Israeli army takes Gazan doctor at a hospital, tortured him, then brought him a tablet showing a livestream of his home, called in a strike that killed his six-month-pregnant wife, and made him watch until the rescue crew pulled her body from the rubble

Genuinely an unfathomable level of evil what the fuck

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 42 points 3 days ago (2 children)

unfathomable

This is too true; I genuinely can't imagine what's going through their head that they would do something like this. I've heard a handful of stories coming out of that prison, and it's impossible to put yourself in the headspace of that kind of evil. Settler colonist mentality is monstrous, and literally unfathomable to the average person. The only other place I read of with people like this were literal nazis; I recall something Philip K Dick once mentioned of something he'd read in a nazi's diary: that the nazis in the diary were upset that they were being kept awake at night by the cries of starving Jewish children. I'm also reminded of a former nazi who was secretly interviewed who'd been serving as a mercenary in Africa who was gleefully recounting the evil they'd been committing.

I don't understand these people, I genuinely can't imagine seeing people the way they do.

I read about the Einsatzgruppen - first wave mass-murder squads that the nazis deployed as they pushed east & west, often rounding up anyone deemed undesirable in any village they came across and shooting them in a field.
This system of serial extermination was found to be inefficient, due to the fact that the goons doing it were getting traumatised by having to personally execute thousands of people. It's part of what led to the gas chambers - a method of killing removed enough from personal involvement that nobody feels (as much) guilt.
Impersonal, remote airstrikes - especially via drones - are a normalised modern day incarnation of the same idea.

Even if I were evil, I wouldn’t be this fucking evil.

When I imagine being evil, I don’t fucking come close to this.

The depravity.

This is what everyone who says “two state solution” supports.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 32 points 3 days ago

It really feels like they're trying to do a kind of "refuge in abhorrence" of their actions or something, where they do some so disgusting, so cruel, that it becomes unbelievable to people with any kind of empathy. That they can just easily dismiss their own actions as "Hamas propaganda" by saying "no one is that evil."

Of course, I don't think this would really work, since the west is constantly accusing their enemies of vague imagined evils, and even your average grillman is already primed to believe this sort of evil exists in the world, because they are asked to imagine it all the time.

It almost feels like it is part of a greater project, since a lot of western propaganda relies on "We may not be perfect, but the enemy is even worse!" having Israel normalise such deplorable acts will just be used to further normalise them at home, and the west will justify it by accusing their geopolitical enemies of still being "worse" than the most heinous and cruel shit people can do. I think they may have already hit their limit with this sort of thing though, Israel is too openly and proudly cruel and sadistic, and the only way someone can believe the western narrative about their enemies now is if they choose to be as hateful and willfully ignorant as possible, and those sorts of people never actually cared about crimes against humanity anyway, they treat it like a team sport where "their team" just needs to "win" by any means.

Yeah I can't really talk about Israel and adjacent issues in any depth with my family because they start to look at me like I've grown a second head before I've even done some basic 101 stuff. By the same turns they believe vague but darkly terrifying things about the barbaric nature of arab people. and they're about as good as 'the good ones' get as far as boomer libs.

We'll never convince them, someone just needs to do what needs to be done.

I'm reminded of something (Noam Chomsky?) once did, where he spoke at (Harvard?) and began listing atrocities (it wasn't true) committed by Arabs against Jewish people in Israel/Palestine and the people were absolutely aghast at what they heard, utterly horrified, and then....revealed that actually it was the other way around, that it was the zionists who'd committed those atrocities against the Palestinian population, and he said he noted with some interest that the room breathed a sigh of relief

[–] iByteABit@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago

This is so sickening that I really can't emotionally process it, my mind just blocks it to preserve my sanity

barbara-pit would be far too kind

Isn’t this a known torture technique? Except normally the family being tortured or killed is simulated and the tortured person is on drugs to make it feel real. They legitimately just did it for real.

I can't watch this, but what's the name of the doctor and his wife?

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 2 points 3 days ago

The man recalling the story only gives the name Dr. Khalid, he doesn't mention the man's full name or his wife's name

[–] Fossifoo@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Can you please tag this? I didn't need to read this sentence before breakfast.

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I gave it a CW and altered the title, I am sorry; someone else also indicated they weren't happy to read about this either, I should've practiced better care in this

[–] Fossifoo@hexbear.net 1 points 2 days ago

NP, in the end being abhorred by the torture tactics of the imperial core I reside in is the least of inconveniences compared to what we do to those who we profit of.
