Honestly, someone like JD Vance believes what it is convenient for him to believe, and right now it is convenient for him to believe the same sort of drivel that the base dumb enough to build their authoritarian regime around believes. I don't think it was coincidence that soldiers were spouted biblical narratives preceding the latest Iran invasion, these are the sort of loyal reliable zealots whose lack of foundation in reality is actually an asset for them.
