Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Your honor this man is accused of selling the world in exchange for a pound of marijuana.

[–] TomMasz@piefed.social 64 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

This happened in my hometown, Rochester, NY. It has become an eternal part of local lore. You can find his mugshot everywhere.

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There sure have been a lot of posts on lemmy about Rochester recently.

Did you know it's also the current residence of the author of Mickey 7 (inspiration for the movie Mickey 17 as well as, presumably, a fairly prolific lemmy poster)? That author also grew up about an hour from where I did.

(I learned this from the "about" section in one of his books so I don't feel it's inappropriate to share.)

[–] morgenman@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I also have been surprised by all the posts esp. how dead the community is here. As a transplant I love the lore!

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There's a Rochester community?

[–] morgenman@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Three I think but this one is most active: https://lemmy.world/c/roc

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Wow, good to know. I don't live there but I'll keep an eye on them! Thank you.

that pupil dilation is bonkers tho

[–] lime@feddit.nu 58 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

apparently he got it from being punched in the eye as a kid. it was permanent.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

I actually have this same thing, one pupil is very often far more dilated than the other.

Did Karate as a kid to young adult, for a decade, been in a number of other kinds of tussles... I've actually taken more serious blows to the head than I can count.

... I am also a twink, so, there's that too, lol.

Oh. It's also the same eye, left eye, that's dilated.

... Huh.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

bowie had a lot of surgery from the hit to the face, over a couple of months. if you don't remember having that, then i think the eye thing is not your biggest issue

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Oh I didn't have surgery because I am poor and didn't / don't have good healthcare.

I've been seriously concussed and/or outright knocked out cold... well, again, more times than I can remember.

You are right though: I am now a year + into my own daily at-home PT to recover from my latest, and by far most significant wallop, so I do in fact have bigger issues at present.

It's a shame, haven't been able to get out to any Karaoke spots in a while... it's been so long.

Frank Sinatra arrested, apparently, for “seduction and adultery” (!?... I'd have guessed mob related activities, but this also tracks, I guess).

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Frank would have been at Epstein Island if he had the chance.

[–] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, the “!?” wasn't directed at Sinatra, seduction and adultery are completely in character for him, it was directed at the law making them an arrestable offence, sometimes I forget that the USA were founded by fundamentalist religious fanatics.

And here is the polar opposite - (one of) the ugliest mugshots:

Mugshots are so bizarre to me. It's a modern form of the mediaeval public shaming bloc..

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

On the other hand, a legal obligation to collect and publish mugshots on intake prevents people from getting disappeared.

Though that's still a concern in the US these days, when ICE is able to just kidnap people off the streets and ship them wherever with no due process.

[–] Cybersec@piefed.social 6 points 3 weeks ago

Wow I never thought of that reason, thank you for the insight.

[–] Thorry@feddit.org 7 points 3 weeks ago

It is actually illegal to publish the name, face or any identifying information about suspects in some countries. Just because you are suspected of a crime, doesn't mean you've lost your right to privacy. And it only helps to further public outrage and mob justice. The media can tell their stories just fine without naming or showing the people who are suspected of doing so.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

mediaeval public shaming bloc..

The word you're looking for is "pillory."

I probably have been playing too much Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

[–] pirc_lover@feddit.uk 1 points 3 weeks ago

I can see the rationale in their publishing after someone has been proven guilty for certain crimes.

Like, I think being able to recognise confirmed rapist Brock Allen Turner is pretty good.

The fact that mugshots stay public long after the convicted have done their time, or even if they haven't been convicted, is abhorrent.

Been seeing a lot of police brutality from RPD on instagram lately. Fuck RPD.

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 1 points 3 weeks ago

I haven't lived there for ten years but they've always been racist dipshits. Knowing what exists in the sticks, I doubt they've improved.
