No I wouldn't consider these as viable everyday wear, but given how badly nearsighted I am, they still give me much better focus than my natural vision.

I got 2 pairs of these delivered today for only $7.16 total ๐Ÿ‘

Anti surveillance mode:

The pictures will come out blurry

OOTL: How does this help prevent or fight against AI?

You're not out of the loop, there's nothing that suggests these do anything.

My best guess is because they are opaque lenses with tiny holes, so no photo filter or IR light will be able to "map" your eye region or anything behind the glasses. If that is indeed the answer, then these are not sufficient enough to actually do anything of value if not coupled with other face coverings. They will only serve to fuck up your vision and depth-perception (unless you have myopia, apparently)

You wanna poke any guesses at exactly how I learned my natural vision is about 20/500 stupid nearsighted? Eye doctors use these as a basic test for children, to quickly gauge whether further testing needs to be done and a prescription issued.

I was 7 when I first got to see anything even close to clearly, through pinhole glasses not much different than these. And they were cheap, so why not get a couple pairs right?

[โ€“] phaedrus@piefed.world 11 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not questioning the use of them medically, I'm questioning the idea that these do anything for AI.

They still cause depth-perception problems, regardless. Even you commented yourself you wouldn't wear them while driving.

I am assuming this idea probably has something to do with the Flock camera AI surveillance police state situation, but I don't know.

[โ€“] artyom@piefed.social 3 points 10 hours ago

Flock is far from the only widespread surveillance system. Just the biggest.

[โ€“] over_clox@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

More or less yeah.

Honestly I basically bought them just because they're stupid cheap and as an absolute last ditch backup they do improve my vision to an extent, should I lose or break my main prescription glasses.

They fairly effectively defeat facial recognition.

[โ€“] phaedrus@piefed.world 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

That doesn't answer the question though. Where are the details and how does it do it "fairly effectively?"

All I can find about them is info on myopia, and even for that they don't fully work.

[โ€“] over_clox@lemmy.world -2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Of course they're not perfect, but when you compare 2 pairs of these for $7.16 to my actual prescription which last cost me $217, well why the hell wouldn't I buy a couple pairs of these as cheap backups. I'm probably gonna give my mom the other pair for Christmas.

As far as AI face recognition, a large part of that is tracking the exact dimensions and ratios of your eyes, eyebrows, nose bridge area, etc. If cameras can't see those features, they're hard pressed to even register the image as a face, let alone try to identify the person.

  1. If you're in the USA, maybe look into something like GlassesUSA or ZenniOptical. You can save a shit ton on prescriptions and get multiple pairs for that amount, even with a crazy prescription. There might be other sites outside the USA, but I don't know what they are off-hand.
  2. AI facial recognition doesn't need to do anything special to get around people wearing dark sunglasses now, especially when the cameras are situated at a higher angle than your face and can see around the lenses. The glasses alone will not stop facial recognition.

Regarding your points...

  1. I actually have 3 pairs of glasses, one prescription and 2 others that happen to work perfectly for me that were thankfully donated to me, one of those pairs is even better than any prescription I've ever had, so I think I'm good on prescription glasses for a while thankfully.

  2. Hence the hat, and guess what, I'm not even wearing the same hat that I wore for the photo...

How would you describe the view?

Fuck you, take my upvote and have a Merry Christmas! ๐ŸŽ„โ˜ƒ๏ธ

A little unusual, put it that way. Trying to look at and type on my tablet screen shows that I sorta see 2 of everything, and not in the drunken eyes can't converge way.

But for what it is and what they're worth, they're a damn fine backup emergency option, they definitely improve my natural bad nearsighted focus ๐Ÿ‘

I can already confidently say that whatever you do, do not drive with them.

[โ€“] rubdos@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (2 children)

I suppose outside works best? Mind sharing which ones you got? Thanks for sharing!!

[โ€“] over_clox@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

And yeah I'd say outside in the day is best, but do not drive while wearing them, it is a little brainfuckery weird to look through, but as an emergency backup for nearsightedness they definitely help.

[โ€“] over_clox@lemmy.world 0 points 12 hours ago

I just looked up pinhole glasses on eBay, they're almost all basically the same and rather cheap, the only differences I spotted were in the frame shape/style, so I got the sleeker slimmer looking ones.
