I get the feeling that the whole redditor "Who hurt you?" thing is a consequence of media trying to make sympathetic villains by giving them a back story like "They're evil because they were hurt in their tragic backstory."
All it did was teach people that "traumatized = bad/wrong person."
Yep, and it provides an easy out for people to pretend to be sympathetic while actually being dismissive, which is why redditors love it so much.
