BREAKING: In response to the brutal NYPD shooting of their son and brother, 22-year-old Jabez Chakraborty on Monday, January 26th, the Chakraborty family issued the following statement:

We are shocked and outraged by the NYPD’s treatment of our son and brother, Jabez Chakraborty, and our family. We called for help. We called 911 for an ambulance to provide medical attention for our son, who was in emotional distress. We did not call the police. Instead of medical responders, the NYPD arrived and shot our son multiple times right in front of us. As our son was being shot, we were terrified that what happened to Win Rozario was going to happen to Jabez.

After shooting our son, the NYPD demanded we give them our phones and passwords, threatening us to comply. While our son lay shot on the floor, the NYPD acted like ICE, interrogating us on what country we were from, when we last visited, and whether our daughter was born here.

We were not allowed to go to the hospital with our son but instead forced to the precinct, where NYPD officers interrogated and detained us. The NYPD treated us cruelly when we didn’t even know if our son was alive.

When the NYPD finally allowed us to leave the precinct, we rushed to the hospital where we learned that our son was in critical condition. Still, the NYPD did not allow us to see him. The next morning, we were again forced to go to the 107 precinct to get a 24-hour pass just to see our son after officers gave us the runaround under the guise of “hospital policy.” We only got our phones and were allowed visitation to see our son without hassle thanks to the help of Desis Rising Up & Moving (DRUM) and the Public Advocate’s office.

After all this, we saw Mayor Mamdani’s statement applauding the NYPD officers that shot our son, threatened and lied to us, and kept us from seeing our son for over 24 hours. Why is the Mayor applauding officers who recklessly almost killed our son in front of us?

We are demanding that the Queens DA not press charges against our son. We demand to know, why did the NYPD come when we asked for an ambulance? Why is the NYPD posted outside of our son's hospital room while he is on a ventilator? Why did the NYPD take our phones through manipulation and without cause? Why have we been dehumanized, disrespected, and treated like criminals all while the NYPD were the ones who came and shot our son as if they came expressly to kill him?

officer-involved shooting

He literally did the thing picard

[–] hollowmines@hexbear.net 42 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I get that he can't really be out there saying "fuck the police" unless he wants a bullet to the head, but there's gotta be lots of better options than this mealymouthed bullshit. "the cops shot someone, I am aware of the situation and will speak to the family, the shooting will be investigated" or words to that effect would have at least been not openly insulting. "officer-involved" fuck outta here with that

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 36 points 3 days ago

The fucking Associated Press says that “officer involved shooting” is passive language that should be avoided, and he couldn’t even meet that bar

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

he can't really be out there saying "fuck the police" unless he wants a bullet to the head

Shit leftist politician then

[–] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 61 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Where are the posters who argued with me that this guy was different. Show yourselves cowards.

[–] ComradeChairmanKGB@lemmygrad.ml 16 points 3 days ago

They've moved onto supporting the next not yet elected lib who will definitely be the one once they get power.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I argued you should wait until he's actually in office making decisions as mayor before making judgments on his actions as mayor, an office he's been in for a month now

[–] traxex@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Had the same argument today, so many people have been jumping the gun to write him off before he’s even had a chance.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I do think this is pretty shitty and not a good indicator of him being less shitty in the future though

I was just really fucking annoyed because the same people who were posting about the propaganda machine throwing literally everything at Mamdani to see what sticks immediately starting jumping on every single thing he said or did and it's like, you know you're being lied to, why not fucking wait until he's in office before deciding he's just like AOC or Bernie

[–] traxex@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

I agree, not a good look and I hope he understands that and is still able to actually get shit done.

[–] Muinteoir_Saoirse@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago

They're busy constructing an alternate reality in which their support for him and arguments on his behalf were realpolitik manoeuvres that took into account that this was always going to happen and they never asserted earnestly that he was the US Lenin lol

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 61 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Wow, much worse than I expected (I expected bad). He could have said nothing, it would have been much better.

Unless you have investigated a problem, you will be deprived of the right to speak on it. Isn't that too harsh? Not in the least. When you have not probed into a problem, into the present facts and its past history, and know nothing of its essentials, whatever you say about it will undoubtedly be nonsense. Talking nonsense solves no problems, as everyone knows, so why is it unjust to deprive you of the right to speak? Quite a few comrades always keep their eyes shut and talk nonsense, and for a Communist that is disgraceful. How can a Communist keep his eyes shut and talk nonsense?

MF read some police stenography and thought "I have a strong grasp on what happened here, time to put out a public statement" i-love-not-thinking

People need to realize that 911 is the cops. Trigger happy piglets are more than willing to get their "I felt threatened" merit badge.

Didn't Momdonny campaign on this very thing?

https://www.thetrace.org/2026/01/zohran-mamdani-gun-violence-safety-plan/

Mamdani has vowed to significantly expand the city’s B-HEARD pilot program, which dispatches EMTs and social workers rather than police officers to mental health 911 calls. A May audit by the city’s comptroller found that while the program has expanded since its 2021 launch, it still operates with limited capacity and is unable to respond to about a third of eligible calls within its pilot area.

please tell me they’re calling him out in the comments

When he posted this, the Telltale Game style “Everyone Disliked That” popped up in the corner of his vision

Literally every reply hates this. Mostly his supporters being like “Yo what the fuck man” but there are also his haters being like “Not good enough you’re a cop hating antisemite”

Triangulating like this doesn’t appease your enemies and pisses off your supporters. There is literally no reason to do it.

well that didn't take long

Demsoc gonna demsoc. And just a day or so after the NYPD was sent to crack the heads of anti-ICE protestors. And constantly calling every little thing that happens anti-semitism, with the Israeli lobby and supporters still saying he isn't doing enough. If he bends backwards for the status quo he might just break his back.

[–] LibsEatPoop@hexbear.net 59 points 3 days ago (1 children)

fuck the police, fuck this fascist administration.

'officer-involved' im going to puke.

mamdani needs to remember where power is. its with the people, not in the halls of albany.

is he just another beto? i thought he was better? he sure campaigned like it.

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 43 points 3 days ago (1 children)

All he had to say, was "I don't like this."

It is extreemly disappointed he is on the DNC line here

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Mamdani is nothing more than a liberal wrapped up in leftist symbolism, he's as socialist as Kerensky and as class conscious as Trotsky.

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 56 points 3 days ago (1 children)

first thing he broke being principled on that he continues to be unprincipled on. let's see if he ever actually pursues the policy that the people that respond to situations like this shouldn't be cops with guns. so far, doesn't seem great. the euthanasia of the nypd does not seem on track yet.

[–] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago

I wonder if the boy visited open society foundations seminars

I get that slick social media, absolutely liberal bullshittery inside i get from eurolibs. Aside from dsa association and rhetorical dislike of entity, nothing indicates anything

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 21 points 3 days ago

Well I mean that's not gonna help the emotional distress
