That daily post series I was doing wasn't going too well in terms of getting me to work on my project and it became a nightmare for my adhd, so when I inevitably missed a day I just decided to quit it and just post music whenever. On the bright side, I've been listening to lots of radio and that's getting me much more into a music making mood catgirl-happy

While ‘Karmageddon’ has sparked significant conversation and controversy, Iyah has stood her ground. She refused to compromise her vision when asked to change a key lyric line, leading to the end of her contract with her manager. She chose to walk away from her record label and now, fully independent, Iyah continues to carve her own path as an artist. Her fearless approach is shaped by her unique perspective as a qualified medical doctor, having worked on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arlen_Siu

The song "El Zenzontle Pregunta Por Arlen" is a poignant tribute to Arlen Siu, a young Nicaraguan revolutionary and martyr. The lyrics are structured as a conversation between two birds, the guardabarranco (Nicaragua's national bird) and the zenzontle (mockingbird), which symbolize freedom and the spread of messages. The guardabarranco inquires about Arlen, indicating her importance and the impact she had on those who remember her.

The zenzontle responds by describing Arlen as a 'sweet star in the sugarcane field' and a 'multicolored arrow' among the whispers of the grassland. These metaphors highlight her vibrant spirit and the stealth with which she moved through the revolution. The song also mentions that she 'buried the clean star of her heart in the hollow of her guitar,' suggesting that Arlen's ideals and love for her country were deeply embedded in her music and poetry. The reference to her going 'upriver to the savannah' likens her to a serene water lily, emphasizing her purity and dedication to the cause.

The chorus speaks of the clandestine nature of the revolution, with a butterfly representing Arlen and a hummingbird as her guardian. This imagery conveys the delicate yet powerful influence of Arlen's actions and the protective spirit of the revolution. The song serves as a metaphorical representation of Arlen's legacy, painting her as an enduring symbol of the struggle for freedom and justice in Nicaragua.

Extended content warning(?):

King 810 are a controversial band with a massive "cult following" out of Flint Michigan. I'm honestly not sure how reactionary some of their music might get.

I know they have been called the most hated metal band in the world. But as I understand it, a lot of that has to do with having loaded AK-47s on stage and their shows often turning into riots or violent flareups in the crowd just cuz they were super local and so people would turn up, TURN UP and settle scores.

we'd shoot it out, right there in the street
then I'd walk out on stage with gunpowder on me
- Yavid - Where Were You

^ this is verifiable facts lol. There's helicopter or other surveillance footage of him in the gunfight that got him locked up. Shootouts with cops etc.

It's obviously a really gritty scene. I may have a bias towards this from listening to so much I.C.P and them both being from Michigan.

This song isn't something I'd classify as metal.

The lead singer David Gunn started doing solo work under Yavid and I found that, worked my way back to this.

I find the music video really moving and raw. A confronting depiction of life in Flint, maybe not today, but not too long ago either.

TLDR

Gunn has done time, and a lot of crime, I'm sure he has a lot of victims. I have not dug into him. If the band is particularly bad in some way that I'm just not familiar with as a foreigner I apologise and accept my fate. But I love this song and if King 810 / David Gunn don't have some fucked up politics that I don't know about I might post some Yavid stuff too.
