ah, gotcha. Weirdly vague comment, but in that case, I agree.

[–] subignition@fedia.io 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's not weirdly vague, you just didn't know what they were talking about and didn't look into it in enough detail to understand.

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago

You know what? That’s entirely fair.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

It was headed for some important federal building in Washington DC

The US Capitol building (i.e. Congress), IIRC.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 29 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Some other people gave more context, and maybe I should have, too.

Used to be, if a plane got hijacked, the passengers were compliant and waited for it to be over. United 93 changed that forever.

The same thing seems to be happening with regard to regular citizens and ICE raiders, and I'm here for it.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 14 points 2 weeks ago

Used to be, if a plane got hijacked, the passengers were compliant and waited for it to be over. United 93 changed that forever.

For a little more context, it was because the hijackers were holding it hostage until some demand was met, or they were flying it to Cuba or wherever, and then the plane and passengers would be released. On 9/11, they turned the planes into missiles with innocent passengers aboard, and they were all expected to die. When the passengers realized this, they took action.

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

The same thing seems to be happening with regard to regular citizens and ICE raiders, and I'm here for it.

Agreed, I love to see it.

I’ma homebody and live in bumfuck where thankfully almost nothing ever happens, but I’ve signed up for an action newsletter for news and information on how I can help, and I do my part to donate locally to my food bank and other things I care about. Dunno that it helps with the current state of things, but it’s something. Hopefully more opportunities to help in the future as I hate this draconian shit going down.

Apologies for misunderstanding your comment, that’s on me.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Apologies for misunderstanding your comment, that’s on me.

You weren't the only one. Your comment and the other guy's subsequent explanation helped me, too.

[–] borf@lemmynsfw.com 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

The good ordinary people on board flight 93 heroically prevented the terrorists from causing even more destruction by banding together to fight them at the cost of their own lives

When we stand up together we can stop atrocities from happening. But we have to stand up and we can't wait and see.

They’re loving kidnapping people in CA because open carry is illegal. Imagine trying to kidnap somebody from an unmarked car with a mask on in Texas or some other open carry state?

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Downey rules. And I'm not just saying that because of Porto's (but also kinda yeah).
