Ah yes, these "experts" who visit China only to come back and report on something obvious that's been publicly known already are just spreading CCP propaganda! clown-to-clown-communicationclown-to-clown-conversation

The US grid isn't weak, we could build a bunch of small nuclear reactors if we wanted!

Is that happening?

... You are a CCP spy

[–] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 47 points 9 months ago (5 children)

Googles Okla nuclear reactors

Jesus the company was run by Sam Altman until recently.

Also, as far as I can tell, the company hasn't sold anything.

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 32 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Ask the sales rep if it's a boondoggle or a scam

She laughs

"They're good reactors sir"

look inside the pressure vessel

It's a scam

It really is bizzare to see how detached from reality all this is. They think that simply having an "idea" means that they can practically and profitably create that idea in reality, no actual labour power or skills or industry required. The US seems so far removed from actual reality that they might start getting priests and wizards to cast spells to create things for them soon.

And we'll call them: "Economists"

Capitalism is now making 3D renders of some rejected 1950s technology, vibe with V.C. shitheads and blame the failure to materialise your unworkable ideas on environmental regulations.

bit idea: try to get VC funding for the retro-encabulator

holy shit this would get so much money

"Then I added some fins to lower wind resistance. And this racing stripe here I feel is pretty sharp." - Sam Altman, probably

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 15 points 9 months ago

As I said in my other comment, maybe they can get something going with Operation Stargate pumping a ton of money into the nuclear space, but with over a decade of VC funding and nothing to show for it I consider them vaporware.

[–] Enjoyer_of_Games@hexbear.net 45 points 9 months ago (1 children)

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 39 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (2 children)

Also, Oklo's mini reactors are fucking vaporware. Every press release about them talks about them like they really exist, but the company has been around for over ten years and has not put one real kilowatt of power onto the grid despite how "proven" the technology they are allegedly using is.

Maybe that will change with an infusion of cash from Operation Stargate or whatever, but there's a reason its stock has been tumbling and its not because its investors think the company is going places.

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 14 points 9 months ago

Even if they worked, thinking that portable nuclear reactors could be rolled out to sub for the entire US energy grid is just... Really dumb.

[–] freagle@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 9 months ago

In the interest of strengthening your rhetoric, it should be noted that the point of the comment and indeed strategies like Oklo's is to NOT put power into the grid but rather take data centers completely off the grid and power them via a disconnected localized microgrid dedicated to the building.

lathe-of-heaven time:

in 5-10 years, Disney will hold enough power to make insulting their intellectual properties no longer protected speech. saying star wars sucks will put you on a hit list.

the first person killed by the Mickey Mouse Death Squads, Brought To You By Disney Plus and Hulu (MMDSBTYBDPH) will be a redditor who thought they epically owned Mr JingPing online

Reddit will blame China

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 31 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Imagine calling yourself a conspiracy theorist, and then believing you got banned on an American platform, who's Director of Policy literally worked at the Atlantic Council (a CIA front), because of their adversary. 🤡

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 15 points 9 months ago

I imagine that 100% of the conspiracy subreddit mods are CIA though, not even as a joke, like, they full on would be making sure that the first result that comes up on google when people search about conspiracies and conspiracy theories is totally under their control.

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 8 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Everybody mogged conspiracy theorists so hard that anyone who calls themselves that anymore is either mindbogglingly stupid, andor a contrarian.

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 37 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I love how r/conspiracy is extremely distrustful of the US government… while also automatically believing everything the US government says about China and North Korea

[–] AmarkuntheGatherer@lemmygrad.ml 22 points 9 months ago

I doubt there's a single post there with 10+ upvotes that wouldn't be endorsed by some part of the Usian intelligence services.

[–] freagle@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 9 months ago

That's in no small part because of the CIA's involvement in the conspiracy theorist scene

[–] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 34 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I try to remind myself that there’s a good chance people like this are teenagers.

[–] EatPotatoes@hexbear.net 15 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Only teenagers can believe thousands of FBRs can be safely built because the website said so. The kind of reactors whose coolant explodes on contact with air. American data centers are just going through to burn gas with their own apocalyptic gensets.

[–] lil_tank@hexbear.net 20 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (2 children)

Only teenagers

The intellect and maturity of the average teenage white USian isn't very far below the ones of the average white USian dad

[–] EatPotatoes@hexbear.net 11 points 9 months ago

You see them on youtube comment sections of pro-nuclear podcasts trying to talk like intellectual gents from the 1800s. I have been shitty about nuclear here but it's more of a gag reflex to them and redditors who treat it all like magic.

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 9 points 9 months ago

The bit in the Simpsons where Bart and Hoemr were just about equal is actually true.

[–] penitentkulak@hexbear.net 29 points 9 months ago

The U.S. is embracing solar+storage, but both sides are fucking it up by making it political instead of actually being productive.

So, they're not embracing it then?

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 29 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Winnie the Pooh is a wholesome adorable character and the next person to slander the good name of Pooh gets a fucking knife in them

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 21 points 9 months ago

Not to mention they'll complain that you can't use adult terminology on TikTok and then turn right around and pretend like it's a grave insult to refer to Xi as Winnie the Pooh

Have some fucking balls if you're such a brave martyr then

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 13 points 9 months ago

It should be a crime punishable by a thousand honey jars to the head leading to a painful death.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

This. The next person to imply Pooh is a communist and mean that negatively, or use him to insult China, gets the fucking wall. After, of course, they are made to climb a bee tree and fill a hunny pot or two for him while dodging the disturbed bees. That nice bear needs a hug, not to be used as an insult.

(I don't imagine he'd be particularly willing to read theory, or fight in a revolution, but once you explained to him that communists really just want society to progress to its next stage of being and for people to have greater equality and more collective decision making, I do think he'd be supportive of the cause and happy to provide hugs, manage the honey supply, and generally raise morale. But calling him a communist as an insult isn't cool, even if I do think he'd side with whoever promises him enough hunny for everyone and equality for society as a whole, and communists are more likely than any other ideological alignment to promise that and achieve it.)

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 3 points 9 months ago (7 children)

Its always nice to find someone as passionate about pooh bear as I am. Love that little rascal.

Every conspiracy thread ever:

“Third grade and Fox News was right! ‘Murica good and the corporate elite is your friend! Because I said so!”

[–] Thordros@hexbear.net 24 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Fun fact about the Winnie the Pooh meme! And it's racist origins! This is the progenitor of the entire meme:

Some very cool people captioned it: Xinnie the Pooh, and (GUESS WHICH LETTER THIS IS)igger, Too!

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 4 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Insulting Pooh is bad enough on its own. But insulting Tigger... ugh. Maybe I'm biased because he's my favourite Winnie the Pooh supporting character, but... yeah, screw you if you take such a cheap shot at such a cute kitty. Tigger is a nice guy and just as sweet and hug shaped as Pooh, this isn't cool.

(Even if those pictures do look very similar, there was definitely a way to joke about that without being racist towards either of those public officials, or rude to Pooh and Tigger. Although, as someone who does not respect the United States as a nation, I do consider comparing Tigger to a US politician to be an insult in itself.)

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 17 points 9 months ago

The next person to slander Winnie the Pooh gets a broken hunny pot to the head.

That bear is a wholesome pile of hugs that does not deserve to have his good name ruined by racist nonsense left over from the bloody Cold War.

I may not want to hug any modern socialist leaders as much as I want to hug Stalin, but I'll take a Pooh hug from the actual bear, he definitely needs a good snuggle for putting up with all this nonsense.

(And, y'know, our site mascot here is a bear, so we gotta stand up for our fellow bears, right?)

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 16 points 9 months ago

One day Trump is going to get bored and say that you can't call him orange man. It's not going to feel as good as you think, unfortunately. It's going to be "what are we? A bunch of Asians?" But interspersed will be some people who will do a heel turn and say it's different when it's America doing it. Criticisms of those people are what keep me going.

[–] Lavender@hexbear.net 10 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Guess we'll just have to pour more money into the military, AI, and the militarization of AI.

[–] Samsuma@lemmy.ml 8 points 9 months ago

Can the West's deindustrialization just accelerate even faster ffs..
