EDIT: The Hill blocks links. Trying to find another source. https://thehill.com/homenews/media/5733236-gallup-stops-presidential-approval-ratings-polls/

Gallup will no longer track presidential approval ratings after more than eight decades doing so, the public opinion polling agency confirmed to The Hill on Wednesday.

The company said starting this year it would stop publishing approval and favorability ratings of individual political figures, saying in a statement it “reflects an evolution in how Gallup focuses its public research and thought leadership.”

Journalists should treat this the same way they did when musk took over Twitter and set the press email to auto-reply with a poop emoji.

Many articles included references to that, saying things like, 'we reached out to Twitter, but their response was shit'. Some fed it questions tailored to the auto-reply, so that they could report things like 'when asked their opinion about the company's chances of survival under musk, twitter's own PR dept was not optimistic, chosing to simply reply with a poop emoji.

Journalists (at least those not working for maga controlled / allied media) should take a similar approach, and characterize the new, null data as 0%, and publish statements like

'In recent poling, Gallup found no supporters for the president, suggesting his approval rating of 0%'

Or

'Our graph of Gallups poling data on presidential popularity over time shows a sharp decline to 0% approval in recent months. (After purposefully building a bot / website scraper that shows null/ undefined results as 0, making that a true statement.)

I think most paying attention don't hold much faith in polls and, for the most part, ignore them. Polls seem to exist to try to sway public opinion, not inform the public with verifiable facts. Sadly, it seems to me that most don't pay attention, they just jump right in.

Bend the knee to kiss the orange onion ring.

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 7 points 2 hours ago

Spineless twats.

[–] FanciestPants@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

Damn. Was hoping this meant they wouldn't measure approval ratings for presidents 88 years old or more, but nah, just more cowardly bullshit.

[–] heyWhatsay@slrpnk.net 29 points 11 hours ago

One more step towards dictatorship

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 19 points 10 hours ago

Would love to be a fly on the wall for the actual discussions that precipitated this announcement.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 13 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Problem solved. Approval is 1,000,000% many people are saying even higher

[–] o0evillusion0o@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

The highest of any administration. It brings tears to my eyes. (as a big strong man)

[–] _haha_oh_wow_@piefed.social 64 points 14 hours ago

Gallup is spineless and should no longer be trusted, got it!

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 33 points 13 hours ago

They’ll bring it back “by popular demand” if a dem ever gets office again

[–] Hayduke@lemmy.world 238 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Translated: We are cowards and the current president is a ridiculously fragile crybaby who can bury us all if we produce data that indicates he is polling worse than the previous president, who he claims was the worst of all time. We have no spine, no balls, no integrity, and welcome our tissue-skinned commander-in-chief into our eagerly-awaiting spread cheeks.

Seems to be a common theme nowadays.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 44 points 16 hours ago

It's also possible their owners actually like what Trump is doing and want to support him.

[–] SheepHerder@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

This could be the case, but is not reflected anywhere in this article.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 5 hours ago

Which only means that media is compromised, too.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 27 points 16 hours ago

But it isn't not reflected in the article.

[–] bufalo1973@piefed.social 36 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe it's a technical problem. Maybe they can't show negative numbers.

[–] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 8 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Incorrect. Trump's approval would be best represented with complex numbers, which gallup does not support. -50+100i perhaps?

[–] the_tab_key@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago

I am not ok with that magnitude

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 146 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

OK, so Gallup is pro-fascist and their poll numbers can't ever be trusted. Bunch of orange-ass-kissing cowards.

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 33 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Well, they did choose to remove the poll numbers when they could have chosen to doctor them instead.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 29 points 17 hours ago

I suppose thats what counts as integrity these days.

[–] CptOblivius@lemmy.world 102 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Irony ending on 88...years.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 36 points 18 hours ago

Didn’t even notice that. Damn.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 18 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 91 points 18 hours ago

You've got to be fucking kidding me.

There is huge historiographic, academic, intellectual, world history value in keeping this poll going. Its the longest running, consistently executed poll in the US. The methods have been kept largely identical throughout. It doesn't matter if its flawed in some ways. The consistency alone has value enough to keep it, and I'm sure the costs of running it are marginal.

This some bullshit.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 49 points 16 hours ago

We all know why they did this. It has nothing to do with the bullshit their trying to claim.

They did this because of trump.

[–] OldQWERTYbastard@lemmy.world 13 points 13 hours ago

Cowards. All of them.

[–] slothrop@lemmy.ca 61 points 18 hours ago

Tomorrow:

"Gallup renamed TRUMP-gallup Poll"
-- TrumpWaPo

[–] VaalaVasaVarde@sopuli.xyz 41 points 17 hours ago

Translation: They did the poll and it's so devastatingly bad that it's impossible to spin.

He must be polling several points below the previous worst result.

[–] tubthumper@lemmy.world 10 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Wtf is "thought leadership" and wtf is it doing?

"Yes yes we must discontinue gathering real thoughts from the public because the Thought we now must all Think is that Thrump is Thy Thupreme Leada and Everythink™ is Great"

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 19 points 16 hours ago

Translation:

So baby cheeto told them to stop because he doesn't want to hear that everyone hates him. Gottit

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 10 points 15 hours ago

I’ve done my own poll and it said he’s the lowest approval rate ever.

[–] in_my_honest_opinion@piefed.social 10 points 16 hours ago
[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

They are afraid of Trumps reaction to the truth.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

That or fight an eleventy-hundred billion dollar lawsuit from the demented rapist.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 15 hours ago

Fucking scum

Hello fellow dweller in gaseous environs.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 2 points 16 hours ago

Ofcourse they will, they will just not publish the data

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

"Good news, Mr. Big Strong President Sir! Your approval ratings are 100% ~of~ ~what~ ~they~ ~were~ ~yesterday.~"
