“I can’t miss work. I love the company; I love the people here. I missed one day; I’m not going to miss two in a row.”

Just take the day, dude. It's unhealthy to be that dedicated to a damn job, haha.

It might not be dedication, that just might be the spin that it was given to make this a feel-good story.

It might be "if I miss 2 days of work I might be 'encouraged into retiring' because they won't see this old man as reliable anymore.", or it could be the math of "if I miss 2 days of work in one paycheck, I'll need to choose between eating, paying rent, or seeing my grandkids."

Or maybe he just actually loves his job that much, not everything needs to be bleak.

A cheap bike would have made this a lot more bearable.

About 40 miles in 10 hours to avoid missing work.

This is totally wild to me. There is more than 1 road connecting Kelowna and Penticton, why didn't the bus company have a contingency plan for this situation? Not to mention the massive waterway, he probably could have borrowed an inflatable raft from someone and floated down there in less time.

I definitely admire the self-sufficiency and work ethic on display here, but damn. Guy doesn't need new running shoes, he needs a support network.

Honestly that "work ethic" is at unhealthy levels, like some sort of mental dependency on needing to work o somr sort of fear of repercussions at work.
