Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Spain has accused Germany’s leader of acting like a “vassal” of the United States after he failed to defend Madrid against criticism from President Trump.

Last week, Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, sat next to Trump in the Oval Office as the American president threatened to impose a trade embargo on Spain for its refusal to adopt Nato’s updated defence spending target.

When Merz was asked to respond, instead of contradicting his US counterpart he echoed the core of Trump’s criticism and urged Spain to put more money into its military.

The German leader subsequently tried to remedy the situation by insisting that he had privately warned Trump against cutting off trade relations with Spain. This, however, has done little to appease the indignation in Madrid.

Spain has vociferously opposed the American-Israeli strikes on Iran while Merz has all but endorsed them. José Manuel Albares, the Spanish foreign minister, compared Merz unfavourably with his predecessors Olaf Scholz and Angela Merkel, and suggested that the chancellor had betrayed the original values of his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party and its revered founder, Konrad Adenauer.

“I can’t imagine Merkel or Scholz behaving like this,” Albares told the Cadena Ser radio station. “It corresponds neither to Konrad Adenauer nor to the European values on which this party [the CDU] was founded,” he said. “Now there’s a different leadership with different values.”

Yolanda Díaz, Spain’s deputy prime minister, said that Merz was one of several EU members “who have no idea how to manage this historic moment we’re living in”. She told Politico: “What Europe needs today is leadership, not vassals who pay homage to Trump.”

On Monday evening, Merz tried to patch things up by calling Pedro Sánchez, his Spanish counterpart, but it was unclear whether he got through. One report suggested he had the wrong number.

"You don't understand, colonialism and destruction of other countries in the name of god is the right thing! Not supporting the invasion on Iran is antisemitic!"

i think there is hidden popularity boost in shitting on germany, more parties should do it

[–] DasRav@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

I wouldn't call it hidden.

Spain accuses water of being 'wet', sky of being 'blue'.

As a German: Merz is an absolutely loathsome removed who hasn't had a good opinion his entire life. It is a testament to our own shitty brand of democracy that he managed to get in charge of the country, when he shouldn't be able to command wings at a KFC.

What democracy the only parties opposing gaza genocide are BSW, DKP and MLPD as far as I am aware

[–] DasRav@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It's the same brand of democracy as the US has got, but with more places to put a check mark come vote day. A distinction without a meaningful difference. That was part of my point.

ah gotcha I misread you then soz

CDU got 29% in recent BW election only getting less than one percent from greens in state elections. I expect them to win more in other states. Also AfD was third at 19%. This shit is about to be shittier

[–] DasRav@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

AfD will keep growing while we keep having the same party (with different labels) in charge. Like I said, same thing as the US, the opposition is entirely controlled and happy to factually do CDU politics forever.

Can any comrades tell me why Spain's foreign policy seems to be slightly better than many other European countries, especially of former empires? They've been more pro-palestine than most euros, and they don't seem to have slipped in to the US imperial grasp. Is it because they didn't get Marshall Planned and didnt really grow economically close to the US or something?

Their justified hatred of English tourists has pushed them slightly away from the Anglosphere.

So here is my understanding: Spain has a long history of Arabic relations with it's proximity to Morocco and north Africa. There is a shared history there, and parts of Spain have a high morrocan/Arabic population. Spain is also historically neutral re: most wars. Spain looks out for Spain, and getting involved in an unpopular war could invite domestic issues.

There are a significant portion of the population that loves the idea of the American dream.

The government and the population dont want to be dragged to war as it happened with the iraq war, we got into nato almost as a prerequisite to entering the European union, in a effort to recover our economy from the fascist period.

The funny thing about that sub is most of the users are Eastern Euros or Israeli

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

More like a collaborator calling them a vassal removed their agency.

[–] Xerxos@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's so unfair! It's completely false! Germany is a vassal state of Israel. Get your facts right!

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 47 points 1 week ago

Israel didn't blow up Nordstream, Germany just knuckles under when america or america's preferred vassal needs them to.

Their chancellor overtly saying that they will always unwaveringly support a genocidal country because of their dominant ethnicity, should have made it clear that the moral and ethnical foundations of their elites are still the same as when the were openly NAZI - that race is above all else and that the right races should be supported even in the commission of the most depraved actions.

As somebody from and living in Europe I am genuinely concerned that Germany is still deep down NAZI - if today the Jewish People are the ubermenschen and Muslims the untermenschen, tomorrow it might just be the Arian race vs the rest all over again.
