Their strategy right now is literally "Let's charge more to sell less, and let's also kneecap a revenue stream that could prop us up during this memory crisis." Sony has been winning so long that they forgot how easy it is to lose. They are gonna find out.

Edit: I just want to point out that Sony could have easily shifted this into a win. "Hey, this is Tim Sony, President of Sony. Right now, things are hard for everyone in the world of consumer electronics. For 20 years we've tried to bring you the best value in entertainment through quality games and low prices. Unfortunately, today, we have to raise our prices to match cost. I know you don't like it. I don't like it, either. However, we still want to give you the best value we can. While we can't control the cost of components, we can control the cost of our first party games. So, now when you buy a new PS5, you get your choice of any first party game you want for free. Any game, no exceptions. We're also throwing in 6 months of PlayStation Plus as well, which gives you even more games to play immediately. While we wish we could bring you a lower priced console, we are trying our best to make it so that you don't have to spend more to have the same amount of fun. Now, get out there, and kill, kill, kill."

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 weeks ago

"Also, all our first party games will be released on PC at a later date. Why would we leave money on the table? That's just stupid!"

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Kinda weird at the end he called for a school shooting, but otherwise good PR.

[–] aMockTie@piefed.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (8 children)

It's a reference to the Dungeon Crawler Carl series of books. If you haven't read them, I can't recommend them enough. The audiobooks are also incredibly well done.

I assumed it was because they saw handheld computers and the Steam Machine as serious competition to Sony's own hardware.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

That was my initial thought, but they don't even have a current gen handheld do they?

(And if they do, frankly the marketing team should be fired)

Perhaps the steam machine is a legit concern for them though

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No, they don't have a handheld, and that's kinda the problem. The ecosystem is growing without them. Steamdeck, Xbox ROG Ally, Nintendo Switch. That's 100% of their competitors, each with handhelds that nearly came out of nowhere in the last few years. Sony is SUPER behind the curve on this, and no amount of "New PSVita5" is gonna save them. They biffed it with the mobile market, and instead of buying in and playing second fiddle, they want to take their ball and go home.

They do, but its bad.

Its just a handled device that stores from only your ps5. Can nor play anything itself.

Which is weird to me, because the software and licensing is where all the money is. And it isn't subject to supply chain issues the way that hardware is.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 91 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

If you didn’t have a PS5 already, you aren’t likely to want one now.

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 35 points 2 weeks ago

Perfect time to stop publishing on Steam lol

[–] SolarPunker@slrpnk.net 9 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)
[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 39 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Good news, Sony desperately wants to sell you one.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 29 points 2 weeks ago

For insane prices.

With GTA 6 releasing soon this might not be so true. I feel a lot of players won’t want to wait for a PC port.

[–] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

That game will never live up to the hype.

If you were going to buy a console for GTA6 though (you shouldn't) you'd buy the Series X over a regular PS5 though.

It's cheaper and more powerful.

[–] eddanja@lemmy.world 26 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

People are buying the Switch 2?

[–] leoj@piefed.social 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

right? who wants 80 dollar games.

[–] Soulifix@piefed.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That almost never go on sale.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 8 points 2 weeks ago

Mario kart 8 came out in 2014 and it'a still full price with predatory dlc because they know kids will annoy their parents to buy them.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 14 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

It was Nintendo's fastest selling console of all time. So, yes.

I got one for free because Amazon fucked up and had a unit in the storage containers I bought a while back.

Thing's just collecting dust while I wait for Duskbloods. Which I may not even buy because IIRC, it has a PvP focus and I don't want to subscribe to Nintendo Online.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ok, I just had a great idea. Are you ready for this? It's such a good idea. You may want to sit down for this.

Ok, you ready? Cool.

You could just send the Switch 2.....to me! For free!!!

ISN'T THAT A GREAT IDEA???

I bought the original Switch for SMT:V, which then took years to release, and shortly after got a PC release. At first I liked the console, but honestly the Steam Deck is heaps and bounds better.

What really drove me off the fucking edge is how garbage and overpriced Nintendo's hardware is. They purposely design things to not be repairable and as fucked as possible, and they use horrible quality components to make their stuff.

After sitting in its case in a drawer for a few months, my joycon analogue sticks started melting. The rubber just lost its integrity. If Nintendo cared about that kind of thing, they'd design the joycons to have the tips be able to pop off, but no. Further, the component itself is garbage and drifts. That's well known. You can get replacement hall effect sticks for $10, or you can buy a new set of joycons for ~$80.

Nintendo could have designed these to be easily maintainable by users, they could've designed them to not have the drift problem. They actively chose to be anti-consumer, and with the Switch 2 they doubled down on it.

8bitdo offers a clone of the Switch Pro controller, that's better, has more features, and somehow they magically manage to keep the price lower than the official Switch Pro controller, despite not being a massive corporation with pockets as deep as Nintendo.

Problem with Nintendo, is it's mostly just remakes of the same games and characters. Also they screwed any customers who bought games before the switch 1, as you can't play them on switch.

The switch 1, they never fixed the joycons.. They should have recalled and redesigned every joycon.. But, for some reason people seem ok with that. Nintendo imho is actually fairly anti consumer

Ps5 I ended up selling. It's good but I figured I have hundreds of steam games, so there was no real benefit of having a ps5 too.

Use the console you want.. But, I'm never buying a Nintendo again. I'm happy to be able to continue playing the same games I bought 15 years ago on the latest steam deck

[–] underscores@lemmy.zip 13 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

Nintendo is extremely anti consumer, even anti-fan of their own products.

Why people buy Nintendo products and games years after years is crazy to me.

People who didn't mind to pay alot of money bought the PS5 at launch. Those who didn't buy it then, were waiting for the price to drop. Increasing it now is not going to get them much sales.

[–] jestho@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago

I probably would have bought one around launch, but they were impossible to get. So I bought a gaming PC instead - no regrets what so ever.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Raising prices and removing future games from pc, It's like Sony doesn't want any more money.
