Treason is such a bullshit crime. Nobody has control over what country they're born in, but if you decide you don't like the one you were assigned as an adult suddenly you're an evil traitor. It's not like this guy brought an experimental fighter plane or nuclear secrets with him, he simply chose to get off of a sinking ship.

It's even dumber than that. He has resided in Crimea since 2014. He didn't cross the border the border crossed him. He was no longer a Ukrainian citizen by default they probably just kept him on the flight roster and called it treason when they tried to call him back to the air force in 2022. Ukraine still doesn't recognize Crimea as part of Russia.

It's not like I was ever a treason stan but I never really thought about exactly how bullshit it is until this post. Basically putting you in an impossible situation if you want to exercise that pesky free will thing - and as another comrade followed up, it's not like he actively defected, the 'border crossed him.'

Literally everyone on the Russian controlled side is now a traitor as per Ukraine.

What a handsome lad. Glad he pursued peaceful space exploration rather than becoming cannon fodder.

Better fate than dying for Blackrock

Imagining a scenario where the space force is called up and they heroically fly up to the iss in boeing rockets that explode on the way to arrest him.

I'm pre-emptively adding those hypothetical people onto the victims of communism list

[–] Futterbinger@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

They'd claim the Russians did it. It would be the Lusitania moment that leads to world war 3

Too bad they hired an Astronomer instead of an Astrologer

If Biden was still president they would have sent a space force guy up to arrest him. I don't even know what Trump is going to do. Ignore it because it's stupid and he doesn't care? Make a stink out of it to win points with the norms crowd? Announce that crime is legal in space (And probably try to do something crypto related)?

So long as he stays in the Russian side of the ISS they don't have jurisdiction

[–] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

The only thing that can fight a space cop is a space Luigi.

talk about a flight risk. maybe Ukraine should've had a space program instead of a Nazi arming and terror program.

Russian astronaut: Cosmonaut

Ukrainian astronaut: Ukronazis flying into the stratosphere after stepping on a mine
