Nimrod was a fantastic hunter, and only because Elmer Fudd was a bad hunter did the name become synonymous with stupidity.

Imagine being a bad ass of repute in your time only for a random ass cartoon in the future to turn your name into a punchline.

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just a reminder that Nimrod was actually the name of a mighty hunter and considered one of the first kings after the floods in the bible. It wasn't until Bugs used it sarcastically as an insult that it began to be used as a term for fool, or dumbass.

[–] cypherpunks@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/nimrod has several plausible explanations which predate Bugs Bunny's use of it

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 3 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

Well Looney Tunes would be far more widespread than some play and both of the examples before Bugs seem to be someone being called Nimrod for hunting women in the sense of romantic pursuit. I would argue that it’s actually pretty likely that it was indeed Bugs that made it mean idiot to most people.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Not only that, but if it was already associated with being dumb prior to Loony Tunes, Bugs' sarcasm would be weird since he is clearly referencing the fact Nimrod was a great hunter to disparage Fudd, a hunter.

...he looks pretty good for eighty-eight years of age, honestly...

Nimrod is a biblical name, he was a mighty hunter. We only associate it with "dumbass" because Bugs Bunny sarcastically called Elmer Fudd "Nimrod" in an early cartoon.

[–] GandalftheBlack@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago

I was confused because I'm only aware of the biblical name, not its use in Bug Bunny

And now it means dipshit forever, that's the power of a trickster god like Bugs.

[–] GalacticSushi@piefed.blahaj.zone 79 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Rabbits will gladly eat carrots, but they have a high sugar content that makes them unsuitable for regular consumption.

We associate rabbits with carrots because Bugs Bunny ate one while parodying a character from the 1934 movie It Happened One Night.

Bugs Bunny has an impressive ability to warp our understanding of the world around us.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Well, kinda. Nimrod as an insult came from nowhere but he eats carrots because rabbits were/are known to destroy carrot patches.

But they don't eat the taproot (orange part) underground, they eat the greens which kills the plant just the same

Crossdressing was always fun and cool, but it wasn't until Bugs Bunny first dressed up as a lady in the 1939 cartoon Hare-Um Scare-Um that we collectively realized how sexy it was.

Story goes, he woke Mel Blanc from a coma. He was unresponsive for a couple of weeks, until a doctor addressed Bugs instead of Mel. They say Mel responded as Bugs and woke up.

[–] nightofmichelinstars@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

If I was in a coma and someone said "bugs" at me I'd wake up too. Get them off me!

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

My favorite explanation of Bugs Bunny's memetic potential is this video parodying Metal Gear Solid.

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Holy shit man, that was amazing

No one outside of a worker's union has the right to blast a union worker for being a wage cuck

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 56 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

[–] TheJesusaurus@piefed.ca 26 points 2 days ago

I know for a fact from that photo and one paragraph blurb that I haven't worked a day in my life as hard as his easiest day

[–] jupyter_rain@discuss.tchncs.de 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Chilling. Imagine being a miner and having death as a reasonable danger at work. Going down into the mine every day, being afraid of being crushed, suffocating, drowning, exploding and seeking music as a form of relief, especially this song. IT really shows the importance or unions.

[–] iocase@lemmy.zip 27 points 2 days ago

It's why they weren't afraid to go to open war with mine owners and the US government, who bombed them in the first use of aircraft to bomb "combatants" by the US military
