I stumbled across this post after seeing the commentary by the writer and director about the show's season 2 premiere. They were giving me bad vibes so I went to see if anyone else was feeling the same way. It turns out, yes. There are bad vibes all over the place. There are parallels to October 8th. for season 2 in favor of the Israelis, including the Hannibal Protocol, people being kidnapped, and so on.

And for those who don't know, the show's director previously directed Chernobyl. And of course he has anti-communist brainworms subsidized by fossil fuel companies on that show as well. He likes to hide behind "just asking questions" from the libbiest lib who ever libbed perspective.

A reminder that the Chernobyl show is incredibly ahistorical despite having pretenses towards historicity. For example, it portrays the scientist living in a apartment block alone, when in fact he lived happily on a farm with his family, a fact acknowledged by his daughter in interviews. This is as well as pretending that the people who were dealing with the crisis weren't among the top in their field for nuclear science, and were a bunch of bumbling bureaucrats.

It also does not acknowledge that despite the Soviets lack of communication to the public, this was mostly due to the fact that they didn't exactly know what was going on as well, and causing mass panic with misinformation is exactly the wrong thing to do in a crisis.

And don't forget that the direct death count is in the 30-50 range. The UN says up to 4000 excess deaths over the 60 year post-disaster period. For the worst nuclear disaster. A disaster which can be prevented.

Compare that with the uncountable deaths yearly from coal burning. Which is a disaster that can't be prevented (except by not doing it). And thats not including climate change. The Chernobyl disaster is nothing compare to the social murder occurring daily in America.

(Not to mention the USSR relocated thousands of people out of the area. Compare that any of the thousands of superfund sites, where there is basically no assistance to leave. And if you do get compensation its after decades of legal battles.)

So I haven't played either game, but I have seen a bunch of Discourse^tm^ about them, and I gotta say it's weird how almost nobody who talks about this game ever talks about the Seraphites/WLF. Like I think I may have heard one or two reviewers mention them in passing but I had no idea what either group's deal was until I read the post you linked.

I landed on this emotional idea of, can we, over the course of the game, make you feel this intense hate that is universal in the same way that unconditional love is universal? This hate that people feel has the same kind of universality. You hate someone so much that you want them to suffer in the way they’ve made someone you love suffer.

There’s something distinctly Israeli about describing that kind of hatred as “universal”

I watched the first season, and I just saw the first episode of the second season, and this was a day after watching the new BBC documentary about settlers in the West Bank. I did notice how the aesthetics of the little patsoc enclave in the last of us match those of the isn’treali settlers; i.e., wearing machine guns all the time, dressing like cowboys, dehumanizing the enemy and blowing them away even when they aren’t attacking you and then laughing about it, living in a walled town, etc.. I only watched this because my younger son was into it, and after the first episode, we watched a little of the BBC documentary together, and he was also shocked at the parallels.

I remember learning this after playing the game and being totally blindsided by it. Not that I doubt Druckman intended for the story to say something about Palestine and Israel, but because his zionist understanding of the situation completely lacks the context of settler colonialism it ultimately says nothing.

After having it pointed out to me I can see that a lot of zionist myths have crept into the game, which partly explains why it feels like such a sludge of misanthropy. Part of justifying the abuses of those in power is telling yourself everyone would be just as bad or worse, and Druckman really seems to have internalized that.

Yah it's like he couldn't help hide his ideology because he assumes that's how the world works. "Everybody's a fascist like me so of course a father would kill everyone in a hospital because of course doctors looking to cure a disease would perform a life-threatening procedure on a minor with no other tests."

It would have been much better (imo) if the procedure was only life threatening. As it’s presented, there’s literally zero chance of Ellie surviving. So he either kills them or they kill her. So much more complex to have it be he kills them or they might kill her

The "Why can't we all just get along and forgive one another instead of taking revenge?" is a position that only benefits the oppressor. We've seen what happens when slave owners and nazis were forgiven and they've done nothing but fester and spread their ideas.

Zionists spout the same rhetoric. They'll kill your entire family, including children by shooting/stabbing, then ask you to just move on and stop being so hateful. The show's creators have drawn parallels to the genocide in Palestine in favor of the Israelis. Some of these themes were present in the video game, but I've never played it so I wouldn't know. I have, however, seen the show and it has bad vibes all over the place.

Idk Season 2 so far is a pretty good condemnation against this. I imagine it will get worst but

spoilerI walked away from the last episode feeling pretty upset about the council in Jackson not backing Ellie and the reasons were told by the homophobe for why they shouldn't do nothing.

Also we are made to feel like we should hate Abby because Joel is the main protagonist, but even that there's some moral dilemma in what would you do if some one point blank murdered your father who was trying to cure the world from an apocalyptic disease. The killing of the religious group by the WLFs will be interesting to see how they play that out, but they did that thing of look they even killed the children. Which is bad vibes as you said.

quickest tl;dr i can do:

game's two main enemy factions, the WLF and the seraphites are clearly based on the IDF and Palestinians respectively. The IDF analogue are written to be dicks but a somewhat rounded depiction, the Palestinian analogue are a bunch of super religious cult members that marry their daughters off to their elder men and exile and try to kill their trans kids.

writer of the game is a zionist liberal that felt ashamed at the fascist anger he felt back in the 2000s over IDF settlers being killed in self defense, so instead of doing self crit about that he was like "ill show the gamers they would have been just as mad as me!" and manufactured the sequel's narrative to be like

spoilerjoel murdered -> bet ur mad about that lol -> second half of the game you play as enemy -> wow wasnt their anger justified and your anger justified as well??? -> cycles of revenge bad mmkay story set upon the stage of the IDF and Palestinian analogues
