First people off the plane should be those with tightest connections, though there's no way to prove that for some forms of transportation.

I could get behind a rush-time black-coffee-only line, but I almost never buy coffee out unless I'm on vacation anyway

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 129 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Surely the first one should be the other way around, as people without checked luggage can exit the airport right away without waiting at the baggage carousel?

[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 56 points 1 week ago

For sure, the first one is absolutely unhinged and is the complete opposite of the second.

It's like saying the people who are going to have to wait for their fancy coffee, that takes 20 mins to prepare, should all get to go first and black coffee drinkers should let everyone else skip the queue.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Checked luggage as opposed to carry on. If you don't need to rummage around the overhead to find your bag, you get to leave first.

[–] papalonian@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I fly a lot and rarely do I see someone with absolutely nothing on the plane. Having a checked bag by no means excludes you from also having a carry-on

[–] fishy@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

Yup, same. I almost never see someone without a backpack or something. I often see people without a carry on suitcase, usually because they were forced to gate check it though.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I flew a fair bit (4-6 times a month) for my last job and while I would say sure everyone has a bag, it was very common for people to only have a personal item (backpack/purse) and not bring a carryon (roller bag that need to go in the overhead compartment).

The real solution here is to let everyone who doesn’t need access to the overhead compartment disembark first, irrespective of whether or not they checked a bag.

[–] logi@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

But they are likely to be in a window seat with their path blocked by two on-carriers so the whole thing would descend into chaos.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

There isn’t a way to make it more chaotic.

I once drove to a city that I was about to move to, took public transit to the airport and flew back to the city I was moving from. I had my phone and my wallet on me and nothing else. It was the weirdest feeling moving through an airport without a backpack or anything else.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 13 points 1 week ago

She didn't say "People with no carry on" she said "People with checked luggage." That is not the same thing at all.

[–] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

oh, that does make sense now

[–] Tja@programming.dev 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Does it? You need to wait at the carousel anyway. If I have checked luggage, I let everyone else exit, I'm in no hurry.

hm, I feel like trump now, agreeing with the last comment I read....

[–] SkyNTP@lemmy.ml 81 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Checked luggage.... so that they can get at the bag carousel faster and wait even longer? I think you mean let people with no carry-ons off first.

[–] binarytobis@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I always thought that planes would unload much faster if people let the left side go four rows or so ahead so then we have two people collecting things in the aisle at a time instead of one. Or, even more efficient, let people in seat C all get off as one unit, then D, then B, etc.

There’s no way we would ever organize the absolute animals that take airplanes enough to ever see such a thing though. Any time they say “please stay seated for people with tight connections” I see a bunch of people immediately stand in the aisle and cause a jumble.

Edit: Someone posted a video about something very similar below.

[–] nshibj@lemmy.world 77 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Why would people with checked luggage need to leave the plane first? They are going to be waiting 20~30 minutes for their suitcase at the conveyor belts. They can't hurry even if they wanted to.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 35 points 1 week ago (2 children)

There was an airport that found by moving certain gates around to increase the time to walk to the baggage pickup area, complaints about waiting for luggage to show up dramatically decreased. It does take a few minutes to fully unload the belly of a plane into carts then drive over and unload the carts onto a belt. Even if the crew is fast.

[–] gramie@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 week ago (2 children)

If you've ever flown into an airport in a country like Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, etc, you suddenly realize just how fast and efficient baggage handling can be.

I don't know if it's still true, but I remember reading that Kansai airport in Osaka Japan has never lost a piece of luggage since it opened in 1994.

[–] 200ok@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Same with the Las Vegas airport. They want you out and gambling as fast as possible.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago

Japan places high value on excellence. It's basically taboo to do a piss poor job at anything people are depending on you for.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

I hate that. Sometimes when I disembark after a long flight, I'm tired and uncomfortable and my bag might be heavy, and I don't feel like walking up and down three flights of stairs, wandering through a labyrinth, boarding a shuttle and waiting to get off somewhere else, all before getting to my checked luggage.

Especially when I get there and it still hasn't arrived yet because the luggage needs to take an extra shuttle too.

[–] cymbal_king@lemmy.world 35 points 1 week ago

People with connections deserve priority deboarding, especially when the first flight was delayed. Some times I've heard attendants saying to do this, but it never successfully happens

[–] CannonFodder@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Seems rather racist to let black coffee drinkers have an express line.

[–] Speculater@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

It's her attempt at reparations.

[–] qarl@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The checked baggage one might make sense if it’s saying that passengers with only checked luggage should exit first. Those passengers would not need to rummage through the overhead bins. The idea still ignores the problem of other passengers themselves taking up space when shuffling around getting out of seats to do this, though.

If it somehow worked, it wouldn’t make getting out of the airport any faster, but it would make getting off the plane faster.

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'll never understand why they don't load back to front (assuming only front loading set ups) ideally in my mind they should kind everyone up by window seat then middle seat then aisle seat. But that should make it challenging to produce because people

Thanks. I've already watched this as someone else also linked it here. Over never heard of CpG grey before. Seems like something to check out more of when I get a chance. Thanks again

If you feel like getting annoyed every time you get a plane in the future: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAHbLRjF0vo

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

None of this is new to me, but I appreciate the effort and hope many other people also watch it.

Everyone here is on about the luggage rule inversion.

The black coffee idea sounds pretty good at first, until you have to work on a typical espresso machine. After the 4th black coffee the next few teas, americanos or steamings are slow and crap. Unless you add water from a separate boiler, or it's a drip coffee.

It would definitely depend on the cafe set up, but I would love this for places that serve drip, which is pretty much all I drink.

[–] wieson@feddit.org 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

How (and why) would you make tea on an espresso machine?

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

The ones I have worked with have a button or twist handle for boiling water. Since it uses it for making espesso anyway, why not have the option to pour some on top of a teabag?

(I just re-read the question: to clarify, I meant proper, large, three-group espresso machines)

[–] wieson@feddit.org 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I didn't know they had a different spout on the side. I thought they would somehow want to get water from the high pressure outlet through the portafilter

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

It makes sense until you have to scrape off the coffee ground from the screen every time you want tea : ).

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

We used to have entire coffee shops for black only.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not sure what airports the OOP fellow has been to, but there are times I've been off the plane really quickly with checked luggage, and all I earn is a longer wait at baggage claim.

They aren't in any rush at Canadian airports.

As for the second, there are a myriad of ways to solve that problem:

  • Brew your own coffee.
  • Go to a coffee shop that doesn't have a dessert menu for a coffee list.
  • If you must order at a large mainstream chain, order ahead.
[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It’s not exactly the same as an express line, but IIRC Starbucks already has a process where if you order brewed black coffee, the cashier dispenses it for you before taking the next customer, rather than turning it over to the baristas’ queue. There are so many things you can say about Starbucks, but failing to understand efficiency is rarely one of them.

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I've seen an occasional Tim Horton's location have a separate "coffee only" line, which has always been a misnomer, because they'll invariably just let you order whatever you want anyways; but it does usually go a bit faster because the majority of customers are still honest enough to join the appropriate queue.

[–] Flower@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

It's maybe better to lock all overhead bins electrically until the door is open. Although there would be still people standing up waiting for the second the bins are unlocked.
