I feel awful for young people.

Wish they could grow up in the world we did. The woods we played in are now McMansions and paved over. The malls, video stores, and pizza party places are gone or empty. Friendships were made organically and if someone wanted to fuck with you, they had to do it to your face and take some personal risk.

We were out having adventures until the street lights came on.

Worst of all though, we had hope for a prosperous future. Young people don't even get to have that now.

The reason we don't remember the bad stuff is because Power Ranger and X-men intro theme are just too good. And also Jumanji came out that decade.

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Dude the opening riff to the power rangers theme still hits so fucking hard

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

The Men In Black intro was also a banger.

When Will Smith still good.

Seems so silly I'm hindsight, but it struck a nerve at the time:

What's something that ages much worse than milk?

Smells like meat. Rotten meat! Kids, you stupid motherfuckers, why would you bring that rotten meat in here of all places?!

Three of the biggest hit films of 1999: The Matrix, Fight Club, and American Beauty. The inciting incident in all three was, "Man, life is kind of boring..."

I fucking wish that was my problem.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

I still believe that's the reason many people voted for Dubya. Gore was dependable but boring. Dubya was entertaining.

For a brief, shining moment you had Animaniacs, XMen, and The Tick all on back to back on Thursdays after school

[–] notwhoyouthink@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

Nickelodeon also hit hard in this era, same for WB and Cartoon Network

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 4 points 5 hours ago

it was great. Fox used to show blocks of shows in the morning before school so you could watch Power Rangers in the morning and then more when you got home. Also Disney had their after school cartoon block of Tale Spin, DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, etc.

and THEN here in Canada you could get like an hour of and half of Simpsons EVERY night. CBC would show Simpsons at 5, Fox at 5:30, and then another Canadian Station would show an episode at 6.

We really had it great in the 90s.

Oddly I’ve seen a lot of Animaniacs references recently.

So I downloaded an Animaniacs torrent to re-watch a bunch of stuff from the 90s that used to make me happy. Somehow it’s not as great as I remember. Or maybe I’m just old and miserable.

[–] Danarchy@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 hour ago

Like another comment mentioned, target age is a huge factor. To that I would add that Animaniacs went unexpected places with the humor in a way few cartoons (that I had access to) were doing. Tiny Toons by contrast was enjoyable enough but the humor was.. idk “safe” I guess?

Nations of the World was just tightly executed and clever, for one example. “A clown will not bite me und throw me in the basement” is something I still say from time to time, is another. Both stuck with me because I had that “wtflol” moment the first time I saw them. Real “bologna in our slacks” energy which was hilarious at age 12.

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 2 points 5 hours ago

I preferred Freakazoid. I still watch it. the humor of that show was right up my ally. I still say "Que a couple le fromage?" and "poo gas" to this day.

[–] NottaLottaOcelot@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 hours ago

My kids love Pinky and the Brain, so the target age group still seems to like them. I’d say the Looney Tunes aged fairly well from a humour perspective, although some scenes are pretty offensive in this day and age.

Like the German intro version of the Megaman TV series

I've been slowly building a backyard garden with native plants to bring back local pollinators.

I've been making my good things happen.

[–] notwhoyouthink@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

[–] dumbass@piefed.social 3 points 7 hours ago

We had a completely different childhood my man.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 2 points 8 hours ago

Sora shutting down made me go "good things still happen".
