I haven't seen anyone here post about this yet, but some online leftists picked up on a little piece of AOC's history that has gone under everyone's radar until recently; after her graduation in 2011 but before her ascendency to Congress in 2018, she used to work for a venture capitalist firm called GAGEis (also known as Gage Strategies) owned by 2 Israeli-Americans where she actively engaged in and promoted entrepreneurial activities.

While under this tutelage, she also founded HER OWN ENTERPRISE called the Brook Avenue Press, which according to AOC's biography in Boston University that is still publicly available, is "a social enterprise dedicated to providing relevant educational products to children and parents in urban areas.”. I'll let you guys decide what the "educational products" entails.

The Times of Israel actually wrote an article about this back in 2020 as well.

Neither of these career positions are mentioned in AOC's official biography in the US House of Representatives website.

Let this be the final nail in the coffin for AOC's "leftist" veneer, and a lesson to all of you here that any Democrat that ever tries to pose as a "Democratic Socialist", that fights for the working people, should be viewed with EXTREME scepticism and not the naive optimism that many on this site and its predecessor subreddit have perpetuated for years. Zohran Mamdani included.

I'm drawing a blank here, and from what I can tell that article doesn't go into further detail.

It was an open-ended statement (not that I was hinting at the answer) as I can't really find specifics myself, but according to this old video recording of AOC herself promoting her enterprise, it was to "try to find designers, artists, authors that really know the 'urban story' and help develop stories for kids.". No idea what "urban stories" means as AOC doesn't elaborate herself, but if I had to guess was probably liberal capitalist-friendly fictional material repackaged for children. I should also note this enterprise ceased to exist a long time ago which, alongside her official biography scrubbing her entire entrepreneurial stint, is why it's so hard to find info about it.

Regardless, this basically bursts the idea that she was some bartender/ waitress working class girl who decided to get involved in grassroots demsoc movements and instead was 100% wanting to get into entrepreneurship (with Israeli dual-national capitalists no less) before vying for political power.

chicanery

I am not fascist! I know they swapped those voting records! I knew it was a NO vote. One after October 7th. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just – I just couldn't prove it. They – they covered their tracks, they got those idiots at twitter to lie for them. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? They've done worse. That election! Are you telling me that Trump just happens to win like that? No! They orchestrated it! Tankies! They defended a terrorist group! And I saved them! And I shouldn't have. I took them into my own campaign! What was I thinking? They'll never change. They'll never change! Ever since they were literate, always the same! Couldn't keep their hands out of the palestine movement! But not our tankies! Couldn't be precious tankies! Stealing them blind! And They get to be a movement!? What a sick joke! I should've stopped them when I had the chance! And you – you have to stop him! You-

My record on Epstein speaks for itself. I'm proud of it, very proud. One of the strongest presidents! I throw down for anti-cabal candidates—largely unrecognized work. That's fine! Disagreements are fine too! But if you want to toss all that for 1 half assed Clinton stunt, BE MY GUEST! I know where I stand! trump-anguish

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

She’s at the stage where she takes her position so personally that she forgets she is representing her critics too.

The thing I hate most of these social media posts by politicians is that they never reply to any of the comments unless they had previously arranged someone to comment

Once again, the supposedly "good guys and girls" of the American empire are showing they are all 100% in accord with all the rest and any negotiation is impossible.

[–] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 71 points 1 day ago (2 children)

AOC about to be dropping “tankie” and explaining why “the left” must embrace rationality and the center soon.

The whole debacle shows how she just doesn't have the juice for this. She voted against the amendment to remove Israeli military funding, essentially saying that funding should stay in the bill. Then she votes against the bill writ-large, essentially voting against the funding she voted to keep. She wants to play this 9-D chess and is then shocked when people are, in her mind, easily misinformed or misled by bad actors. Doesn't inspire confidence even from a politicsball perspective, let alone a leftist one.

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 65 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

She has surrounded herself the consultant class that keeps the democrats a party of professional losers.

I suspect because she was such an early (and young) hail-mary win that she found herself in the capitol with literally no socialist institution to advise or staff her office. So she filled out other office with a bunch office with the wokest progressive consultants that were flocking to her. From there you get crying photo-ops at ICE facilities and this sort of dumbass triangulation.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago (9 children)

It's right because I think there is a legitimate issue of socialists (including/primarily democratic socialists) winning power, but not having the skills to govern. Liberals campaign and sometimes win on "having experience". It's true that they know what they need to do to keep the government functioning, but they are nonetheless very experienced at running the government under liberal principles.

It is good, actually to run for and win municipal and local seats because you learn a lot. Ideally you aren't the only socialist in the building though, so you can build out some footholds and mentor incoming comrades. It doesn't make a revolution, but it means that "after the revolution" there will be somebody who knows the basics of what's what.

It shows that she's either really bad at feeling out where the wind is blowing, or is overestimating her capacity to change public sentiment against genocide.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 40 points 1 day ago (8 children)

Good to see that she's borrowing from Israel's playbook and calling everyone opposed to genocide "nazis." I'm sure there'll be 0 blowback from watering down terms like "nazi" and "anti-Semite" this much.

besides that shes literally saying she wishes to supply the iron dome which is not only technically military funding but also military funding as the layperson would understand it there is a very simple concept that in doing so you are enabling the genocide by providing material aid to israel which puts them in a better strategic position to carry out the genocide jfc

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 50 points 1 day ago

How long till she social-democracy posts next to a mass grave?

[–] ProgAimerGirl@hexbear.net 55 points 1 day ago

step one: misrepresent people dragging you for not voting for a reduction in defense spending for israel, saying they are lying by claiming you "voted for military funding" a thing they did not claim you did

step two: "attach receipts" as proof that you didn't do the thing that they didn't say you did. coincidentally, this proof (your nay vote on the mtg amendment) is the thing you are being dragged for. neat trick!

step three: call 'somebody' a neo-nazi. it isn't clear who. mtg? your critics? the left? people in the comments will ask

end result: twenty feet deeper into the weeds

She should just stop, this shit is embarrassing.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

so the whole bill including iron dome was bad, but excluding iron dome from bad bill is also bad, therefore pure iron dome is good? negation

This is some John Kerry "actually I voted for it before I voted against it" shit

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 45 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is she claiming she voted no for MTGs amendment to the DoD budget but also voted no to the budget as a whole?

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 58 points 1 day ago (1 children)

She's just obfuscating the criticism by defending against a weaker argument. Some people may have been implying that she voted yes on the bill as a whole, but she voted no. This is burying the lede that she voted no on the amendment that would've stopped Iron Dome funding.

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 45 points 1 day ago

I honestly think she was too scared to vote with MTG on anything meaning she cares more about her personal image than Palestine. The amendment was clearly a protest vote and she didn't show up when Tlaib and Omar did. Voting against the DoD budget as a whole is basically a protest vote.
