Blame the Nazi Germans for making me become a gun designer ... I always wanted to construct agriculture machinery.

I am proud to have created a weapon that has become a symbol of resistance against tyranny.

It’s funny that Kalashnikov and Glock, designers of the two most used guns in the world, originally designed mundane things. Kalash with farm equipment, and Glock with shower curtains

Glock with shower curtains

holy shit now that's a jump

It was made out of a Clock because all you need to do is add a little line.

Trump is a real gamer and knows AKs usually do more damage in games than their Western counterparts

[-] axont@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago

I think that's to imply the AK is chambered for 7.62×39mm, which does hit harder than 5.56mm NATO.

[-] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

AK-74/AKM are for 5.45x39mm, 7.62 was used for early types of AK.

[-] Palacegalleryratio@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

Not to ‘Ackchyually’ you, but the AKM is also chambered in 7.62. The 74 was the one to bring in the intermediate cartridge.

Red Dawn (1984) was about Russia invading.

Red Dawn (2012) was about juche-boi invading.

It's time for Red Dawn 3: Chavistas! maduro-katana-1maduro-katana-2 chavez-guns marx-guns-blazing

I loved learning about those guns. They're simultaneously put together by some eldritch instructions, but also invincible.

[-] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago

Also simple and cheap to make. They say logistics win wars, and the war in Ukraine shows that ignoring nukes, peer combat will be quite conventional.

[-] Des@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

although drones are likely to be the 21st century's machine gun

[-] DefinitelyNotAPhone@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago

Drones and a fuckload of conventional artillery. Turns out the latter has always been hyper effective against damn near any target if you can spot efficiently.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Apparently there aren't many 47s left. I'm told most of the AKs in circulation are AKMs or 74s, or newer variants.

[-] EmoThugInMyPhase@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

I don’t think 47s were ever issued or were quickly replaced with AKMs and 74s.

[-] TheVelvetGentleman@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

The AK47 is just a concept at this point. It's the slightly scarier "assault weapon".

Most gun folks in this country do not recognize the superiority of gas pistons over direct impingement, but my friends overseas are saying that over the years of fighting in some of the worst conditions that it is really no contest, the gas piston is just better folks!

[-] DefinitelyNotAPhone@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago

Outside of certain sects of Fudds I think the general gun nut consensus is that ARs and AKs have both been functionally perfected, and either is fine. Modern ARs can be beat to shit and keep cycling rounds, and modern AKs have much better accuracy than their cheap ancestors did.

Let us plunge now into the new frontier

[-] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah. Even chuddier gun nuts respect the AK, in my experience.
