The Occupation of Alcatraz was a 19-month long protest which began on this day in 1969, when 89 Native Americans and their supporters occupied and reclaimed Alcatraz Island as indigenous land.

The protest was led by Richard Oakes and Grace Thorpe. The group chose the name Indians of All Tribes (IOAT) for themselves and lived on the island together until the protest was forcibly ended by the U.S. government.

IOAT claimed that, under the Treaty of Fort Laramie between the U.S. and the Lakota tribe, all retired, abandoned, or out-of-use federal land was returned to the Indians who once occupied it.

By late May of 1971, the government had cut off all electrical power and all telephone service to the island. Left without power, fresh water, and in the face of diminishing public support and sympathy, the number of occupiers began to dwindle. On June 11th, 1971, a large force of federal officers removed the remaining 15 people from the island.

Small time science/tech youtubers: Sorry I'm just doing a low effort one today guys, we're just going to be dismantling this piece of machinery, explaining every single part in it, why these parts were chosen and the historical context in which this machine was built. I'm only doing two weeks this month sorry.

Big time science/tech youtubers: I had my intern write why I like the new iphone

Small AND big time media youtubers: Wow my job is so fucking hard, it took 7 months of hard work to review the fifth episode of a TV show that only ran in Canada in the 80s.

Kind of amusing that Biden could've released the epstein files during the election and completely ruined Trumps campaign.

[โ€“] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago

Heโ€™s a whole different kind of corrupt and pervy than the rest of DC too. He couldโ€™ve ruined everyoneโ€™s careers and probably walked away unscathed.

[โ€“] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

Idk he probably could have ruined a lot more than just Trump's campaign, using Patriot Act executive powers that Trump was indicating the intention to expand.

Real dream I had last night: I was a wizard. I had a wizard's staff that was a symbol of my office and status, and when I held it, the wind blew in front of me. My wizard job was pumping gas at a gas station.

She also tried, unsuccessfully, to use the Nazi's Aryan laws preventing Jews from owning businesses to try to take control of her perfume company from her Jewish partners.

very convenient that her ideology lined up with her material benefit I wonder how that happens

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจim-vegan ALERT!!! ๐Ÿšจ ๐Ÿšจ

They have finally cracked yogurt. There is some new yogurt brands (pretty expensive so far where I live) that have started making thick creamy yogurt that is about as good an approximation of fancy yogurt as the new pea protein ice creams that came out give years ago.

Every time I show up to work I think "what am I doing with my life. Why the fuck am I a bartender. This is the last thing I want to be doing." Then I just keep showing up.

Recently broke up with someone and this weekend sheโ€™s been sending me abusive texts and crashing out for like 48 hours. It doesnโ€™t stop much except when sheโ€™s sleeping. Iโ€™ve messaged a couple of times to say Iโ€™m not engaging while sheโ€™s berating me and clearly not doing well, since Friday Iโ€™ve only responded twice, both times I asked her to speak to a friend instead of sitting at home hitting nitrous oxide and crashing out. She just slings more insults in response. Like from the highest level of attacking me as a person to the core, to the pettiest - for example sending me a photo of her eating chicken that she was โ€œeating in my honourโ€, to piss me off because Iโ€™m vegan I guess?

I really donโ€™t know what to do except stick to what I said and not engage. It sucks because obviously we cared for each other during our relationship, and I still donโ€™t want her to suffer. Iโ€™d like to help but feeding this feels completely wrong. We havenโ€™t actually been together for a few months, this is because she wanted to get back together and I was hesitant and thinking we probably shouldnโ€™t. Because stuff like this happened when we were together too (to a lesser degree). I guess I feel validated in that hesitancy now, god damn.

Honestly I was half expecting to arrive home yesterday to some property damage at my place, she lives close by and she is completely off the rails. I donโ€™t know what to do except hope she calms down.

I just saw a YouTube reel of a guy who made a 3000Ib concrete sarcophagus with a resin cast block protecting a bag of flaming hot cheetos, suspended inside via wires so it's floating, before hermetically sealing it and burying it for future civilizations to find, with a memorial plaque indicating "a buried artifact, not to be opened for 10,000 years"

Kind of amazing that 9 weeks ago the chuds thought Charlie Kirk would be a historic martyr and Trump would use his death as the excuse to end elections. Now literally no one remembers him, and Trump just had a long meeting with the socialist mayor of New York where he basically fell in love.

reusable ammo boxes in HL2. You normally press E on them to get more ammo, but they also put in code so you can just hit it with a crowbar instead. Except, what the code actually does is check that you are merely holding a crowbar when the crate takes damage. This means you can do stuff like throw a grenade at one then switch to your crowbar; when the grenade explodes you magically get resupplied, despite being nowhere near the crate.

Well, I guess I'm stating a political hardcore punk band.

I'm still healing from this divorce shit and something kind of amazing came out of it. I haven't been in the scene for damn near 20 years and only was able to go to a few shows when I was married. Well, we are apparently developing a scene in my city again, so I've been trying to make it out to shows as much as I can. A few months ago I was talking to some friends about how I wish we had a proper punk scene here. Discovered a local band named Social Anxiety and was hanging out with them last night at this sort of multi-genre show that they were playing at. I've also been talking to a few friends about possibly starting a band.

I bought a bass guitar this last week after not playing for 20 years, I am friends with 2 guitarists, and I might have possibly also found a drummer. Gonna see where this goes but if this project does take off I'll be stepping down from PSL and probably putting the web dev stuff on hold to pour all my time into relearning bass and getting this thing off the ground. I'm hoping to toe that line where hardcore came out of punk in the 90's with a lot of heavy political themes. I'm hoping to stick to backing vocals but if we can't find someone I might try to do main vocals again. I'd like to take inspo from Anti-flag, Dystopia and a few other more crustier sounding bands, but I'm also curious about tossing in a bit of post-hardcore in there.

It is kinda of a shame that there aren't games that have a vast and deep story and world where you have to interact with it through a ddr dance pad/motion controls/music instrumental controller. I want some vast rpg where people struggle with an existential crisis and then you have to dance battle god at the end.

I'm in the news! For doing cool stuff!

They don't mention me by name anywhere (which is good, tbh), but I'm in the main article picture (basically all of my body is visible, except my face). They also mention things I said in the body of the article, and I know for sure I was the only person there who said them.

[โ€“] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I've been in quite a number of news articles for cool stuff I've done, basically never including my name though, across quite a few publications, some left-wing and some mainstream. I've technically appeared many times on It's Going Down.

I think I was just harassed by a cop in a really weird way??

I was driving home and this black charger was tail gating me really hard, I thought he wanted to pass me but I got over in the right lane and he never did, then when we hit a part of the highway where the speed drops he was still matching speeds with me in the left lane despite me trying to let him pass

At one point i thought I heard a siren but there were no lights and I turned off my music and listened and didn't hear anything. Then the guy was like matching speeds directly in my blind spot on the left side

I saw a car turning out into the right lane in front of me, so I sped up to get clearly in front of him so I could pass it, and after I do I hear sirens again, for longer this time, but no lights and no indication i'm being pulled over

I slow down and he drives up beside me and I glance over and he HOLDS UP HIS COP BADGE AT ME and I'm just like ??? Am i being pulled over??? what is this. And he just keeps driving and then soon after takes a left turn to make a U Turn

Like what the fuck was that, did he not like how fast I was driving but not enough to ticket me over it?? I don't think I got out of it for us-foreign-policy reasons since I think he was black but idk

I guess I'm glad he didn't ticket me but it still comes off as weird power trippy shit.

I guess it's time to finally swap to Linux. I really haven't wanted to have to spend the energy to learn a new os and find new programs to do different things and everything; I have so little energy and there's so much to do. But microsoft have really decided to make it necessary.

I don't think Ableton works on Linux. Anyone have any DAW recommendations for Linux?

I really hate how many normal people just dismiss all of the really terrible problems nowadays with "oh yeah, I saw a news article about that a few years ago". People just really don't appreciate how much worse everything has gotten.

It's the same way with listening to the socialist perspective on all these common well known problems, they'll say because they heard about these problems on Fox News or CNN or NYT they don't need to hear about it anymore
