Saw a guy with some shit on his forearm the other day, wondering the chances of him being a fan of a really shitty vegan painter.

Don't hang out with the runes guy, but also unless there's other context I wouldn't come to any conclusions based on this.

For example, I knew a guy who had some runes tattooed but it was actually just the owl symbol from Twin Peaks. He's a communist. Granted, you could probably tell as much because he also had a hammer and sickle on the other forearm, but you know, you can never be sure.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago

I have warned many a Twin Peaks fan about that

Less often than you'd think. Also, there's lots of symbols that like vaguely rune-like, but actually aren't, like celtic symbols and such. They might just be Irish.

Also, a lot of the Nazi runes aren't real runes, they invented a bunch of runes in the 1930's. Genuine Nordic runes might not have that same Nazi association.

Any resources if made up Nazi runes and how to spot them? I know different Nazi logos well enough to spot them - saw a guy at a local gun shop with those three intertwined triangles on his hand that were very distinct from similar Celtic symbols.

A pretty good indicator is if they also wear things like kilts or are big participants in Nordic Festivals. Some of the most 'gender-fluidity and pansexuality are a part of our heritage' people are Midwest Nordic enjoyers.

Not as many as you think. Runes are cool looking. Thinking Vikings are aesthetically cool is by no means a Nazi phenomena. I wouldn't worry about it unless there are some other indicators.

If someone has tons of tattoos and a couple of runes, I'll guess they're aesthetic until some other indication arises. If it's mostly just runes (even if it's like their only one), I've had like a 90% success rate in assuming they're horrible. But to be fair, like 70% of everyone in every place I've lived was a POS lol

1% chance you're dealing with an unfortunate Harry Potter fan

there are some OK people who can't let go of Hatsune Miku's Harry Potter but i'd rather take my chances with a disney adult.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

Yeah, I wasn’t being entirely serious anyway.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Ah yes, Harry Potterism is social fascism.

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

bit idea: deathly hallows sigil but with the wand split in two and attached to the bottom two intersecting points of the other two

so it would look somewhat like

anarchy-a-white

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The fact that Harry didn't break the wand and instead buried it like a sentimental asshole really sums up his weakness as a character.

[–] 30_to_50_Feral_PAWGs@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

I heard that at the end of the TV remake, the neighbors are going to see him burying the wand and ask him his name, and he's going to reply, "Harry. Harry... Skywalker."

Rune tattoos are one of those things where it really depends on a few factors, like which rune it is, if they have other borderline tattoos, or anything else about them. In general if I see a dude with rune tats it's enough to make me pay more attention to anything they say/do as other indicators.

[–] catter@hexbear.net 12 points 3 months ago

I can't speak to how many may be Nazis, but I personally would never get a rune tattoo because of the association. It wouldn't be enough for me to assume they were a Nazi unless there were other yellow flags.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

That depends on where the guy is from. If he's from a Nordic country you can't really conclude anything from a rune tattoo alone. Nazis love Viking shit but so does a lot of other people, it's no more sus than a Greek guy being into columns.

It becomes a lot more sus if the guy is not from the Nordics.

Rune tattoos are actually on my list…

Tap for spoilermy favorite runewords from Diablo II: LoD, anyway

[–] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Sounds neat, no shade... So survey of one -are you a Nazi?

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Absolutely not, just a nerd who has loved Diablo II since 1999.

[–] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

Good to hear, so far my survey has me feeling more at ease!

Mmmm CoH… Enigma was top on my list but then the remaster came out and I felt embarrassed because it went from a deep pull to something a bunch of other folks already did, so I haven’t committed to anything yet.

[–] Thordros@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Chains of Honor is a personal fave since it's so widely applicable. Just pop it on a shirt and it's a rock solid chest for any class until you get your BiS.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

I always wanted Fury on one arm and Chaos on the other for my assassin.

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

might just be a huge runescape enjoyer

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

80% an unknown portion of that 80 percent is like nazi in the way of the average American. Where they would be perfectly fine with nazis shit so long as it is called old fashioned american values.

Unfortunately the actual nazi guys and the folk punk guys overlap a suprising ammount. So the guy offering you mushroom tea out of a deer skull probably has takes worse than you can imagine.

[–] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Prolly gets his takes from contracting a mammalian prions disease from drinking out that skull.

When someone you know gets really into German runes (or really any kind of runes at all) get them out of your life.
