Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Very true, but expecting that an artificial neural net of sufficient complexity is going to be something the layperson can distinguish from actual consciousnesses, is also I think unrealistic. Since there is no objective test for consciousness, the line between you feeling convinced that you are talking to a separate consciousness, and you actually talking to a separate consciousness, may in fact be an entirely artificial distinction on some very fundamental levels.

People were also (allegedly) terrified of The Arrival of a Train, but soon realized it is all just pictures and there is no train.

They could mimick it very well I guess though. Like a P-Zombie.

P-Zombie sounds like a sleepwalking syndrome

Incidentally, generative AI also makes paintings "become alive" these days. Of course it's dreamt up. Exactly like the generated text... But these those two things usually go hand in hand with the people.

My Creationist cousin said much the same to me about life generally.

LLMs are based in computing hardware that does not engage in sexual reproduction and is thus not subject to evolution by natural selection.

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 months ago

Sexual reproduction isn't necessary. Just a replicator and errors in replication.

I thought old Elen Musty added that function for the horny anime fans?
