I was half expecting this to be a PugJesus post with a historical context comment lmao

[–] notabot@piefed.social 33 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Well, I'm no PugJesus, but I believe this is a reference to the ill fated Donner Party expedition of pioneers attempting to make the east to west journey to California. They became stranded in the Sierra Nevada region during the winter of 1846-47, and ended up resorting to eatting the bodies of the party members who'd perished in order to survive.

Is that why the kebap got it's name

I'm just happy to be a little useful to the Fediverse! 🙏

"Well, Donner replaced the previous reindeer, Kebab. Sometimes when a reindeer breaks a leg on a janky rooftop, we have to put them down. It's sad, but, you know, Donner is a reminder that we try not to waste anything here at the North Pole. Say....you hungry? Suddenly I'm kind of hungry..."

Y'all know St. Nicholas of Myra lived in Anatolya, right?

Yo venison kebab would actually slap I couldn't even be mad

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Had a reindeer stew once, and it was pretty solid relative to other venison. Venison kebab would need some added fat, but I would 100% get down on some.

In case of muscular animals, liver kebab may also taste good.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 2 points 6 days ago

Can confirm. Love a goat liver kebab.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

You really don't want to know.

"One is named after Mrs. Clause, she was quite a looker back in our day! The other is named after a dear friend of Santa's, we play D&D with the Easter Bunny, St. Patrick, and The Great Pumpkin once a month, you probably know his holiday, 'Valentines Day.'"

This is why we need to spell Donder's name correctly! Donder und Blitzen 🌧️⚡

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 9 points 6 days ago (2 children)

There’s nothing incorrect about donner. You have it in Donnerstag as well.

[–] Seleni@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Except it is? In the original poem it was ‘Donder’.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 5 points 6 days ago

Well in German it's Donner and Blitz not donder and blitzen

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Good point, Thor's Day, god of thunder and lightning. But I noticed if I set Translate to Detect Language and type in donder, it translates from Dutch becoming thunder, but if I type in donner it says it's English and doesn't translate it.

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 2 points 5 days ago

I can see that. The Swedish equivalent to Thunder/Donder is "dunder." The German word is "Donner."

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Donner is German for "thunder"...

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

Donner is also French for "to give"

I'm sitting corrected, thanks. And I'm also more aware of the limits of "detect language," since it defaulted to English: donner = donner

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I thought it was Donner kebab

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

That adds an interesting element to the Dinner Party story... Edit: Shit! DONNER PARTY, you stupid autocorrect! Although you're not entirely wrong....

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

And then the reindeer thundered??

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 3 points 6 days ago

They're outnumbered 15 to one

And the battle's begun

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

What about Vixen, Santa?

...I said, WHAT ABOUT VIXEN, SANTA?! 🗣

[–] logicbomb@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago

He obviously chose names so that they would work in that song. A name like Slartibartfast is immediately ruled out.

also anyone got any moose suggestions?
