I really didn't much care for it regarding all the hype and right up until that unveiling had no real plans of returning to the series. However, it is one of my favorite series of all time and in spite of it's $70 price tag and EA's shittiness in general as a company some things have got me considering it. For one the robust support for custom game modes and the inclusion of the upgraded map editing tools, the possibilities for tailoring servers to a more old school "hardcore" ruleset, and perhaps most impressive of all: FINALLY DITCHING EA'S BULLSHIT CLIENT REQUIREMENT.

So yeah by the time it releases I will probably be well on my way to rebuilding my savings and I would be lying if I didn't say the idea of playing a better version of BF4 doesn't sound VERY enticing.

Also I am a sucker for the unmatched environmental destruction. Also as someone that always loved playing a medic/support role I do really love that slick new ability to drag downed teammates to safety.

I will probably be skipping the open beta and waiting for a broader consensus when it is in the hands of the public but this will also be the first time I actually have a rig that can run a battlefield game at its full potential since Battlefield 2142 (Which if they ever give a proper sequel to I will 100% buy no matter what).

So how about the rest of you all? Anyone else kinda sold on it especially given we won't have to fuck with the stupid Origin nonsense for the first time in nearly two decades?

not played a battlefield since 2142
the series peaked with 2 tbh

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 10 points 10 months ago

Oh I am with you though I did prefer 2142 over 2. I still miss commander mode, larger squads, dedicated medic and special forces roles.

[–] LeZero@hexbear.net 6 points 10 months ago

Agreed, for me the best modern Battlefield game is actually Squad

[–] DengistDonnieDarko@hexbear.net 16 points 10 months ago

I've fallen for this trick one too many times. I'll maybe buy it in a couple years when it's a finished functioning game and on sale for $5-10, and not a moment sooner.

no server browser no purchase simple as lenin-pensive

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 4 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Looks like it is actually going to have one!

And yes that is another make or break feature for me. Like I said we still just have to wait and see.

[–] Esoteir@hexbear.net 6 points 10 months ago

it will not

notice how they made a damage control tweet asking people "what is it about a server browser that is important to you lot?" (aka: see! portal does what's most important to you anyway, you don't NEED a server browser!)

and then proceeded to use a bunch of corporate buzzwords saying "our server browser solution" instead of just saying "our server browser" which they would if they had one

there is no server browser

No Origin does sound good. but unless this becomes THE game among people I play with I see no reason to waste any more money or time on EA.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yeah hence I am sort of trying to gauge how many folks I would actually want to play shooty war sims with actually might pick it up. I have to admit it does look pretty damn good and like they are earnestly listening to fans again. Once again if they ever make a proper successor to 2142 especially if they bring back commander role and Titan mode they can just take my fuckin money.

[–] WereHacker@lemmy.ml 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I have wasted too much of my time on Planetside 2 in the hope that another 2142 showed up. One can only hope. I get my DAKKA DAKKA fix from Hell let loose, but one can only hope that BF6 will bring something new and better to the table. Once again, I'll bide my time with this one. And hope I get to throw my money and time on another 2142 before I am too old to game.

A fellow cultured comrade. BF2 was amazing as the other comrade stated but 2142 was true Peak Battlefield.

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 12 points 10 months ago

as with all battlefield games, probably

very prepared for my 'fell for it again award' but battlefield is my comfort series i guess

[–] hexthismess@hexbear.net 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'll play the beta, but unless my group all get the game and play it for longer than a week, I'm gonna give it a pass

Well I am assembling a team (of like minded folks cautiously waiting to make sure the launch goes well) can always join our discord on the sidebar. We play lots of other shit too like Foxhole, Project Zomboid, Satisfactory (mostly just me) and ARMA.

Just note if you join the discord be patient it might take us a minute to approve you I'm going to sleep right now I will check again in the morning.

[–] Breath_Of_The_Snake@hexbear.net 6 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

May I join that team? I’m also in the “wait for beta” crowd while also being a ‘battlefield with a crew is peak battlefield” crowd.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 3 points 10 months ago

Yeah of course.

[–] wideopenarms@hexbear.net 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Bf hasn't been good since bf2/2142, maybe bad company 2 if you count that (I've played almost every bf in the series after those games too), maybe I'll try it if it's free someday

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 10 months ago

BF4 was dope! But I bought it years after it came out for 20USD with all the expansions. I really loved it. I was able to fly a helicopter with my joystick and it was so fun circle-strafing buildings and laser-shooting… With KBM I would just crash immediately.

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 7 points 10 months ago

Won't work on Linux, so while it looks fun, I'll be sitting it out.

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 6 points 10 months ago

If 3 other people in my standard group get it, I'll probably get it, but that depends on moneys.

[–] bobs_guns@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 10 months ago

Don't really have the time to get good at a shooter game these days.

[–] eastbeast@hexbear.net 5 points 10 months ago

the launch is going to be a shitshow, of course, since DICE are incapable of releasing a stable game. however, me and my little squad are itching to play a good Battlefield game so I'm hoping this will be a return to form.

[–] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 5 points 10 months ago

I'll see if I can convince my friends. Since EA thinks this will sell 100m copies it will probably be the last battlefield ever. Things I've seen look good

[–] macabrett2@hexbear.net 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

My computer couldn't run BFV when it came out and I haven't upgraded so its probably a no for me. But also I kinda stopped playing online games overall and its been pretty good for my mental health ngl

I already preferred the PvE modes in online games but switching to specifically cooperative games like Vermintide and Deep Rock Galactic worked for me. Even without any direct communication they have much more of a sense of community.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 3 points 10 months ago

Ayy you should join the gaming discord on the sidebar we play lots of coop stuff.

[–] Lurkerino@hexbear.net 3 points 10 months ago

Rock and Stone!

[–] macabrett2@hexbear.net 3 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

I occasionally play cooperative games, but I am often an anchor that holds groups back, so I only ever really do it with friends. I've got several chronic illnesses that make long sessions hard and make me a frequent flake, so its easier to just mostly stick to single player.

I just happened to stop playing competitive games well before chronic illness complicated things

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Have you ever tried Warframe? The level/modding system gives a lot of room for low and high skill players to play together (it's a straight up power fantasy in the best way), and the "base" mission time is 5 minutes - either a mission takes around 5 minutes to complete or there's the option to leave or continue every 5ish minutes - so you should be able to easily leave without interrupting anything. It isn't forced co-op in the same way as Vermintide and DRG, so much of the content can be solo'd if you prefer, but it's really community minded so you're overwhelmingly more likely to get help than abuse if you're flagging for any reason.

[–] macabrett2@hexbear.net 1 points 10 months ago

I'm perfectly happy playing single player games

[–] joaomarrom@hexbear.net 4 points 10 months ago

It's looking pretty slick with the destructible environments and all that, but since I don't do multiplayer I'm def gonna pirate it to check out. The single player campaign will be jingoistic slop as always, but I'll turn off my brain and enjoy myself lol

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 4 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

No, but I don't play military shooters in general. The only BF game I've ever played was 1942 and that was pretty fun even though (or maybe because) it was extremely janky.

The game also needs an EA account to play, and if a game runs on Steam and still requires me to register another account, it can go straight in the bin.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

BF1942 was GOAT and even back then EA was shit. I don't know why anyone keeps buying new shit from them, thinking this time it will be different than the previous 487,982 times their game was shit.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 7 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

EA has been a trash company ever since people called them EOA because of their old logo, but in the early to mid 2000s they did put out some good games like BF1942, the SSX series and Burnout 3. EA these days just coasts off of microtransactions for ~~FIFA~~ EA Sports FC.

I also think they had a major role in ruining sports games forever with licensing bullshit, there's no variety or competition anymore and no arcade sports games.

[–] novibe@lemmy.ml 3 points 10 months ago

Nah… I don’t like contemporary military stuff tbh. It’s harder to create a fantasy around it, and it just feels icky to me idk.

Last battlefield I played and enjoyed was 2142. And yeah, I’d buy a sequel of it in a heartbeat as well. It’s my favorite multiplayer fps ever for sure.

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 3 points 10 months ago

Im thinking about it. Gonna check out the beta and see how it runs/ if I like it.

[–] Dimmer06@hexbear.net 2 points 10 months ago

I don't really play shooters anymore because I get too worked up playing them but it looks like it's in the same vein as BF3 and 4 which aside from tons of broken shit that took years to fix they were pretty fun.

If I still played shooters I would probably not buy at launch to see how it actually works because I wouldn't trust EA to launch a game of checkers.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I'm trying it right now and the TTK is too fast. Feels cod-like.

If they don't change that I won't play the full game. BF3 was fun, this laser beam instadeath stuff doesn't feel like it at all.

[–] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Money is so tight right now that it's going to have to wait for a while. I'm still working my way through Death Stranding 2, and then Metal Gear Solid 3: Delta is coming out later this month, then Ghost of Yotei next month, and I still need to save up for a copy of Expedition 33, so BF6 isn't even on the stove yet. It's a pot I know I'll try to get around to at some point.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yeah I am certainly in the wait and see camp and as I said before they announced it would not require Origin I wasn't even considering it but now it's a definite "eventually". Just waiting to see if they can launch it in a functional state. If they are doing away with Origin I have hopes for a proper server browser.

[–] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'd love to not have additional launchers, but now that my gaming PC is too old to do current games justice, I'd be playing on PS5, and I still hate the idea of logging on to third-party systems to play games, both for my own sake and because it sets bad precedents for everyone else.

I don't miss Call of Duty at all, but I miss the old Black Ops (1) days where there were actual dedicated servers for any online games.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 2 points 10 months ago

Looks like there actually will be a server browser again this go around too. It's maybe a nice indicator of a sea change of sorts.
