Fediverse vs Disinformation

2140 readers
130 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

AINSLEY EARHARDT (FOX HOST): So the president implemented this Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force and in less than a week they've taken 100 violent criminals off the streets. I think it's great. I wouldn't mind seeing the National Guard, especially if it's in areas where there is a lot of crime. I mean, think about Times Square. There is a lot of crime there. We cover a lot of stories there. If they had National Guard troops in Times Square it would make me feel safer.

Why are these people so fucking afraid of everything?

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 41 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Because they know that if they don't stop keeping everyone divided with lies and hate they'll be squarely under the chopping block.

[–] Neverclear@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Religious dogma that if they die in a state of sin, they'll burn in hell forever. It's a disease.

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

So the answer is then to sin as hard and fast as you can, at all times? What, are they trying to outrun God's karma counter or what?

[–] Jaeger86@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

I was thinking more mass deflection so people don't notice they're stealing everything that's not nailed down

[–] chaos@beehaw.org 2 points 9 months ago

It's in the nature of conservatives to be afraid, it's their fundamental motivating emotion. That's why they're so eager to put their tough strong daddy into office who promises to put things back to the reassuring, comfortable way they used to be.

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 2 points 9 months ago

It's a FNC host. They are rehearsed corporate propagandists. They will try out many lines to see what sticks in support of their agenda - in this case, militarized police via the NG.

Note that this general trend is bipartisan in its essence, they just use different terminology and implementations. The previous administration inflated federal funding for police and their use of "free" military equipment. You might get to enjoy this at future protests when they give you permanent hearing damage with an LRAD.

Both of these came in response to protests. It is the capitalist boot being laced to stomp on our faces. When we demand racial justice, no genocide, really anything against capital, they will do this. We have to be ready for it and not take advice from them on how to organize politically or protest.

I'm pretty sure times square has been a boring advertising friendly place for like 20+ years.

You don't go there because it's crowded (tourists and commuters) and uninteresting, not because of crime.

[–] Infinite@lemmy.zip 17 points 9 months ago (1 children)

The crime is the terrible soft pretzels being sold for like $8

[–] graymess@hexbear.net 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I was honestly offended at how bad the fucking pretzels were everywhere in NY.

[–] Wakmrow@hexbear.net 6 points 9 months ago

Philly gang

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 3 points 9 months ago

Yea I'd love to go to a crowded tourist trap where the main "attraction" is being bombarded with a seizure-inducing level of advertising

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 2 points 9 months ago

But how else will you enjoy the smell of hot piss among 500 insufferable tourists?

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 16 points 9 months ago

even pyongyang doesn't have soldiers everywhere, racist.

Your opinion of North Korean cops is clear (I don't share it).

Listen to this North Korean defector's opinion of American cops. He compares what he's seen on American news with his own experiences in his home country. He was shocked to learn that [American] police could be so violent.

It's a shame their instance federation rules means they don't see our comments

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 12 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

cat-confused I thought it was either two way or no way.

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Nope, Piefed has Hexbear and Lemmygrad auto-banned on DB init: https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/src/commit/f3e863d277932b55a15b1fe5043d750994fb8c14/app/cli.py#L116 Somehow it's broken, and as a result, their comments still federate to the instance, whereas ours do not.

            banned_instances = ['anonib.al', 'lemmygrad.ml', 'gab.com', 'rqd2.net', 'exploding-heads.com',

Are all the others porn instances?

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 5 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Some of those are far-right (exploding-heads, gab, poa.st, etc.)

[–] EstraDoll@hexbear.net 9 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

see my posts, you cowards frog-no-pretext

[–] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 1 points 9 months ago

The US is a fascist country. I wish I did live in the DPRK

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 12 points 9 months ago

keep a list of everything said on stations like this. it’s all collaborative and meant to manufacture consent for more fascism. checkpoints. papers please. etc.

related reminder: you do NOT need to stop for unmarked vehicles trying to pull you over. call 911, report the attempted kidnapping. caveat: outcomes may vary based on skin color. :(

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Tuesday's arrests included: one arrested on suspected homicide, seven related to narcotics charges, 33 for alleged firearm offenses, 10 related to warrants, as well as the arrests of 23 illegal immigrants. Law enforcement recovered a total of 24 firearms on Tuesday, according to the White House.

I’d love to see what the rest of the week looked like. They must have arrested 99 violent criminals on the other days of the week.

You should know that the moment Ainsley Earhardt makes a dispariging comment against the system, she is headed straight to Room 101

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago

Times Square? The most aggressive crime I know of there are overly aggressive costumed characters and those are easy to avoid. Have they not been to Times Square since the 1980s when it was full of porn theaters?

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

I bring my rocket launcher to the M&Ms store. As a precaution.

[–] AlexLost@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Why do we care about feelings now?! The fuck is this world and why are we letting them get away with this shit. Bunch of fucking drivel spewing out of the mouths of broken horses.

[–] BierSoggyBeard@feddit.online 2 points 9 months ago

If the national guard would remove all the seditionist treasonists from Fox, I would feel much safer

[–] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 1 points 9 months ago

I have never felt safer anywhere then when I've vusited New York lol

[–] Luffy879@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago

Just saying, that's like 1:1 to what they did during furgeson. Remember those, you fuckhead Dixon?
