/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Well, this certainly explains Starfleet's legendary opsec.

[–] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

At least there aren't any flying toasters.

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Wrong franchise ;-)

[–] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 47 points 1 week ago (3 children)

No one under 35 will understand the joke.

[–] Atropos@lemmy.world 32 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm under 35! First machine was a win98 XPS T450. 450Mhz!!!

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 23 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm under 35 and I was playing Prince of Persia on DOS first (in 93-94). Being born in a second world country has its... benefits(?)

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

I understood most 80s cartoon references since we got them a decade late.

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago

Guys? We found the exception!

[–] ahornsirup@feddit.org 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well then, as someone under 35 - can someone please explain?

[–] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 18 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The window displayed in the screen is the configuration dialog for the "Flying Through Space" screensaver in Windows 95: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RcLJJ5GOXg

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Gets really good towards the end!

[–] ahornsirup@feddit.org 7 points 1 week ago

Thank you :)

[–] troyunrau@lemmy.ca 22 points 1 week ago (2 children)

This is amazing!

If you're feeling nostalgic, grab the Win95 screensaver here, and plop it in C:\Windows\System32

https://archive.org/details/ssstars_201812

Works on Win 10 and 11. Still jitters exactly as expected heh.

Linux users have clones available

[–] Matriks404@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Aren't screensavers executables? That's some security nightmare if it still work on Win11.

[–] troyunrau@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 days ago

It's not like this particular screensaver can load data, so it cannot be made to do bad things with malformed data or something. The security nightmare is only about finding a trusted copy of the original 32 bit SCR file. (Not the 16 bit one, which also exists.)

Windows asks for admin approval before copying it into system32. So you probably can't do this in a corporate environment.

[–] klu9@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago

Can't wait til we see the Enterprise's main view screen full of flying toasters.

[–] marlowe221@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I hate to be THAT guy, but…. That’s not the helm. That is Ops!

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Damn it, but thank you for being that guy, lol

I even questioned myself before submitting that title, did a quick google, and figured either that was the helm or both stations up front are collectively referred to as the helm.

The results that misled me...

...now I have to stealthily edit the title.

[–] marlowe221@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Yeah, there are various episodes that establish that different functions can be transferred to different bridge stations over the course of TNG.

I think when Data is piloting the ship from his old seat in PIC S3, that is what is happening, in universe.

[–] MeatPilot@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

"What happened we dropped out of warp, report!"

"Sir, something moved the mouse"

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

It seems like we are trapped inside some kind of endless labyrinth!

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

"Commander, why is the main viewscreen only getting 21 FPS?"

"Sorry captain, I had the starfield set too high while we have a Chrome tab open."

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 1 week ago

I used to stare at that screensaver for so long as a teenager. And I wasn't stoned.

[–] Gork@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 week ago

Slow to fast, but what about Ramming Speed™?

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And then the panel goes full BSoD while the view screen claims it needs to update drivers

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 1 week ago

This is literally how it works in Bridge Crew lol

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Warp the fuck out LMFAO!!!

This is one of the best!

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Data would totally use a bash shell.

[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Interestingly, bash shell was released 2 years after TNG came out.

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

But many years before it's set. Checkmate!

Actually, that is a fun fact. I have no idea if I'll ever use it but I feel happier knowing it.

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

fish, because he's not basic.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 5 points 1 week ago

zsh because he could actually figure out how to configure it.

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just FYI: saying "bash shell" is like saying "ATM machine"

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What do you have against automated ATM machines?

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

?

Either this is a joke and I don't get it or you don't know what ATM means

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It’s funny because it illustrates someone pedantic enough to point that out would also not get the joke.

Technically you are correct. It is like saying the Bourne again shell shell.

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

My attention was not to be pedantic, but informative. I hoped the "Just FYI" would carry that connotation instead of a pedantic one...

+ I'm literally autistic 💀

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social -3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Im literally disabled.
That has nothing to do with anything.

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

It has with in terms of sometimes being able to understand some jokes and effectively communicate what I mean on my part at least

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social -2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Take responsibility for yourself.

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

lmaoo, what a troll. Blowing up a simple "Just FYI" so much

and ofc they're from Piefed :p

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 1 points 6 days ago

You don't even understand simple jokes.
