i mean, yeah, unironically, maldela's legacy, his work with the ANC and what the ANC precisely did has been largely scrubbed from liberal retellings of history because if libs knew they would all be on the apartheid government's side

During the lifetime of great revolutionaries, the oppressing classes constantly hounded them, received their theories with the most savage malice, the most furious hatred and the most unscrupulous campaigns of lies and slander. After their death, attempts are made to convert them into harmless icons, to canonize them, so to say, and to hallow their names to a certain extent for the “consolation” of the oppressed classes and with the object of duping the latter, while at the same time robbing the revolutionary theory of its substance, blunting its revolutionary edge and vulgarizing it.

The libs who canonize him now would've called him a terrorist 35 years ago.

what are the things that liberal retellings scrubbed?

He was the founder and one of the leaders of the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC), also known as uMkhonto weSizwe (MK). They mainly did things like sabotage government buildings by destroying electrical substations, or detonating car bombs to kill government security/military. They would also burn down farms. They absolutely killed people and Nelon Mandela was personally part of the planning and execution.

They did this as part of an ultimatum against the South African government to end apartheid through constitutional amendment or the campaign of sabotage would continue. Mandela was a hero and should be remembered and venerated as such.

Do they think he was in prison for all those years for writing to his representative?

Already done it.

MP Alex Davis Jones went on national morning television to defend the government arresting 500+ mostly pacifists and pensioners on terror charges for a protest against proscribing Palestine Action, where she compares them to the IRA and other 'terror groups'.

Her previous claim to fame, she had two of her constituents raided by police in the middle of the night and charged for writing letters demanding action on Palestine.

Someone on here got knocked on the door by the police in Ingerland because they wrote their representative something mean

[–] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 10 points 9 months ago

I saw that. I don't believe those were the same incidents. I've heard of others though that didn't get the same press

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 8 points 9 months ago

compares them to the IRA and other 'terror groups'.

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 2 points 9 months ago

OK, point taken. These days, it would make sense to think he got arrested for that.

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 31 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Most likely, yes, or possibly for making speeches. Liberals prefer to try to deduce events rather than look up what actually happened.

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 1 points 9 months ago

"Deduction" is a very generous term here. It's more like "I think non-violence is good. I think this guy is good. Therefore, this guy is nonviolent."

[–] miz@hexbear.net 60 points 9 months ago

Nelson Mandela was on the US terror list until iirc 2008

I hate smug empty redditsms so goddamn much! "Erm wow, says a lot" what the fuck does it say you spineless witless fuck, say what you fucking mean, I know it's gonna be some shit about savages along with the smug Churchillian implication that they deserve it, but even that nazi fuck Churchill could say what he meant

What am I drawing from behind my waistband? Wow, really? Heh, don't worry about it sweaty. You sweet summer child. The fact that you haven't already guessed says everything we need to know.

[–] OldSoulHippie@hexbear.net 32 points 9 months ago (2 children)

So wait. Is killing bad again?

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 33 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Killing for humanity bad, killing for profit anywhere from good😁 to sadly maturely necessary 😓

[–] 666PeaceKeepaGirl@hexbear.net 9 points 9 months ago

These people heard the "one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic" quote and took it as a moral instruction to kill in batches of 1 million

[–] AntiOutsideAktion@hexbear.net 16 points 9 months ago

Oh is that why we were waiting to unite behind the Palestinian cause? We needed them to produce a great man?

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 16 points 9 months ago

So their greatest own is how their enemies are just like them? It’s sad they lack the self-awareness to know how they just condemned themselves.

[–] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 14 points 9 months ago

Westerner's ideas about Nelson Mandela are so warped. They view him as a MLK Jr. kind of figure (and even your average gringo doesn't understand MLK very well), who was just a nice, peace-loving guy who peacefully peace'd his way to ending apartheid.

Y'all, the anti-Apartheid resistance was full of violence! Look up 'necklacing' sometime. That shit isn't pretty, and we can talk about whether it was "effective" or what that means. But it was still a part of that struggle, and that's just how it is. You have to take the entire thing, as it is, and not cherry pick the parts that sound cuddly and nice.

Palestine is no different. Western libs, please be normal and introspective challenge, Status: impossible.

Yahya Sinwar is closer to Mandela than this guy. Surely liberals love Sinwar, right?

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 7 points 9 months ago
