Sounds great, but this "New lifestyle philosophy" also sounds a lot like hedonism

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 16 points 4 months ago (2 children)

We've got wine and women and wonderful vices. Come and join the cult of Dionysus.

Let's get mischievous.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 months ago

trancy acoustic bridge

[–] astropenguin5@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Is hedonism just getting dopamine?

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Why don't they just sell dopamine pills?

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 months ago

From my understanding that basically heroin

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Afaik, hedonism is about seeking pleasure. Dunno if that's a yes or a no, really.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 months ago

Probably not just dopamine specifically, but general vibes yeah probably.

[–] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Neurotransmitters aren't as simple as that really. Dopamine is more associated with engagement, which can be distressful (hyperfocusing) (and neurotransmitters also have a bunch of different uses in the body and brain etc)

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I love when I'm hyper-focused. It's the distracted and non-starting I can't abide.

[–] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I mean, I get you, and I agree, but being hyperfocused can definitely sometimes be distressing to me. Especially when I'm hyperfocusing on something that I don't really "want" to hyperfocus on, if that makes sense. Obviously I want to hyperfocus on the thing as that's what engaging me in the moment, but it's the forefront of my mind, the conscious part, that might disagree. Especially if there's other stuff that needs to get done, such as work

..I get if this is a bit abstract, but it's how it makes sense to me

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Ah actually that makes a lot of sense. Up until what you said, I never used the term for intense non-productive activity, so it always had positive connotations for me. Huh. Reevaluating some things.

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

You might look into adderall. As someone with adhd, its the only medicine ive ever found that didnt have any major drawbacks and changed my entire world view. Its astounding what you can do when your body and mind arent fighting you.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

I don't have a diagnosis, just patterns and suspicions. Something to think about.

[–] moopet@sh.itjust.works 16 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

I find delight in getting angry that someone who is happy to use words like "amelioration", "betterment", etc., still has to shorten "something" to "smth" right in the middle.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

I think it was "having a good laugh at Samantha "

[–] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 16 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Looks more like The Eight Delights plus "none of the above".

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 15 points 4 months ago

Dude said "I've never been pleasantly surprised" holy shit

[–] Klear@quokk.au 13 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 9 points 4 months ago

That's what I understood. If you can't do anything else be the wildcard.

Or eat an egg.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago (1 children)

One of those delights isn’t for me. The other eight look good.

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 15 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Is it goofing? Are you a serious person?

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 15 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Nah, I’m just asexual and very sex-repulsed. I would hope that I’m a goof; I’m paid money to be a goof into a microphone fairly often!

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

To be fair I was trying to get my daily goof in with my previous comment 😉

[–] Nindelofocho@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

Thy cup runneth over

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 10 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Never heard that definition of ameliorate

[–] stevedice@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

What definition have you heard?

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

To make something less bad

"I wonder how many people will reply only to say they can't/don't want to experience one or more of the nine delights."

-- several minutes later --

"About as many as I expected."

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I only care for 3 of these.

Deliciousness, Goofing, and Coitus.

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 10 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Do not try to mix them. It is forbidden for mortals.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 13 points 4 months ago (1 children)

laugbing at the delicious food I am fucking

[–] Klear@quokk.au 5 points 4 months ago

I'm currently listening to the new album by young scrolls and I read your comment just as Nazir said "Some seriously fucked up shit". Fit perfectly.

[–] zout@fedia.io 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Maybe I'm not a mere mortal, but how do you not mix these?

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] zout@fedia.io 5 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I don't know, my wife occasionally screams oh god during the mixing event?

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 4 points 4 months ago

Fair enough, proceed.

[–] Rose_Thorne@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 months ago

You broke the rule.

If somebody asks if you're a god, YOU SAY YES!

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 4 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I guess enthralment does not apply for most neurodivergents.

[–] Eq0@literature.cafe 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Really? I thought both autism and ADHD had enthrallment basically as a symptom. I admit I am not familiar with any other neurodivergency, so my knowledge is definitely limited

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 5 points 4 months ago

Yep, my point is that hyperfixation comes out of the box, and often it comes with a cost of everything else.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I'm (most likely) autistic, I usually have a good time when I'm "enthralled".

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, but I forget food, water, sleep, everything. It comes at a cost..

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

That sounds pretty extreme even by autism standards ...

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 1 points 4 months ago

Have you done that test where they give you a kind of "rpg character sheet", where there are ND and NT traits and they put scores on each trait?

Well it seems I minmaxed for a very specific character build.
