Community Rules

You must post before you leave

Be nice. Assume others have good intent (within reason).

Block or ignore posts, comments, and users that irritate you in some way rather than engaging. Report if they are actually breaking community rules.

Use content warnings and/or mark as NSFW when appropriate. Most posts with content warnings likely need to be marked NSFW.

Most 196 posts are memes, shitposts, cute images, or even just recent things that happened, etc. There is no real theme, but try to avoid posts that are very inflammatory, offensive, very low quality, or very "off topic".

Bigotry is not allowed, this includes (but is not limited to): Homophobia, Transphobia, Racism, Sexism, Abelism, Classism, or discrimination based on things like Ethnicity, Nationality, Language, or Religion.

Avoid shilling for corporations, posting advertisements, or promoting exploitation of workers.

Proselytization, support, or defense of authoritarianism is not welcome. This includes but is not limited to: imperialism, nationalism, genocide denial, ethnic or racial supremacy, fascism, Nazism, Marxism-Leninism, Maoism, etc.

Avoid AI generated content.

Avoid misinformation.

Avoid incomprehensible posts.

No threats or personal attacks.

Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

You can change "RIF" to "every single 3rd party app"

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah that didn't fit in the bottom text though.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"to all Reddit API refugees"

Not perfect. It's doable though

To celebrate, let me repost this same meme I made here when I first started posting in 196:

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 49 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Losing RIF was the final straw, glad it prompted me to switchover.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 day ago

Yeah there were a lot of little things before then. It kind of felt like being in an abusive relationship every time you saw an admin post. Glad you made the switch!

[–] salvaria@lemmy.blahaj.zone 37 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

RIP RIF, I still have it on my phone as a memorial

[–] veroxii@aussie.zone 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah I still have bacon reader on my phone. I click it accidentally sometimes and it shows their goodbye message. 😭

That said I'm a Summit man now. Very happy with it!

Been seeing a lot of cakes on Lemmy today

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

Happy to join in on your cake day too .... yeah that exodus two years ago was an exciting summer

I took a break from reddit before getting into lemmy but that is when i left reddit!

[–] hapablap 4 points 1 day ago

Once Reddit announced they were going public I knew it was over. Money corrupts everything. I definitely spent (wasted) a lot of time on RIF.

[–] Greenbeard@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I can't believe it's been two years already

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

We're now integral to Lemmy history and legacy

A very good evening to former RIF users, the true best of the third party Reddit apps.

[–] Laggindragon@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

I joined when Reddit pulled their API bullshit. Haven’t looked back since. I like it here.

[–] standarduser@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 1 day ago

It’s been a good two years. Finally settled on my instance too, shame about lemm.ee though; love that one. But this one works too and Blahaj zone will be my backup if dbzero goes down next. Here’s to more years here!

Reddit is fun. It was a reddit app that was killed when reddit started charging crack prices for api requests.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 5 points 1 day ago

Ah, Yeah that checks out. I never posted on reddit but the api thing made me make this account.

[–] theangryseal@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Holy shit, time flies. It was Apollo for me.

Damn.

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

I'll be honest, I was using the official app. But when a bunch of people jumped ship, I saw how much cooler the new ship was and jumped with them. And I still like this ship.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 6 points 1 day ago

This is the most based thing I've read all day.

[–] HelluvaKick@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Thank you lemmy for getting me into Star Trek

Apollo was such a great client. Voyager is a decent replacement, but it’s missing so much.

Oddly enough, Christian is now working on the mobile app for the Digg reboot. That’ll be interesting to watch.

[–] MJKee9@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I am a sync guy, but here with you

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Same and still using sync for lemmy!

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Do you have the problem where it doesn't mark posts as read? I started having that 8 months ago and haven't been able to use it since. It drives me insane!

happy lemmy anniversary, from someone who shares it by pure coincidence!

[–] Fourth@mander.xyz 3 points 1 day ago
[–] TheSlad@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

Damn its been that long already?

I miss RIF :(

[–] omgboom@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago

Lol yep this is what brought me here.

I miss the simple interface the most. Like I can navigate the official app but I don't like it, and it resets my position browsing r/all randomly.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Hi friends 💜 its been a much better experience over the last two years, looking forward to many more with the Fediverse xx

Still here, still trying to convince people to leave reddit, but some people won't even leave twitter or facebook, so what are you gonna do? Lemmy has taught me to be happy with my beans.
