Mildly Interesting

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

The headline makes it sound like the "in favour" votes were for death penalty, which is not correct. This was a vote for a moratorium - a temporary suspension - of death penalty.

[–] Saltycracker@lemmy.world 34 points 1 month ago

This now makes more sense. The headline did a shitty job

[–] trashcroissant@lemmy.blahaj.zone 24 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Omg thank you for the explanation I was real worried there for a second

[–] INHALE_VEGETABLES@aussie.zone 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I was wondering how we are somehow in favour when we don't even have it.

(op is a cunt Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi)

If it makes the United States look good it has to be wrong

[–] y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 month ago

Thank you I was very confused seeing many of these countries "against"

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Yes I checked my own country (Denmark) and that is green, and for Denmark it is decidedly illegal to vote for death penalty.
So the vote was probably about making death penalty illegal.

PS:
AFAIK it would be against the Eu treaty to vote for death penalty for ALL EU countries.

The headline in the image clears up the confusion

[–] Ghoelian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 month ago

Not if you don't know what moratorium means (which I didn't before reading the comments)

[–] argarath@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah I came here to ask about this, because Brazil voting in favor of the death penalty when it doesn't have it did set off some alarms for me

[–] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Thought the same looking up Canada.

[–] aim_at_me@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 month ago

New Zealand and Iceland lol

The only people who were confused are the ones who didn't actually read the diagram.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

yeah you could delete the labels altogether and I'd still tell you which color is which vote based on who voted.

for future reference, if you see the US voting with the wartorn, economically devastated, despot-ruled or otherwise suffering nations, or if you see the US voting alone or with Israel, then you can bet that they voted for the worst option.

[–] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's no excuse for a misleading headline.

[–] crypt0cler1c@infosec.pub 0 points 1 month ago

It's not misleading at all...

Seems like the dudes in favor of the death penalty seem to be the usual suspects... And then there's Japan, who straight up went

for no discernible fuckin reason LOL

[–] zloubida@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Japan is a country that frequently practices the death penalty.

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Really? I did not know that. Gotta look into that

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You'd think it would involve katanas and beheading or something like you'd see in the movies. Nope, hanging. The Japanese death penalty is typically hanging. Wild, I know. No swords involved. Sorry if this ruins your Monday. I know I was disappointed. Sometimes movies lie, though.

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago

I didnt know japan still had the death penalty in the first place

[–] PhobosAnomaly@feddit.uk 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Death Note would have a gash plot if Japan didn't like a bit of punishment that wasn't compatible with life.

Admittedly, I'd be much more likely to write in the Inconvenient Note so arseholes would find themselves wearing wet socks every day; encounter people who never finish their sentences; have to find a towel lying about the house before showering; or have every underfoot surface feel like a box of Lego.

[–] amino@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

the Japanese state doesn't want to ban the death penalty for the same reason why it celebrates the genocides it committed against its neighbors. it's a very useful tool to keep people passive against its abuses

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Where does japan celebrate it?

[–] amino@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

That is a few people not the entire nation. There are also 25% supporting fashists and nazis in germany, brits that support their empire, russians that also want stalin back, that is different than state supported things like that like in all of china enjoying propaganda against japan, america and south korea from childhood, or in USA where they teach slavery being a good thing and not killing the natives

[–] amino@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago

ask the average Japanese what they think should be done about the Korean minority of Japan and there you have your answer. xenophobia and chauvinism is commonplace, the fascist PM wouldn't have won the election otherwise

[–] Objection@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

the Japanese state doesn’t want to ban the death penalty for the same reason why it celebrates the genocides

That is a few people not the entire nation.

That's the prime minister, the head of government.

[–] gigachad@sh.itjust.works 37 points 1 month ago

The title is highly misleading OP, please correct.

[–] msage@programming.dev 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Belize? Maledives? Trinidad? Wtf?

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 24 points 1 month ago

Tiny states use pointless votes like this as a chance to curry favour. Sure, china or the us, we'll vote however you want on this purely symbolic question that will have zero real world impact. Now about that loan...

[–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 month ago

What would be interesting is whether there are any countries that voted differently from what they currently do (ie countries that have the death penalty but voted for a moratorium, or the other way round).
