Attribution is not advertising. Cite the artist. (Cropping out citations is just extra work anyway.)

Is beep banned from lemmy world yet?

[–] Matombo@feddit.org 4 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

sorry english is not my first language. What is the difference? Atribution and citing is both giving who made it or is it not?

[–] nickiwest@lemmy.world 5 points 7 hours ago

You are correct.

The post is pointing out the difference between attribution and advertisement.

[–] Rubisco@slrpnk.net 3 points 7 hours ago

English is my first language and you have me second guessing myself.
Citations are typically used for sources in academic papers or Wikipedia.
Quotes often get misattributed to various incorrect historical figures.
Accreditation is probably the word I should have used, but attribution is what I was seeing in comments the most.
Also, to me accreditation sounds like something a university or a mortgage bond would seek, not so much an artist, but honestly I don't know for sure.

Ramble aside, yes, they essentially mean the same thing.

It pisses me off so much when I go to the art museum and see a cool piece that the artist RUINED by putting an advertisement in the bottom corner.

And then the museum has the audacity to put another plaque with an advertisement next to it, too! The nerve on these people.

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 10 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I mean I can't wait for the paintings in 100 years to be AI generated with the person who wrote the prompt having their snap chat qr Code or tiktok handle in the corner.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 11 hours ago

It better be a dancing qr code with their handle that changes places between the 4 corners every second, too

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 20 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

they want you to buy stuff at the store. it's all an ad

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 43 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Someone shook my hand and introduced themselves when I first met them. The gall they had to advertise themselves to me like that!

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 11 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Fuck those cunts, so rude, you just want human connection instead of people trying to make you learn brands (their name) and form brand loyalty (friendship). But if you are interested, I sell Aramaic demonic succubi traps on etsy.

not sure if it is funnier if its for real but here's the linkhttps://www.etsy.com/listing/4455150745/lilith-bowl

Buying a copy of the Mona Lisa from the gift shop is a lot cheaper than buying the actual Mona Lisa. 😌

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 8 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

I prefer the Moona Lisa

I went to the Guggenheim and bought nothing from the gift shop, but I did buy the above image as a fridge magnet from a street vendor outside of it. Much more affordable, and absolutely worth it.

that's because you're in France, go to Britain and you can take whatever you want for free. that's how it all got there anyways

This needs to be a pinned post in at least five of the communities I subscribe to.

[–] Rubisco@slrpnk.net 25 points 17 hours ago

I almost posted it to several meme comms but wasn't sure if it crossed their rules. I agree, it's a problem.

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 35 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

We need to normalize shaming people for casually sharing stolen art. This includes people sharing things they "made" with AI.

I think of it this way, if I publish a work of art I make, if you share it in a way I did not want but still link back to me as the artist, it is going to be really hard for me to be upset with you because even if you stole the art from me you have brought my art to more people's attention so the impact cannot be seen as purely bad.

Which doesn't make it right, I am not advocating for stealing art from artists, I am trying to emphasize that if your attentions are good, when in doubt link to the artist. I mean... why not?

edit also keep in mind that most actually decent ways of identifying how relevant a website is from the perspective of a search engine is how many unique places that are linked to from that website that people also find useful. I think this is a useful rough measurement of relevance and thus in a structural sense the more you link to genuinely relevant and interesting things, the more connected the entire community becomes in a generative way.

Take for example Metafilter, one of the ways you can quantify that Metafilter is an interesting and unique website to read is the degree of interesting and unique links that are placed into context in interesting ways there.

[–] AnarchistArtificer@slrpnk.net 7 points 8 hours ago

I agree. This is one of the few areas in which shame can be quite productive

[–] NightFantom@slrpnk.net 30 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Is that the reason people crop out artists?

[–] Rubisco@slrpnk.net 52 points 17 hours ago (4 children)

Oh wow. That's so brain-dead that it's hard to believe it's not satire

Edit: thanks for giving context

[–] Rubisco@slrpnk.net 4 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

It's soo weird, right? Like...what an utterly mad hill to die on. It's really not a difficult or unreasonable request.

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 44 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

I blocked that user the other day. They spam content, which is intentionally degraded, and they troll people who call them on it. I thought about saying something, but I looked at their history and this is just what they do, all the time. I didn't know they made a whole platform about it. Thanks for the context.

Like, I even get what they're saying. I would not appreciate art if it were watermarked across the middle. I wouldn't hate it, I'd either downvote it or not vote at all. I would consider that trashy, though there's probably a reason (people stealing art and making stickers of it, for example). I just would not upvote it. But what this user is doing is going to the trouble to crop artist names off of comic strips because they believe the artist should not be known. They want the credit for what they do but they don't think others should get credit, and that's the problem.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 18 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I have tagged them so I know to downvote when they remove signatures (sometimes they don't notice, which is amusing)

[–] higgsboson@piefed.social 8 points 13 hours ago

lol. I also have apparently had that user already tagged as toxic.

Seeing them get ratioed into oblivion is nice

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago

fuck i didn't even see that one.

[–] NightFantom@slrpnk.net 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Lmao what a trash take, thanks for sharing!

[–] Rubisco@slrpnk.net 9 points 16 hours ago

Yeah, it gave me such a head spin that I felt a meme was earned. Today's small scale WTF news.

[–] Leonixster@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I'm sorry, the best I can do is write "credit to the artist" because I'm too lazy to look up who did it. Take it or leave it, bucko

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 4 points 13 hours ago

I think that's really all anyone is asking for.

[–] Devconsole@sh.itjust.works 23 points 17 hours ago

Attributing the image for this post was a nice touch
