It's not about protecting children. It's about "protecting everyone from God's wrath", as the people told me within those circles just when I left, but they still trusted me enough to have a "birds and the bees" talk with me (context: they think regular citizens are like prepubescent children, and need to be lied to in the sake of their well being).

Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
Was... This in the UK?
No shit, undiagnosed severe learning disability is very prominent in conservative circles.
It was never about children accessing content, it was about tying an identity to everything remotely adult related.
Next they'll ban kids from viewing LGBT content for "safety and morality"
Many places like itch.io blanket tag LGBT under NSFW, so it's already affected. Despite sexuality, existence and personality not being taboo
Give me a source on itch doing that please. It's not something I've seen despite claims
They already are. Fucking Christian scumbags
Not really. Its a censorship campaing in preparation for war. First they will say its to save the kids, then freedom, then democracy, and when people come to understand whats happening it will be already too late
It's no coincidence that this is happening just as millions in Gaza starve to death
Im of two minds about this: on the one hand, I am absolutely against this internet ID verification thing, but on the other, if you have some widespread social problem, saying "the solution to this problem is for everyone to stop doing X" never works, because if people were going to just do that, they would have done so already. Its a bit like saying "the solution to child neglect is for parents to not neglect their children". Technically true, but not actually a solution because it doesnt actually propose anything, it just assigns blame and then expects that other people will just magically be inclined to behave differently.
I just dont think that kids accidentally finding porn is nearly as significant of a problem as people think it is. Theres the notion that kids will get unrealistic and possibly unsafe ideas over what is sexual stuff is actually like if their initial exposure is finding some exaggerated fantasy, and thats a valid point, but I think the much more obvious solution, that the government has a much bigger control over, is comprehensive sex-ed that explains what the reality of the situation is and what ideas are in fact common misconceptions, instead of just trying to keep a significant aspect of human biology with profound health and social implications a secret from everyone during their formative years.
Very well said! I feel like these kinds of nuances should be brought up more (at least on the internet)
What societal problem is an ID law addressing?
It isn't. It's about isolating young people and tracking everyone else
I dont think it does address one, but the people that campaign for such things seem to think that the ability for children to find adult content is one addressed by such a law.
Hear hear! I couldn't have put it better myself.
we could make parents actually parent their children
No, you couldn't, nor could anyone else including your government. If someone had figured out a practical way to just "make" parents into better parents, we would've done that by now, for all sorts of reasons (education, crime, ...).
We used to not expect this much of parents. Children used to be raised by the community (it takes a village to raise a child). They still are in lots of villages around the world. What’s unnatural is the nuclear family and the idea that 2 parents spend all their waking hours split between working and parenting.
Parents are the ones watching porns!
We're on the second generation that grew up with easy access to Internet porn. How about we admit this is how things work, and it doesn't turn kids into serial killers or whatever?
Teach them about it. What they see in porn is not how people have sex for real (and be specific!). Consent should be followed. Don't post revenge porn, and avoid watching it. Here's how to look for porn that emphasizes consent on set. The performers are real people with real lives beyond sex, and they deserve a basic level of respect as human beings. And so on.
That goes against the control freaks wanting to limit our sources of pleasure to ways they can comfortably exploit.
This is what it's about. They groom you to feel shameful and sell themselves as the only solution to the problem they created in you
I honestly don’t care if little Timmy touches himself. I’m concerned if 50 year old pastor Tommy touches Timmy but short of that, I could give a damn. I think it’s super creepy to insert adults into a minors self-sex life.
I'd prefer "involve"
Should we do something against
- climate desaster
- demographic change/pension collapse
- growing wealth gap
- mass extinction
- housing crisis
Or pornography?
The porn industry feeds on poverty. Meanwhile the same UK politicians are busy making everybody poorer
I think the meme got the conversation backwards. It started with "How can we track people on-line and take away encryption?"
One reason I think this whole thing is stupid, when saying it's 'for the children', is because I don't think the old folks responsible for this remember what it's like as a young person.
This won't protect anything. When I was a teenager I'm pretty sure I got turned on by a dot matrix style 3x6 black and green screen, showing large dots of what was meant to be Pamela Anderson.
Hell, I'm almost certain we all knew someone in school who would probably have gotten off at two balloons caught in a mop.
Just seems more like a way to make judgement on Adults.
Eh I take issue with this meme. It implies that people, even kids, who seek out porn were (or are being) raised poorly and I cannot agree with that.
I think that it really says that the parents themselves should stop their children from watching porn instead of getting the government to do it for them.
and that's a false assumption as well that only exists because of puritans
Every time we got a new inverter provider I was on the admin section of the router options to tinker with the settings so the kids wouldn't and couldn't get to (at least the most obvious) of dodgy websites.
They also had a strict schedule of when they could use the internet AND I set up a logger so I could go through the websites that they visited. And it would flag up anything untoward.
Ok, I'm tech savvy and not everyone could do this straight away. However, if you really want to parent your child you would either learn to do it or ask someone to help.
That's just abuse, leave your kids at least some privacy.
This option is available through every major internet providers app in the UK. Few people utilise it.
Not to endorse Windows but you can setup parental controls and monitoring online
You know, I wonder if unironically less people will move to the UK because of their internet restrictions
No. People will leave the UK because of their internet restrictions
Source : Me. I did it.
Wow, congrats!
Good on ya, and this sounds like a "por que no los dos" moment.
It's def a con added to the list. Ireland is way better next door.
Pretty sure they ensured that by leaving the ey
Ayyy
Internet id laws are fucking stupid but making parents do a good job has historically worked super well. Also parents are abusers the overwhelming majority of the time, depending on source 75-83% of child abuse is perpetuated by parents (physical/neglect). Depending on how you define things sexual abuse is perpetuated by parents or a close family member roughly 1/3rd of the time and up to as much as 80% of the time
How do you “make” parents do a good job? There are things we can do that increase the likelihood that bad parents get caught (sex education, teaching kids proper anatomy, lgbt education, etc) but those things are controversial because of the shitheads demanding id laws.
Parent training is something you can do I suppose but how do you handle this? What is the proper curriculum? What is the consequence if the parents don’t take it seriously? How do you determine if the parents aren’t taking it seriously vs they have their own systemic issues (poor education, lack of resources, etc)? The state isn’t going to help them with money or education, at least not currently
Welcome to western pediatric mental health treatment in 2025. Political barriers everywhere before you can even start to talk about “evidence based approaches” and that discussion can’t even begin because everyone is stupid now and wants the answer to be an easy sentence long solution. “Make the parents do it”, “increase mental health funding”, “stop bullying” and other nonsense platitudes that are meaningless without pages and pages of actionable steps behind them.
I remember when we wanted a war against ban rock music, comic books, and "violent" video games.
shakes fist I remember when they tried to pass off a race riot as "I simply dislike disco, rock is just better"
The solution is: we fucking can't and it's silly to think it's remotely possible.
