It's getting old.

I get the feeling a lot of people mistake being a joyless bully for maturity.

(incoming rambling)

I’ve been talking with my friends recently about how oppressively negative a lot of things feel and this is definitely one of the major factors. It really does feel like the default attitude on the Internet is “cynical asshole who’s negative about everything = smart” and “caring about anything is stupid lol.” I used to take this sort of attitude towards things until I realized that I was bad at describing what I genuinely like because I was so caught up in this act of looking like the smart rational cynic and worrying about people looking at me weird because I liked a certain thing. I let all the cringe culture and the “if you like (insert thing) you’re a cringe virgin” memes get to me (I was a teenager ok). I think some people would benefit from asking themselves “What do I love?” and answering earnestly because maybe it’ll make people reflect on how much time they spend tearing down other things and people vs. how much time they spend being genuine and not hateful

I used to work with an unironic asmongold fan a few years older than me (mid-late 30s). We spent 10-14 hour days alone in the woods together so we talked a bunch. Mostly I would just egg him on while he talked about nonsense conspiracies but the way he talked about literally everything in his life (except for legos) was just so sad. Bro you can like things it’s ok. Just because you can identify a flaw doesn’t mean it’s irredeemable.

One day he dumped all his stuff on his desk and disappeared; we never heard from him again. I would say I hope he’s doing well but he was crusty, dumb, and hateful. Sorry to repeat myself, I already said he was an unironic asmongold fan.

And then you return the favor right back to any of these douchebags and suddenly you’re the bad guy.

It's like these post-modern revolutionary types who want to use maximum cruelty to overthrow the evil goberment, but have no clue what is to be done after, because nobody made V for Vendetta part 2 for them.

Talk about a half measure. waltuh

There were some good points near the start of this but somewhere in the middle I just had to stop reading because it became harder than a poem to read. We can't be attacking the ruling class or "Prince" William for their pretentious dickery while talking in the most unreadable and alienating way possible, it makes it hard to tell whether we're the pretentious snobs or the literal monarch is.

Oooh the author of Perdido Street Station! Nice!

That is how society has worked so oddly, this is a prosocial drive. People know they are supposed to like it, and we can see how the cognitive dissonance of it all hurts people

Our world is a grim place and most people live and die in dip shit. Are you sure you can distinguish between "joyless bully" and "realism"?

Yes, joyless bullies enjoy that the world is shit and actively seek to worsen it by harming others. Realists hate that the world is shit and seek to forge connections with others in order to cope and maybe improve it.

The Lemmy Bot (I mean come on it's in its name) does not appear to have any response to this. Probably because it wasn't programmed to respond to arguments.

Yeah no shit the world sucks. But there's a point where you have to decide not to contribute to making it more shit by needlessly hurting people who are just trying to survive like you.

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 22 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Yes, just because the world sucks doesn't mean it's good to wallow in it and lash out at others.

[Incoming rant]

It's also love it that when I make a post like this at least someone always assumes I'm some starry eyed idealist that doesn't live in the horrors of the real world.

Meanwhile I've been through shit so vile I probably couldn't talk about it here without censoring half of it. God forbid I think "hmm maybe people shouldn't be needlessly cruel."

doomer Be kind to your fellow human beings.

smuglord Umm, someday you'll learn and realize that the world is harsh.

Yeah, the default assumption people seem to have (that it's not possible to see that things are bad and still be kind) is aggravating.

lemmitor ”The way things are now must be the natural way of things. Marx failed to consider human nature. No, I haven’t read him, but I know he didn’t.”

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

“Muh human nature!”

Being a slave to your instincts is animalistic and nothing to be proud of.

There is nothing wrong with being an animal, because that is what we are.

[–] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

I don't want to be this kind of animal anymore.
