Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Vitamin B12 and water, everyone.

taking a b vitamin (all b vitamins) whenever i realize ive had too much = usually no hangover

my head canon is all them water soluble b vitamins just get pissed out while the diuretic alcohol and also water in the drink be makin you piss like crazy, so a big part of hangovers is b vitamin deficiency (which funny enough alcoholism causes)

Huh, I recently heard someone say that certain people might like the taste of alcohol because it could correlate with higher calorie content and therefore be evolutionarily advantageous to desire fruit with alcohol in it

I do not have that gene or whatever because any amount of ethanol tastes vile to me, but a raccoon is a scavenger animal. It would make sense if animals who are more likely to eat overripe, rotting, or fermented food like omnivorous scavengers would be more likely to enjoy the taste of alcohol.

I wonder if any science has been done that affirms this hypothesis

I suspect a more simple explanation might be that social animals fuck more when drunk because it lubricates social inhibitions. It's possible that gets into evolution if liking the alcohol means more reproduction.

[–] AnarchoEngineer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

But being drunk also decreases situational awareness which would not be evolutionarily advantageous… well I guess social animals might not need to be as situationally aware as solitary species, so maybe inebriation is a more likely explanation

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

You can sorta see it when you think about it. Dogs, rabbit, meerkats etc are all social but they'd be pretty harmed by the situational awareness issue so you don't see those social animals having attachments to alcohol. Monkeys though? You definitely do.

I think your guess is right, the social animals that aren't harmed by the situational awareness downside gain benefits from it and it found its way into genetics in places, while the other social animals don't gain benefits. There's even some bird species that actively avoid fermented fruits, probably because it's a death sentence to be a drunk bird so that found its way into their genetics.

any amount of ethanol tastes vile to me

That changes when you drink it frequently, unless you drink too much and get really hungover in which case it'll be the opposite

[–] AnarchoEngineer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 months ago

I’ve written about this before, but it’s a long story of experimentation so short story: I don’t really get drunk or hungover. So there’s no real source for me to form positive associations with the taste of alcohol.

The first time I drank I basically went on a bender with my cousin trying all the different kinds of hard liquor we could find. Gin is probably my favorite (the only ones whose flavor notes seem to actually go with the taste of alcohol), but I’d prefer water or juice over all of them. Anyway in the morning my cousin threw up, I didn’t.

I’ve been out to drink a few times since, and while the CNS depressant effects like breathing and heart rate show up. I don’t feel more relaxed or happy or buzzed or more social or brave/foolhhardy. I mostly just feel a headache, maybe dizziness if I drink a lot, and the thought of “why did I pay for a drink that tastes bad when I could’ve bought a cheaper one that actually tastes good?”

This was 100% a shapeshifter that broke into a liquor store, got drunk, and then they found a passed out raccoon.

No seriously I haven’t seen surveillance footage of him/her actually pulling the bottles out and getting fucked up.
